[Tasunke's Spoilers Thread] Flauros of the Calabim

So then, have their been any interesting developments? I'd like to see some demographics. And what is the current situation with Ellimist??

Sorry Marcus, it's been pretty hectic of late. Maybe I'll write some reports tonight. Hopefully I'll get the save ... Zzzz

Highlights:

Ellimist used the great merchant to start a golden age, which might be why our stats are presently on par. I do feel a bit overextended, but I suppose that just means I'm doing it right.

Also I broke my own ceasefire and captured his island city, leading him to ask for a concession in the public thread.

Market in Alpha, Culture in Alexigrad (t94)

Here is a pic of the Captured/Conquered Island. No doubt endless fuming was had by Ellimist on account of this baby.

It brought my total cities up from 11 to 12, and his total cities down from 8 to 7. A three spread is much less intimidating than a 5 spread eh? :P
Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if this ended up in a concession, unless certain other people did surprise me. But I do still think that Ellimist's call for concession was a bit premature. My conquest of Alexigrad left his Great Merchant and a Worker stranded. He spent his Great Merchant (who it seemed he was saving) on a Golden Age, and either deleted the worker, or ferried it to Failfish. (there were +2 Tririmes and +1 Workers in Failfish the turn after the (real) war began)

Assuming he was planning to ferry the GM, why ferry the worker instead? I have a few ideas
#1, he was loath to delete any units
#2, he figured a GA now, during my attack, would be more useful than a GA down the road, even if economically less convenient
#3, his plans for the GM somehow became irrelevant during my declaration of war?? and therefore he used it in a more expedient way#
The Conquered city of Alexigrad had 2 warriors defending it. One wore the Timor mask and the other had nothing much to show for it. I sent in a burning blooded Moroi ... thinking it would die. It didn't. Instead it killed the Mask-wielder and gained significant Xperience, which forced me to delete it, and destroy it using my spare warrior.

My original plan was to use the fear-immunity from burning blood to bypass the Timor's Mask as follows.
#1, BB Moroi would weaken the fear-warrior with the Mask.
#2, the War Elephant would stomp all over the non-masked warrior (this DID happen)
#3, the Warrior would have good enough odds on the Mask-wielder to risk an attack ... which would hopefully land. (if it didn't ... well ... the next turn I would have had more warriors coming up in boats, so 2 Wars + 1 War Elephant would have hopefully been enough to crack it. Ultimately it was probably *more* of a gamble than I thought about at the time, however with enough Morois ... the mask would have been meaningless. I could perhaps have delayed my war by about 5 turns or so, in order to get enough forces in place to minimize my risks ... however I would also be risking reinforcements on Ellimist's side ... and as he pointed out to me in a DIPLOMACY of recent time, defense has the odds in a melee vs melee war (at this tech level). Therefore I figured, why not make the most of my peculiarly strong WAR ELEPHANT while the regular armies on both sides were rather small :P

I suppose my largest concern at this point is if Ellimist builds MANY BOATS in an attempt to foil my plans for Island City Ownership*™

It would have been highly difficult (or at least inconvenient/ non profitable) for me to have aquired more than one island city in any other way than force against Ellimist. There appears to be one to the far south (of unknown splendors), and a rather poor ice-island in the north-west. Neither islands would be easy to access from my primary port cities. However!! I did have a spectacularly large Island just off of my coast ... and Ellimist just happened to have been occupying it. :3

While perhaps this early move against Ellimist was a risk (ie, before I was 100% ready to see this war through to the end), the Island is quite close to my mainland, therefore I have good confidence that with even a minimal navy I will be able to consistently resupply it as needed. I only hope the extra trade route income is worth it lol

DEMOGRAPHICS!!

As you can see, Ellimist appears to be growing quite Vertically at the moment. His 'top two' cities are 10 and 12 pop while my 'top two' are 9 and 11 pop. Demographics wise, it says he has a higher population than me, which I was inclined to believe, but Ellimist, per public thread, seems to think otherwise. Perhaps Pop growths beyond size 10 are disproportionately larger than lesser pop growths?? If larger cities are disproportionately counted in Population stats, then it would potentially make more sense as to how a Nation with less 'citizens' could be counted as having a higher overall population.

As you can also see, Amurites and Balseraphs are technically above me in MFG, still. Ellimist seemed convinced that Leo Eleba's MFG (and Golden Age) would crash on turn 91/92, however this does not seem to have been the case. Revelry is clearly longer than a typical golden age, and I'm not certain if even Old Lion knows for how much longer it will truly continue. Still, the fact that these two primary rivals are being boosted by a golden age (and only barely greater than I) is quite heartening. The massive MFG boost I saw from Ellimist had worried me much more greatly until I realized that it was due to a Golden Age. Still though, I do wonder why his GNP has not seemed greatly effected. I assume the loss of an island city + loss of foreign trade routes may have had something to do with it. Also, perhaps he has switched citizens over from GNP roles to Production roles. It would make sense if he was altering his economy in conjunction with the Golden Age, to maximize his production boost.

I do wish that the Balseraphs had played a better game though. Their expansion could have been a bit better, and while Loki was needlessly wasted, it was revealed to me that there are other ways to kill Loki than trapping him within the walls of a city. Surely this alternate method may have taken OldLion for quite a surprise.

One positive outcome is that Lion might have been able to build the Heroic Shrine. Not the most useful building at this stage of the game, but certainly something that could give him an edge. I am uncertain if the extra promotion stacks with an Adept's natural starting freepromo, or if the Shrine is useless for the magical line. I know that prior to the BTS version, it sadly did not stack.

What I mean to say about OldLion however is this ....

He gave several interesting pieces of diplomacy, and I think he was seriously trying to roleplay a madman (as Perpentach is known for) and I greatly admire his capacity for roleplay in diplomacy. However, I have not heard back from him regarding any recent diplomacy, and I can only hope that he is taking actions which will help gain his nation further ground. I even suggested one or two potential city sites for his further expansion!! Sites that, in my opinion, would have been much more beneficial than his most recent Desert-Border city.

Perhaps there was a significant barbarian threat from the west, which had prevented expansion as quickly as he would have liked, as evidenced by a Barbarian City near Pristine Pass ... certainly not a good combination for peaceable settlement. Not only that, but do my eyes deceive me?? A Lizardman Ruins AND a Goblin hut? With the wrong rolls, he would have easily been dealing with a steady stream of barbarians invading! Granted, some may have gone south towards ellimist, but certainly not all ... especially of the lizards! And if he is having to deal with those 8 str Gargoyles, I will certainly be praying for him.

OldLion has not yet joined in the war against Ellimist, however he has previously voiced a distaste for his Hero-killing tactics (as I had disliked his penchant for killing scouts). Therefore I think there is at least the *possibility* that he will join in (in a war) ... but it might take some convincing. In case he goes a magic path, I might have to trade him some Death mana for his entrance into the war ... later on .... LOL!!! devil

Any plans for expansion? Or are you 100% focused on the war?

Note FOUR cities with only 1 population!!! xD

three of these were recently settled, while one was recently captured.

22% more commerce
21% more food

I would bet the other Tririme is off to add troops to the Island.
