[SPOILERS] Will the Sun(rise) Ever Set on Washington, Mongolia?

Are there any rules of thumb for when and where to build wealth? I'm guessing not really and it's down to my choice, so I doubt anyone can give advice, but with Currency in, I'm not sure if I should use Soos to build wealth for a time, or just build units there. Soos is my big hammer town, and currently is the only place with a barracks. I want to get the SoZ there and eventually build the HE. I know once those two structures are in place I should just make units and never stop, but for the time being I'm not sure. I certainly do need to increase my military, but I am not sure if I should just rely on my commerce income right now, or if I should be building wealth in places as well.

For what it's worth, my current understanding is: If a city doesn't have any necessary infrastructure to build, and it isn't being used to build settlers/workers/units, then build wealth or research. Which means right now I'm just building wealth in cities that lack the production to build anything in a reasonable amount of time, though maybe that's not a good criteria.

Before I play the turn today, here's the shots from T96:

I know Grimace settled that city last turn after I played. I suppose it's not a big deal. I'll just have to burn it down whenever my campaign against him kicks off. Loser Island look like it'll have at least one more good spot on it. Warrior will check for sea food as the galley sails around, but if there's no sea food to the south east, then where the Warrior is currently standing might be a good spot for another city there.

(Also, I will some day take that corn/sheep island from Grimace as well.)

Turn 97

Yup, CH is no scrub (and he's paired with plako right? That's TWO players I don't wanna tangle with). Florence sadly lives, for now. Maybe until I can produce some shock Keshiks or something. frown

I'll probably pillage those mines, though.

Well, there was sea... something there. I could settle where the Warrior is standing. Pros: Whales. Cons: Not on a hill. I know the capital will eventually pick up whales but that's a long ways off. I'll want to explore the rest of this side of the island before deciding on a spot.

Like here! I'd settle south of where the galley is located, so it can pick up (dry) Rice, borrow the sheep, and pick up an ocean fish. The rice can be made wet with Civil Service, though, just farm over that windmill. Or, rather, pillage the windmill and farm that spot later.

What's this shot about? In my sandbox there's a forest on that bare patch. Must have been a forest growth that I never noticed until now. I'll have to tweak my worker orders a bit.

Scary power graph is scary.

They accepted my tribute. Hopefully they will act towards me in the spirit of friendship.

Just a couple things here. I notice that our IND player has stone. I could be in a race for the HG but I have no idea because I have no idea what techs anyone has. I DO know that he researched Currency just a few turns ago, and obviously has Maths and Masonry. I guess... I'll see what happens. Shaka of Rome has Marble AND Stone (I was hoping to grab both of those before CH fucked that up).

I'm going to be so bummed if I lose out on the HG. I could build... the Pyramids instead?? I have no idea what I would use that for, though. Or, I guess, I could save all those pre-chopped forests for something else, like maybe.... well, I wanted the GL, but I don't have access to marble now. I'm just gonna cross my fingers. Elum has mackoti helping out, so they're probably going for the pyramids, right? :P

Played Turn 98, will edit in pictures to the post later, but first just a summary.

The Colossus was built in a far away land. I guess that must have been the Vikings because they are the only Civ I have yet to meet. This turn I also realized that I made an error before. East of the Koreans is the Persians. Their Civ colors were so similar I hadn't realized it. It looks like the Persians have settled that little clam island to the far east of Pacifica. I wonder what sort of space Korea is crammed into. I was planning to wait for HAs to attack Korea, but perhaps after I settle a few more cities, I should just amass a force of whatever units I have available.

Speaking of settling, I spotted furs on the northeast corner of Loser Island. I already have them, but an extra source could be useful for trades down the road. I think I could put a total of 3 cities on the island, so I should hurry up and do that. I will need a couple more galleys, a couple settlers, more workers, and several units to defend the cities. And I should try to hurry because I don't want anyone to plant a city. However, I think if my next city on the island is actually on the eastern side, that might be able to stop anyone from settling the rest. Hopefully.

Later today I'll have to work on my post T100 plan some more.

First two are notes about city build changes I made. I'll have to update the sandbox soon.

Nice island. Next turn I'll find out if there's any more food to the northeast.

Persians.

So I don't know what the best idea was, but at 100% I'm losing 90+ gpt. I earn about half that at full gold. If I did 0/100 for research right now, it'd probably take me 5-6 turns to research the tech, and I'd burn through all my money. Even if I lose a few beakers due to rounding, it seems betters to get the tech in about the same amount of time, but pay less, right? I won't get a ton of overflow, sure, but I'd rather have a steady tech pace. Unless anyone would suggest otherwise?

Oh yeah, in Carib and Florence, CH has 1 Axe, 1 Spear, 1 Chariot; and 2 Axes and 1 spear respectively. I hate seeing those free upgrades on all his units. I haven't even gotten a single event all game long so far.

Okayyyy, played turn. Will put up pics later, but basically.... Zulu dropped a settler in the lovely "tons of food spot" and will get the fish I wanted for Lazy Susan in first ring so that sucks.

The short of it is this: I can get 2 more characters on that island if I hurry (I wouldn't put it past Elum to plop a city down there), and I want to at least fill in my east coast. So that's 6-7 cities I need to get down before I'm basically out of room. I need to figure out how to do that as quickly as possible, so then I can focus on taking some cities from someone else (like Korea).

Turn rolled. Worst case with the Hanging Gardens is that it's down to a coin flip at the end of the turn. Crossing fingers! I'll try to do a larger T100 update later. We'll see. I might save it for T101 though.

....I really need to work on my T101+ plan, but I've been so busy lately. frown

Wow, so Johns just did a series of four 1-pop whips. I wonder what that's about. I guess I'll try to keep an eye on the power graphs?

Also, the forum quotes have been cycling pretty fast, eh? I wonder what this could mean: "Since when does the mighty Genghis Khan fear the Mongols?" -GermanJojo

It could possibly refer to this game. I am the Mongols and Johns is Genghis Khan. But I dunno. Whatever. I just want the turn to roll to see if I actually pulled something off. I guess my next big goal is to settle that island and whatever else I can grab before my greedy neighbors take everything. Then my goal is to put together a big invasion force and take the Great Lighthouse for myself.

I'm gonna guess from the score increase that I landed the HG!
