I don't want to lose us a doctor because we were too liberal with the torture ability. Or worse, to give a doctor to the scum team.

I'm arguing that it's probably balanced in some way to be slightly beneficial for town, on average, or the mechanism would not be included in the setup.
The torturer provides us with the opportunity to verify the alignment of one person every day, in addition to a lynch. If we find scum, we get a perfect lynch target, if not, we have a confirmed town. That is ridiculously powerful. If it is balanced, then it must come with some rather harsh penalties attached, otherwise it would be game breaking for town. I highly doubt the cost will be light to us. I urge we only use it when we have a solid lead, not as a , hey I have this hammer here, and what do you know, I see a nail.

With great power comes great chances of the village murdering itself with it. See the everyone is a one shot day vig game.

..or great chances of village steamrolling scum, viz the recent game where I was dayvigged by Goreripper. We've probably been given a hammer because scum have a nail gun.
I agree our torturing equipment should be handled with care, but then again we may not have many chances of using it.
I have to run.

Something funny about hammers and nails and torturing equipment.
If you know what I mean.

True. I forgot about the last game I ran.
I guess my concern is that how this was presented, it feels less of a nice big village hammer to counteract a nail gun. Especially with the warning about side effects. It feels more of a double edged sword, with no counterpart, than can work equally well for either side by itself.
Although we won't really really know til we use it on someone and see what they say it does. If they are trustworthy to report that back.

I just had a sudden thought : the OP says the torturer gets to know the alignement. Does that mean the torturer is basically a day cop whose target is decided by majority vote ?

Yaw, I wish.
I think its interesting because not only does this torture thing work as a village targeted day cop, it also forces more participation from the village earlier so props to Serdoa.
The thing about the torture is that it is available to us, and as such its a tool. Torture is unreliable in the real world though so I wouldn't be surprised if the mechanics in game mimic that to some degree.
Jabbz has an interesting point about town losing abilities, but I guess I'm not as risk averse... If I can shoot as a vig I usually do so... I would vote to use torture (in game ). I would also start the votes for lynch as well. There's no point in holding back.
I mean should we try to get Mattimeo to talk?
And I wonder if novice has hammer envy.
