WW37- For Whom the Bell Trolls

Well I'll show you mine if you show me yours Zak. Perhaps we can go into another room.

Most Day 1s we eventually get something rolling. Novice, if you -were- scum, how would you approach Day 1?

Fenn my question to you was semi-serious.

Why is claiming early uncomfortable for scum? They know that whatever role they have, it's perfectly legitimate for them to claim it. Given the possible benefits for them in a massclaim, I don't see why they'd hesitate.

Has Gazglum played scum before?

Usually, sure.

But here, as Agnes noted, roles and alignment are divorced from each other. There's a decent chance of any scum being able to claim exactly what they have and not expect any flak from that at all.

It then falls back to a mass claim basically being a priority list for the scum to take advantage of, since (as I noted before) the primary advantages of a mass claim - that being, finding liars or roles that don't match up - has been completely negated by the setting.

Yeah, pretty sure I've been scum with him at some point.

I don't think it's a given that they can claim exactly what they have and not stand out. And even if they can, they don't know for sure if that is so until they've seen some town flips.

Those rules are standard phrases that were copied from the last game. But this game was designed well before that one.

To be honest, I find the stance that "scum would welcome a day one mass claim" to be slightly disingenuous.

Earnest scumhunting by getting reads on people and look at their actions has worked quite well the last game. It is IMO superior to massclaiming and running meta-speculation whose roles sound believable or not.

Asking for claims makes more sense lateron when we can question actions done/ have results from scans/watches etc = Have it easier to find liars.

To elaborate, we've played almost 40 games here, we've never had a day one mass claim, and as far as I'm aware the scum have never wanted one. So why would they want one in this game?

Fenn, you're voting for Dtay. Since he's announced he can't be around much this week, do you think he makes a good target to get rid of early?

It was mostly for the alliteration that I voted for dtay, and to perhaps nudge a reaction. I don't intend to lynch him at this stage - there's plenty of time for him to contribute today, and I'd be remiss to chase somebody for Day 1 sparseness when I've been guilty of the same.

Mass claiming wouldn't be so disadvantageous for scum in this gametype as it normally would, but it would still probably be the right move for town. I imagine the real reason we've never had a Day 1 mass claim is because town doesn't want one either; I'd rather not play that game

That seems a little much to make out of vote in the joke stage.

Bah, meant to hit preview. Was going to follow up and ask if you thought if I really wanted to get rid of zakalwe based on my vote? I mean, I even pushed zak to 2 votes compared to Fenn being the first to vote Dtay.

I'm not accusing Fenn of trying to mislynch Dtay on a joke vote. I was thinking that Dtay's self-confessed lack of time for this game means that an argument could be made that he is a least-bad choice for a Day 1 lynch, and I was interested to see if Fenn would make it. I'm trying to do my best Novice impression, I'm not advocating a Dtay lynch.
