As far as I understand it, the diplomatic rules are for 1 message per turn.
My interpretation is that this is either 1 e-mail, 1 in-game message, or a brief IM chat.
In practice, the golden rule is that you do not hold a save hostage in order to wait on a message, or in other words, as long as diplomacy does not get in the way of turn pace it is more or less acceptable.
I think the most I ever did in one turn was 2 e-mails plus a brief IM chat, but that was all in quick succession and related to one particular topic. After that event I have largely steered clear from IM chats in order to not take a 'slippery slope', with the help of 3rd party input/advice.
In general I would consider this a '1 message per turn, by any means, with leniency' --- my broad interpretation would include either a single lengthy and multi-topic'd email, or several brief communications all focused on one topic, so long as it does not affect turn pace. To my knowledge this approach has not caused any problems.
