Dreylin stops for a bite with Decius

t36 -

Between turns the Goblin suicided on Gabriel; 2.3/3, but still 5t to heal in place so I sent him to sit in Ivor, while Madeleine will take his place. Ivor the Engine founded:

I've got my Worker micro spun out to t50 ... provided I settle the Eastern spot. I had a chance to chat with Q about it this afternoon and he wasn't very positive about that choice - too far away, not enough shared tiles, etc. He then suggested 2S of the Mana Node (1E of the Corn), which I think is an awful spot. Yes, it does share a whole passel of tiles with the Capital, but they're all Food tiles and it really adds nothing of value without a border pop. It's Hammers and Happy that I'm short of here, and that spot only adds one hill. The Eastern spot adds 3 hills first ring, can grab the Pigs from Ivor, and has 3 additional grassland river tiles that can be farmed. Then once the border pops it grabs Cows, Rice and the all-important Dyes. It also has coastal access, the importance of which as I learned from '39 cannot be understated. I will be settling this spot, but I can be convinced that it's not right for City #3.

Another spot which I want sooner rather than later is the SW city that grabs the Sheep and the Rice from Bagpuss' 3rd Ring. It does only share a few tiles (of value) with the Capital, but is going to be a solid production city from the get-go. The problem with this as City #3 is that the shared tiles have not been improved yet and my Workers are stuck in the NE at Ivor. They can't get turned around fast enough to give it a running start, and without roads it's a 3turn Settler move to get there.

Looking again, the spot 2S of the Corn (1W of the Copper) could have good potential as City 3. No Worker setup needed as it can rob the Corn and FP from Bagpuss while waiting for the Rice to come online. It adds one hill, but also the Copper which is much better than a hill. It's also less important to pop 2nd Ring, so wouldn't need to first-build a Monument. It does, however invalidate most of my dotmap in the area which is less than ideal, so I do need to take a long look at it before switching horses. (Maybe AH will pop Horses somewhere that will sway me lol)

As I said earlier, Happiness is a real constraint here, particularly (as Qgqqqqq reminded me) the Governor's Manors give an extra unhappy. I'm really considering an early push towards a Religion is the right course to follow (with OO being the obvious due to the quantity of water on the map). Looking at it though, maybe I could stop at Mysticism and just throw up Pagan Temples for the +2Happy, since I'm in Religion civic anyway. hmm

AH will run me through my gold reserve, then it will be saving for a while so there'll be time for some more thought before making a run.

Heh, I get the critique of 2S. It was more to show the value I put in sharing tiles - it's not top of the reasons for '39, but it is the micro decision I'm perhaps most proud of. A more realistic one would be SE of the mana. I get your reasons for not wanting that, and to some extent I agree...but the distance from the capital as main producer is considerable, and it's going to take a fair bit of resources setting up.

Honestly, I'm more in favor of your spot than anything south - it just doesn't make sense from a micro PoV to have them run back at that stage, even for copper.

What's the tech timetable compared to the settlement timetable, btw? About when would OO come in? Or, as an alternative, when could Drama come in?

OK, so what have I got planned out so far:

Bagpuss:

Bloodpet build finished at EoT with 1h overflow and 20/21 food in the box at Happy cap. Working Corn, FP, Incense, 2xCotton & Mine/Farm is 14fh per turn, which is an 11t Settler due EoT47. I could speed that a turn by with a Chop (see Workers) or by working another Mine/Farm over one of the Cotton for 2t (cost - 6c), which is something to consider (again, see Workers).

Ivor:

The Rice Farm comes online in 2t enabling exact growth to size 3 in 5t; size 4 in a further 2t with some overflow and then the Farms start trading with Mines to reach size 5 and produce a Bloodpet at EoT44. T45 it can be working the Rice, Pigs and 3xMines for 6f 11h. Currently I have it then producing a further 2 Bloodpets over the next 3t and then switching to fh units at 17/t (3t Workers of 9t Settlers). However if instead I went straight to Worker after the first Bloodpet, then I don't need the 3rd Mine online as fast so I can fiddle about with the Worker micro and hmmm contemplate maybe that needs looking at some more.

Workers:

Currently have 1 on the Rice and one just finished a Mine at Bagpuss. The latter will join the former to complete the Rice Farm on t38; it's not very efficient and wastes a Worker turn (well, 1t of a random road), but significantly affects the growth curve at Ivor if that Farm is delayed. From there they split to put down 2Mines (Hammers > Food if going for 3x Bloodpets) to t42. One then Pastures the Pigs, while the other heads back to Bagpuss to start the Road to the Eastern site. The other joins and they enable the Settler to 1t to the PHF 1W of the target and so settle in 2t. The actual road connection will be delayed by a turn. Then they are joined by Worker #3 and 2 improve the new site while 1 heads back to Bagpuss to Farm Rice or Mine the SW hill or whatever.

Right, so that's the plan I had last night. Now writing it out has suggested several ways that it could be improved ... and that's without trying to compare with the alternative SE city site. More work to do!

OK, 2hrs micro work and the Workers / Ivor look much cleaner and I can comfortably choose which of the 2 sites I want to head for.

Workers finish Rice and move to Pigs and Plains Hill bringing both online t42. Working the Pigs allows me to start working the new Mine earlier without delaying growth to size 5 (still due at EoT44). It also means that 1 Bloodpet finishes t43 and I can 2t a second t45, while only working the PH and one GH Mine. Then switching to fh builds means I don't need the second GH Mine online for quite some time, which then frees up 4 Worker turns. Plenty to transfer one or both Workers to the South to prep for a city down there. goodjob

Now to work out the potential growth curves on each of them to make a decision ... due in 5t when the Worker micro diverges again!

Nothing much happening. I briefly considered sending the new Bloodpet to scout a bit to the SW, but then decided that stepping out of borders wasn't the wisest thing he could do, so he turned around and will lurk to support the next city site.

Still not decided where that will be for sure; I plan on messing around with it tonight incase we do get a blitz scheduled for Saturday. Right now I'm leaning towards the Southern spot because it pulls high-value tiles from Bagpuss rather than Ivor. The capital is (generally) working commerce tiles over high fh tiles, so Ivor is actually a better Settler pump at size 5 with 17fh per turn - or 8.5t Settlers - passing the Pigs to the Eastern city would drop that to 15fh/t or 10t Settlers. Bagpuss OTOH is only at 12fh/t in Commerce config (could be max 18fh/t, but probably 16fh/t & working Incense is more realistic), and would be better suited as Worker pump - especially if losing access temporarily to the 2 best tiles.

Bagpuss: Settler - Worker
Ivor: BPx2 - Worker (~t47) - Settler ~t55

I think the Worker micro supports pushing Bagpuss' Settler forward by a turn, so will probably do that. Existing Workers improve the new site; Ivor's Worker finishes last improvements there and then sets up for the Eastern spot.

I've not dug into research path yet (other than updating the tech tree image to include the values for reference at work). Education - CoL is the short-term plan to get to GMs ASAP ... unless the barbs start making life difficult and I need to grab BW.

Edit: interesting that DaveV, Jalepeno & Aurorarcher all updated the same turn. Suggests that maybe there's been some meetings & greetings recently. Also C&D is boring.

OK, I've run some sims and I'm back to liking the Eastern spot over the Southern spot for the next location.

Both found on t48; Southern spot maxes at Size5 EoT 54, but the Eastern takes an extra turn. The Southern site generates more foodhammers on its own (adjusting both for the tiles borrowed from adjacent cities), however the Eastern site would connect the Dyes ~t63 and allow all cities to grow by a size - likely outweighing the single-city gain. Neither are great Commerce contributors, but the Eastern spot does generate more from the riverside tiles worked.

Next city would follow ~t60/61 with a Settler from Ivor ... or maybe from Bagpuss if City#3 wasn't South and stealing tiles. Well, that can be looked at in a few turns since the Worker micro is now set for another 10t regardless of location.

Sorry if this is stupid, but are you still considering city 3? Or have we moved on?

Yes, still looking at city #3. The Eastern coastal spot that you don't particularly like verses the Southern spot next to the Copper.

Builder turns. I finally remembered to look for my Horses:

Aurorarcher just got the Land points for his second city, so has jumped ahead for a while. I reckon I'm 1.5-2techs ahead of most of them, but that is narrowing. With an event fund in hand, I'll turn research back on next turn.
