Has anyone else come to this conclusion?
If you are typically an early-game turtler like me, you like to avoid all AI contact at all costs. No AI contact = no possibility for early war. Sure, they will send scouts and the occasional colony ship, but no fleets. You can build factories and research to your heart's content while the AIs get bogged down battling each other. There's nothing better I love than to see a map with a big void and with hostile planets between me and where the AIs must be.
In these cases, I sometimes actively avoid researching range tech, especially if I can colonize several planets with only range 4 or 5. After that, I will focus on engines in the propulsion tree, or if range tech is the only thing that comes up, I will dial-down the propulsion research to a bare trickle until I feel like all of my planets are close to mature and ready to defend themselves.
Also, I feel like trade is often not worth it. By the time the income is ripening, the AI go and declare war, meaning it has only cost me money in the interim
