EITB XLIII Mapmaking Thread (No Players)

Haven't looked at the map, so you might already be good on this, but...when counting strategics, did you include:
Copper
Horse (or deer or pig, for Ljo and Khazad)
Iron
Mithril
Incense
Reagents
Mana
Gunpowder
Marble?

In particular, Incense and Reagents often trip up new mapmakers, because they're not just used as strategics and it can be late in the game that you notice you need them (high priests and archmages).

The map by default only cares about Copper, Iron, and Horses. The rest may or may not be nearby. I can ask the players exactly what they want to ensure is nearby.

Yeah, the map defaults being untrustworthy is why we want someone with judgment involved in the process smile.

And yeah, some of the later resources just need to be checked for 'on the map somewhere', not 'within 4 tiles of every capital.'

Depending on your timing, I will try to do this. But I still don't expect to have much time until Tuesday.

Other things I tend to look for:
Rivers - either everyone or no one should have a river at their capital.
Freshwater - should be possible to get most places, although you can require irrigation

Gems are a strategic resource as well, although only for a unit nobody ever builds.

Disagree. Gunpowder and Mithril especially are enormously costly late-game investments, and you can't tell if they're around until you've already invested greatly. I don't see any reason not to make sure they're entirely guaranteed to anyone prepared to research that much.

Regents and Incense are different, of course, in that they're visible from gamestart - I'd still have one in each players area, but it's not something you need to bend over backward for.
Erebus in the Balance - a FFH Modmod based around balancing and polishing FFH for streamlined competitive play.

It turns out that Auroarcher also wanted Decius of the Calabim. I rerolled the RNG again. DaveV: 1 Dreylin: 2 and Auroarcher: 3. I got a 2, so Dreylin stays as Decius and Dave as Volanna. Auroarcher will be Kandros Fir of the Khazad

1. jalapeno 8 PM-midnight EDT : Dain of the Amurites
2. Dreylin 8-11 PM CDT (9PM-midnight EDT) : Decius of the Calabim
3. Ventessel 4:30-5:30 AM or lunchtime or 6-9 PM EDT : Cardith Lorda of the Kuriorates
4. DaveV 6-7 AM or lunchtime or 6-9 PM EDT : Volanna of the Svartalfar
5. Aurorarcher 2-4 PM EDT, sometimes 1-4 AM : Kandros Fir of the Khazad

Neat. Jalapeno's pick is looking awfully squishy compared with the rest. What size map will you be using, Standard or Large?

Mapmaking Philosophy / Decisions

1. I rerolled maps until I found a map where I thought everyone had a decent start (i.e. at least 1 grain resource) where my first initial instinct for the majority of the civs was positive (the more positive the better).
2. I added lairs and unique improvements via the automatic map generator after approving a map.
3. I only want to affect the map beyond original choices as little as possible. I don't want to pick winners and losers.
4. In placing improvements, I use a Random Number Generator in the following fashion:
A. Left (1) or Right (2)
B. 1-12
C. Up (1) or Down (2)
D. 1-12

If I get an invalid square, I roll again

Commentary:

Player 1: Amurite

1. Deer: 10 tiles away
2. Copper: 5 tiles away
3. Horses: 5 tiles away
4. Pigs: 6 tiles away
5. Mana: 5 tiles away, 11 tiles away. Generated a Mana node 0 tiles north/south, 0 tiles left/right. 0 tiles from starting position.
6. Nearby Opponents: Kuriorates: 17 tiles , Sidar 24 tiles
7. Erased 1 Goblin fort 4 tiles to the south. This was directly in the way of their strategic resources. There is already a goblin fort to the west of them not far away.

Player 2: Sheiam

1. Deer: 10 tiles away
2. Copper: 6 tiles away
3. Horses: 7 tiles away
4. Pigs: 1 tile away
5. Mana: 12 tiles away, Added 1 mana node, 1 down and 1 right from starting position: 1 tile away, Added 1 mana node 6 south and 0 right/left from starting position: 6 tiles away
6. Nearby Opponents: Kuriorates: 15 tiles away, Sidar: 25 tiles away
7. Erased 1 Goblin fort 4 tiles to the south. This was directly in the way of their strategic resources. There is already a goblin fort to the west of them not far away.

Player 3: Kuriorates

1. Deer: 5 tiles away
2. Copper: 2 tiles away
3. Horses: 4 tiles away
4. Pigs: 1 tile away
5. Mana: 6 tiles away, 9 tiles away, 10 tiles away
6. Nearby Opponents: Calabim 23, Sheiam: 15 tiles

Player 4: Calabim

1. Deer: Nowhere Close at all: Placed a Deer 5 North and 2 West of starting position
2. Copper: 8 tiles away
3. Horses: 5 tiles away
4. Pigs: 6 tiles away
5. Mana: 3 tiles away, 11 tiles away, 11 tiles away
6: Nearby Opponents: Sidar: 15 tiles, Kuriorates: 23
7. Ice nearby Calabim removed. Ice seemed out of place and an unnecessary negative affect for an area already lacking resources. I'd prefer to remove all ice all over the map.

Player 5: Sidar

1. Deer: Nowhere Close at all: Placed a deer 6 North and 5 West of Starting position. Changed Flood Plains to a Grassland Deer Tile. 8 tiles away.
2. Copper: 4 tiles away
3. Horses: 4 tiles away
4. Pigs: 2 tiles away
5. Mana : 5 tiles away, 7 tiles away . Added 1 mana node 3 up and 3 left of starting position: 4 tiles away
6. Nearby Opponents: Calabim: 15 tiles, Amurites: 25 tiles, Kuriorates: 21 Tiles, Sheiam: 15 tiles

The players asked for Standard so Standard it is!

Cool, I'm glad they gave you a specific size. It's pretty awkward if the Kurios are involved and the mapmaker has to decide what to use, since some commonly-used "large"-sized scripts end up being the same size as "standard" for other types.
