So, I'm facing Bob as Rhoanna and I'm Kuriorates. It's tempting to settle in the spot where I am, but I think it's better to go south to that hill. There, I can get the extra commerce from flood plains and because I'm Kuriorates, I will have better happiness and be able to get more of them which will give me an edge over teching the Hippus.

Concurrence anyone?

could plant either on that Desert hill near the river, or on the plains north of clams. There are pros and cons to each pick. Clams will be, in a way, more defensive, but the desert hill could be considered a more aggressive move. Ultimately I think the desert hill is the better pick because it gains returns more quickly. The plains north of the Clams would require an early worldspell most likely, in order to work all necessary tiles early enough. And with the desert hill you can absolutely skip fishing without even thinking about it, which could save tech turns in the long run.

(I won't post in Bob's thread for this game, since I posted I'm assuming role of dedlurker for this game in particular, perhaps as I have no official games vs Bob ahahaha)

Yes I think you're right. Fishing is unnecessary for me and it can be very very dangerous to settle anywhere but a hill especially a desert tile.

Aww, Krag, where are the updates? I want to know what's happening in your duel against Bob! (after all, he is MY opponent right now too...)

Holy desert! How did no one go Malakim with these settings?

So, the circled bit is the original starting location. In the screenshot I gave, I had already moved south on my first turn for search of more fertile lands.

Well, Bob, settled on the first turn, and my guess is that he settled in that green spot. What does that mean? Well, it means that that location sucks as a starting location and that his first tech is most likely animal husbandry. Knowing that this is a duel, it's highly possible that he'll go horseback riding immediately after animal husbandry.

Because Bob might rush for horseback riding, it means that I must rush for horseback riding. Because these flood plains are more fertile with more commerce, I should be able to gain a tech lead in getting horseback riding and other techs.

The plan is to barb farm a centaur until we have a sizeable contingent to send to the enemy 24 tiles away. We have to limit his growth while allowing ourselves to grow sufficiently. This game will be hard but fun.

In hindsight I could have gone Malakim, but I wanted a decent counter to Hippus Warcry

I found Bob. Since this is mirror, I now know what his territory looks like

So. I'm kinda vulnerable right now. I have a combat 1 promotion so I have a slight advantage, but I could easily lose this scout. We shall see. I need to think of where to place my next city. Help always appreciated.

Kill them! Kill them all! (I hope that advice is still appropriate considering I'm separately facing Bob this round? smile )

No seriously. He's going to want to cross that desert at some point. You could probably find somewhere to lie in ambush and take out his Scout for an early advantage... You *COULD* lose, but the odds are in your favor. And besides- based on where his Scout is it looks like he hasn't explored the middle of the map yet, so he probably doesn't know it gets IMMENSELY more fertile as he heads East. Knowledge is power... devil

Also, I'd make an aggressive 2nd city plant if I were you (I'll leave just where up to your judgment- I can't see enough of the middle of the map). You want to deny him that center area AT ALL COSTS!
