out of the loop Q vs OldLion

So :

I have 2 workers, 8 warriors. => mining, including gold mine
also corn farm keeps being pillaged.
There is ygdrassl also, but I have too many barbs for now.

I'm building a new settler and another warrior, and I'm doing exploration-> bronze working.
No copper I'm aware of yet.
I'll build another worker for roads.

I like the idea to go west for next city, but Q"s lizardmen are on that side for now.

Yeah, you need to kill his lizardmen. You probably need a surprise road to pull that off, and at least two warriors per lizard. Start the turn with warriors who can't reach him, build a road toward him and hit him with a lot of units. The first couple will probably lose, but they should wound him enough for the others to finish the job.

Turn 66 already.

Here is the situation :

I build my third city on the hill 4W 2S of my capital because of the gems and dyes.
I still got most of the plains available. (btw I made absolutely no actual calculation)
I've read of spreasdsheets and tools for that, any pointer welcome.

I went all the way to bronze working, with just exploraion as a deviation.
I choose education as the next one, for trading posts, but I have no actual strategy here. What would you do ?

one of Q's lizardmen's died thanks to a polar bear.
the other one still lurks, but I think he is having a hard time, there are lot's of barbs.
let's hope it does not survive with XP...

I have a scout in the NE. He keeps killing animals in defense, but is rebuilding health most of the time and not doing a ot of exploring
Atmost forgot : I popped the lair with my scout and got a disciple of leaves.
I founded the brotherhood in Golden Leane and adopted the religion. Was it a good move ? How can I take advantage of this ?

Also, I do not think Orthus is dead

my current plan :
- road to Yggdrasil. postponed due to barbs and lizardmen, should be doable. health is an issue.
- a new settler available in golden leane in a few turns. settling south. I have an escort ready. need to chose exact position.
- Mining the gems and (possibly) the dye.

finally, I had a culture expansion after end of turn and I could see there is a barb city west. Any advice about what to do with that ?

thanks for any feedback

Well, I probably wouldn't have researched the Leaves, at least not this early, but now that you do have it you might as well make the most of it by getting archery to put some lumbermills on those ancient forests you have. You really need more workers out doing worker stuff- I realize the Lizardman is holding you back some, but you need to be putting down mines and have a road to the Yggdrasil up (edit: I see you intend to start on the latter; good). Animal Husbandry to improve the cows would be nice, but honestly it's not really worth it just to improve that one tile, at least not for a bit.

Long-term tech-wise, get to Priesthood. Settle as many cities as you can, and then pop your world spell. Eight Priests of the Leaves will be a pretty effective fighting force. Research Cartography and adopt City States if city maintenance gets too high.

I would settle for the corn to the east of your capital. 1NW of it seems like a good spot. Another good spot for a different settler is 2 S of the westernmost sugar, to grab the corn + three FP to cottage. That city will be a little expensive though.

I like the southern city because my idea was to go south (geographivcally smile ) in the first place, but cab you explain hte "costly" here ?

Also, in other new, we played a ouple turns since my update and I mangeded to kill his lizardman :
he came to contact SW of timberlin and I sent all my local warriors on the offensive.
I lost 3 but finally killed it with a forth one.

I guess he wanted to prevent yggdrasil attachement.

=> I already sent some reinfrcement from Golden leane and build another one.
So I'm good.

My take on the situation:

I don't see any copper in your screenshots. If there indeed isn't any, a bronze beeline seems pretty weak, although there is an awful lot of jungle. I still think you should concentrate on economy-boosting techs in the early game. Settling directly on sugar is typically a good way to use that tile when you can't chop jungle, and it would give you second-ring corn (and open up a path to those yummy flood plains to the south).

Education is a good tech to research, especially because the demographics show you way behind on GNP, which, along with crop yield, is the key early game category.

Is religious victory enabled? You might be able to win a cheesy victory if he spreads FoL and you can crank out an early great prophet. I'd say using the disciple to found the religion is a good move even if it just denies him the shrine.

I wouldn't worry about capturing the barb city: at this stage of the game I'm usually concentrating on workers and settlers plus an absolute minimal number of fighting units. If you can safely put a unit onto the hill west of the incense, that should give you visibility of the city, so you can keep track of its population at least.

It pains me to see all those unimproved flood plains by Balderham, those are particularly good tiles for the Malakim. How many workers do you have? 1.5 workers per city is usually a good rule of thumb, maybe more since you're creative and have a high happy cap.

You seem to have an enormous number of units in your capital. Are those the escorts for your settler? If so, they should already be on the move to your planned city spot. A big part of being successful at Civ is timing. Warriors are slower than settlers, so they need a head start to arrive at the destination at the same time. You don't ever want settlers or workers standing around: they should be building something or moving to their next spot.

thanks for those suggestions. :-)

Baldeham is a newfounded city, so there are not enough improvements yet.
However I only have 2 workers, (and half). I'm oing to aim for the ratio you suggest. since I'm about to reach 4 cities, it will be 6 soon.

as for sending te warriors in front of the settlers, I blame myself for not thinking about that obvious idea.
I'll do that in the future. (too late for this time, though... :-( )

Leaves is a really nice religion to pop from a lair thanks to the Ancient Forests as well. Revolting was certainly a good idea just to have those start upgrading to good tiles for you for free.

You're currently building a worker in the new city of Balderham at size 1, that usually isn't such a good idea. Generally you want your new cities to start growing immediately and if you need more workers you build them in already developed cities. Since you're already most of the way through you might as well finish him though.

For tech, Education seems a good idea, to get Apprenticeship as well for the extra xp. It's on the way to Code of Laws too, maybe go there afterwards for Aristocracy?

Ah, I missed that you got the Leaves for free from a lair. Yeah, founding the religion and adopting it was def. the right move.

Consider generating a great prophet and using it to bulb the Runes.

First, the current situation :

I build scouts to explore because I hate to be the one in the fog.
As you can see, south scout is super scout, he just ate a griffon for diner.
There is the pyre on the east, and the map limit. There is also a barb. village. it is very new, my scout was there a few turns ago and there was no village.

I'm building a new settler in Golden Leane, so I need to choose where to place a new city.
I see several options.
but....

I had a word with my financial advisor, and he is getting me worried.
Had I not had the monument event, I'd already be out of money. And I'l be out of gold soon again.
That's the downside of expanding too much. (I'm used to be slow in expansion, but I understand you guys prefer to have as many cities as possible as soon as possible.

So, What do I do wrong ? Or how do I balance that ?
I can and will start build cottages. it will help. Is it the way to go ? Should I stop settling for a while ?
How do you balance your finances ?
I have the gut feeling that research under 60% should ring alarms. what is your policy ?
Any consideration on this point is welcome.

The GNP indicator lags behind. (hammers too, actually)
It suggest I'm late in techs already. It is consistent with what I spoke about above.

Is it micromanaging ? If someone can help me sort out what happens, I'd be grateful. I have to improve in this area in order to be more competitive and to give you guys a challenge.

EDIT : I realised my situation screen did not show ressources. so they are added, but are 2 turns later.
See the copper in the far south ?
