Played turn. I'll put screenshots up tomorrow (for what that's worth) but it looks like this is a hot war between the Zulu and CH! Unfortunately, according to civ stats, the Zulu aren't winning. CH razed what looks like a 2-pop Zulu city. I've also lost my trade connection with the Zulu. On the power charts, both sides have huge power jumps and were about tied last turn. I'd really love to jump in and try to do some damage to CH, but I just don't have the units to spare, and I'd have to hurt my growth a lot to shift gears.
For now, I'm going to stay on course, but I'm going to keep an eye on foreign events. If CH continues to make gains... I might just try to whip out a small force to see if I can burn any of his border towns. I don't want to hurt my own growth curve, but I don't want to see a neighboring HRE grow or see my Zulu allies get too weakened. I wonder what caused this war, though. According to the events, it was the ZULU who declared war. Maybe they bit off more than they can chew...?
I'm feeling pretty nervous though. I don't wanna die, but I don't wanna leave the civ I'm trying to befriend out to dry. This is just an awful era for being able to jump into conflicts.

OK, I guess I lied. I didn't put the pictures up. I've not been feeling great lately, but I'm plodding forward.
CH and Johns made peace after whatever skirmish happened. Not surprised. Now I'm left with some tough choices to make. First, the really bad one (which I should have anticipated!). A Zulu Impi came out of the fog just west of Mabel, and I have an unprotected worker on the gold hill building a road. I was able to pull that fresh axe from Mabel to protect the incoming settler, but... this is where real diplo would be nice. I feel like the Zulu were trying to reciprocate my good will, but I don't think I want to test that good will by giving them the opportunity to snipe a worker from me. So I'll have to move off the hill and basically waste several worker turns, which delays getting the gold city's trade connection up, and also delays hooking up the gold. That sucks, but probably best to play it safe.
The other is what to do about the Settler coming out of Wendy. I'm no longer convinced that settling north of the city is worth the price. For the cost of the settler and maintenance, that city offers me what? Nothing, really. It has no native food resources, and I can't even connect the silks yet. If I had calendar it might be worth it. Might CH be bold enough to plop a settler there in "my" territory? Maybe, but if he does, I'll definitely attempt to punish that ASAP. So, what can I do with this settler? It's a far run to any of the other locations I've had my eye on, and my workers aren't really in a position to do much. My best idea, actually, is to send him on the Galley that's just coming out of Stanford, and maybe try to settle the island that can grab the whales. I think I can get a Warrior loaded up, too. Ideally, I'd scout those islands out first before trying to settle, because I'm not sure it's worth settling now.
I haven't finished my turn, and I have to make the Settler choice now. I should probably log back in to move the endangered worker, at least.... Ughhh.

Notes for my sandbox.
Ugh.
Decided to just connect the corn. Next turn he'll move to the riverside forest to chop. I think the cottaging worker that was going to do this will mine a hill at Soos instead.
Korean power is rising, and I'm getting nervous being next to powerful CH after he had what appears to be a short, victorious war. I might have to pull out the whip soon.
Demos still look OK. I'm 4th in production, about 40 to 60. CH is the leader, presumably. Rome and Persia are 2 and 3, not sure the order (everyone else I have graphs on are below me). 3rd in food, about 100 to 120, so I'm feeling pretty happy about that.
This turn was kind of stressful. I could have avoided the Impi snaffu if I had just sent a unit to guard my worker in the first place. I guess I thought it was unlikely anything would approach in those few turns, but that was obviously just a huge mistake on my part, so that's that.
I think my instinct to use my settler on a more profitable venture is a good one, I just hope I'm not sending him off on a fool's errand. Worst case, it's a crappy island town, but when Currency comes in, I get 2 domestic IC trade routes. Crossing fingers for Sea Food or something else in the fog around that island, because so far the only resources I know of are in 2nd ring.

Something I might have to consider: CH has 10 turns to do whatever he wants. If he wants to try and take a city or two off of me, he could try now. My power chart isn't exactly gonna deter him.

Popped into the game for a second. Did most of the turn. Zulu impi backed off, but who knows if that means he wouldn't have attacked. I settled Gideon, and meant to check to see if it still got trade connection from some water route, but I forgot to look. Someone bounced off me. Also loaded up a warrior and Settler into the Galley, so we'll see what happens with that next turn....
Even though Gideon just steals a 6 food tile from Mabel, I'm up to 2nd in food. People mighta whipped last turn, though.

Civ Stats says that CH did a 1-pop whip and a 3-pop whip. I wonder what the 3-pop whip was. A Library? A wonder?

Okayyyyy
I put a turn into a chop here because the road to the gold hill wasn't finished yet.
Koreans have a presence in the area. I am not sure if this is a large island or part of the mainland.
I didn't finish turn. I have no idea what to do here. Do I settle here? 1S? Then I'd get the whales 3rd ring, maybe. I don't know if that korean city has already popped borders or not. This will still be a marginal city and it'll be 15 turns to border pop at best. Probably 16-17. Should I just load the settler back up and find somewhere else? I don't want this to be the endless settler voyage, because that's such a waste. I'm inclined to just settle in place, maybe squeeze out an extra archer or two somewhere to defend, and do what I can with the city. I am just not sure, it's not a great spot. Main appeal is the whales, I was just really hoping an extra sea food would be in the fog, and now I'm worried about Korea proximity. I wouldn't mind suggestions from anyone willing (and able) to provide.

Whoops, crossposted with you Novice! Do you still approve of settling the island in light of the new information?
