Sorry lurkers for not reporting directly from the sidelines. Went slightly awol during the weekend when I had trouble getting civ time not outside our side of the split or during macks sessions.
I’ll try to do a bit of a recap and slightly more detailed version now though.

The war was kicked off by entering Zulu borders and checking out the fairly good defenses in the Ural (previously shown).
After this, the battle for Grozny ensued. Combats that followed went like this:

sword vs axe: 28,8% win
BGNs bold bears vs impi 88,9% loss (2 hits)
axe vs impi 100% win (2 hits)
ha vs scout 100% win

which led to us taking the city:

No infrastructure and few resources completely of its own, but with time this city will become decent enough.

Mack asked me at this point whether we should play a slightly riskier strategy and send the horse archers south threatening the Cap, but I for one (and I believe mack as well) preferred a safer setup for taking the Ural next turn.

After the reload issues (where I still don’t understand what might’ve caused the thing) Donovan decided to retreat all units from the Ural, apart from an axe, an impi and a scout.
Mackoti decided to bombard with one cat and then attack, leading with two others.
The cats were slightly unlucky, but that was more than made up for when we sent in the hitters:

cat vs axe: 5,8% loss (1 hit)
cat vs axe 45,3% flawless loss.
ha vs impi: 31,4% flawless win!
chariot vs axe: 68,5% win
axe vs scout: 100% win

Have you looked at that, both the granary and the forge survived! dance
Some unit shuffling then followed and suddenly Mack was forking the capital (luckily not on a hill which I speculated earlier it could be).
I’m not sure if Donovan reinforced at all or gave it up for dead, but the outcome was nonetheless as follows:

ha vs impi 3,4% loss (3 hits)
ha vs impi 3,8% withdraw (1 hit)
ha vs impi 19,1% loss
ha vs impi: 47,3% loss
ha vs impi: 71,2% win
ha vs impi: 97,9% win

getting us this city:

The forge I’m very happy about, but I would’ve preferred a granary to the lighthouse. Can’t complain though. As mentioned earlier the Colossus seems a bit of a smoke build considering the wonder only gives 2c to water tiles in the city it is built in for this version. I think mentally I had prepared for finding the Colossus in DZs whale city (which might have more water tiles) pre-invasion, but honestly I’m not disappointed. The fact the the wonder is located in a weaker city only means that I won’t feel as bad about beelining a technology that obsoletes the wonder…

I then tried to compile an overview picture of the current situation. Note that this is just after city capture and we still have lots of units to move around. (you may also note how I messed up and pasted 3 ha’s twice and omitted units on sugar and another tile, but don’t expect me to redo this…)

Please recognize that Donovan is far from dead yet and Mondatta will be a tough nut to crack. Sevastopol might otherwise be of lesser concern to grab early, but once the Ural comes out of resistance it would be nice to be able to use the rice and cows.

By the way mackoti, what’s your idea with renaming the cities? Initially I thought perhaps about keeping old names in respect of previous owners. If you want new names I’m definitely ok with that as well, but it’s nice to know your thoughts about them.

Miscellaneous thoughts:

I wonder if we should settle our first Great General in Lapua?
Generally I like making the first gg a super-medic, but think about Lapua:
It has a barracks and a stable - that's 5xp
We will build a Colosseum for the HE -> 6xp
We're on a straight route to Vassalage -> 8xp
Settling the gg would -> 10xp knights (/ha's)

10xp means we could produce amphibious horses out of the gate.
Combine that with us pretty much beelining astro and suddenly we could get a very interesting surprise attack force. Who we'd hit might be a later question, but for instance REM has some pretty nice cities along the coast and probably most of his army locked up with Commodore and Elkad. Or then we might find say Krills cap on the other continent? or HAKs shrine that we don't want to fall into the wrong hands...?

Elkad joined Commodore (who has opened borders with us now) in war against REM. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I don't mind REM stalling, but I want him to inflict some real pain on Commodore first. Getting the mids (and one other city) might even be enough, but my instincts would prefer even larger conquests (and destruction of armies devil ).

Someone landed the Parthenon and my gut tells me it was Ichabod who I believe also got the SoZ. This could become quite the wonder play from these guys, wonder if they're picking up tGL and Music as well?

Hmm, REM has taken 3 cities from Commodore this turn. Suddenly I'm quite happy that Elkad joined the war... wink

I am afraid elkad chosed unvisely now, and he will falow short after comodore. As i know Comm he builded a nice economy for rem so Rem just need to wait for comodore cities finish revolting and will have vilages ready to work and more then that he will build some librarieries for superbufed scientist.

As you seen commodore is totaly unprepared for this beliving he plays against a noob, but REM has loads of experinece atacking with Ha , as on ladder thats the way to go an spears never stop Ha when you have a large emipre. The only counter you have practicaly is having Ha yourself and some spears.Maybe REM is more experienced in atacking with Ha then me ,but beter the 90% of rb thas for sure. And i bet he got to fight as well swords axes.

I think Comm counted to much on his reputation but not good enough to save him from REM.The other guy which i think can execute a perfect HA is OT4E to bad he didnt showed one.

Yeah, I'm counting 12 units he could attack with next turn. 13 when he finishes a unit from Mondatta, 14 if he evacuates the impi from Sevastopol (which is besieged by a small, but probably large enough number of our units). Next turn we'll be on flat ground without defensive bonuses so it might be quite tempting to attack (though I'm not sure if it's actually worth it?). Alternatively he could hit his former cap this turn with decent chances of retaking it (ha's against axe and injured ha, impi against chariot).
I guess this is the real reason why we've built such a large stack though, to be able to soak up collateral or whither down his defenders if he chooses to stay in place and make a stand.

Elkad managed to grab (looks like he razed it??) a decently sized city from REM this turn, but the power graph doesn't tell a story about him being particularly well prepared:

You might well be right mackoti that Elkad just signed his own death warrant, but on the other hand he might've been next anyway and this way it's possible that he got to hit some injured units or similar thing. I guess only time will tell.
