EitB PBEM XXXIX Setup and Tech Thread

I don't have a flying clue what is going on. This is the official modder talking:

YOU NEED TWO COPIES (ONE LABELLED "v11.1", ONE WITHOUT A SUFFIX) TO PLAY IN THIS GAME. WHAT IS INSTALLED IN THE SECOND ONE DOESN'T MATTER, SAVE ITS ART FILE (WHICH HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED IN ANY VERSION OF EITB).

All of your assumptions about the effects this will have are wrong. To be explicit, it can run fine if you play solely in a relabeled EitB directory - this screws things up, however, for other games people are involved in (and prevents me from doing any modding work).

Based solely on your last post, none of those issues will come up. What DaveV did, is to open the WB save he had of this map with his own v11.1 version, and launch the game off that. As virtually nothing is saved in WBfiles, and no version of EitB has altered it suffeciently to break games, this means all settings are launched in there, and not predetermined earlier (apart from obvious ones like Raging/No Barbs and etc.). Once this is setup, none of the individual players xml/python files in the mod matter - as in, if you change the beaker value of Calender to 500b, the value will remain unchanged (even if all players did this). The only thing that could happen is it could fail to open the game, but you can't cheat by altering your own files.

Edit: Also, please could you not ever try to open the PBEM save to edit it?

Leaving aside the v11/v11.1 side-by-side - I'm currently playing with a buggy version of v12 alongside my one, but it won't change anything. Only the art assets are referred to in the EitB file, and that hasn't changed since at least v9.

And yes, it's an inelegant solution - but I'm currently playing in 3 different version games, whilst developing another. I have 5 copies of EitB in the raw folder (not to mention 4-5 sitting around at various places as backups - and remember these files aren't removed from your downloads automatically), another 4 of "FFH" (thank the Lord that EitB is run standalone rather than overriding a FFH file, like almost every other mod), and a couple of RBMod. At the end of the day, it's a mighty impressive setup for a game released nearly 10 years ago that it still runs as it should.

I don't think you understand.

DaveV did something to the file that changed the directory extension from "/Erebus in the Balance v11/" to "/Erebus in the Balance v11.1/"

Most likely, he just used the old WB/Notepad trick I described before (possibly in combination with WBCleaner, as he started the map up with random players first). But he never actually states what he did to fix it- only that he fixed it:

Don't forget to delete your old save files!

If DaveV hadn't did whatever he did, we wouldn't be having this conversation- as the save would still be refusing to run in version 11.1 rather than 11.0

To be clear: The instructions in the mod thread are correct, for normal testing purposes/SP games. In a PBEM game, however, we have to make sure everyone has the same file, which is why at least two files are needed.

Look out for any potential issues as they come along. Dreylin, I want you in particular to check your tech tree has Overcouncil/Undercouncil at the new nodes (Poisons/Medicine) when you load up the save (since you're running a v11 and v11.1 folder side-by-side, and the save was originally genned in v11: though hopefully only the art assets are being drawn from the v11 file...)

Thanks to all of you guys for talking me through my concerns. It's never fun to be the new guy, but you guys have (mostly) managed a lot of patience so far. goodjob

Great to hear you're happy that things are OK to move forward. I'll look for the save later (DreylinWillowbark at blah blah blah)

Could we PLEASE get all the e-mails into the first post? It will be a hassle trying to hunt your e-mail down in the future, otherwise.

By the way, I finished my turn just a sec ago. I'll be sending you the file as soon as I can find the correct extension to your e-mail (since you didn't list it here).

EDIT: Apparently you didn't list the extension earlier in this thread either. I went ahead and sent it assuming the "usual" meant @gmail.com - I hope that's correct. Also, people commented on my using a school e-mail address before (bfw28 at cornell.edu). It's actually an alumni e-mail address that I get to keep for life. So it getting deleted someday is a non-issue.

Yes, around here "the usual" is used to refer to gmail.

I confirm the save in my inbox; I'll likely play late tonight as I'm going to the movies with my wife tonight.

Yes @gmail.com is correct. We should have a consolidated email list yes.

Hey guys, really sorry but I've found another problem (2 possibly).

Definite problem: Khazad should start with 50g and I don't have any = very sad Vaults. Sorry, we're going to need another restart. frown

Possible problem: Save came round as 1AD again and wanted to overwrite the 1AD to Jonas save that was created last turn; is that supposed to happen? I can delete last turn's save and let it write a new one, but is that going to necessary every turn?

This is a known issue. It's why Dave and I have both been saying to delete your first turn saves - it only applies to the first save, but that one needs to be deleted before getting to the next turn.

Ah, OK. I'd figured that was just related to the reload(s) and didn't realise there was another reason behind it.

I have the new save from DaveV, but won't be able to play it until this evening.

That was quick. Thanks Dave. Hopefully 4th time is the charm!
