Mutt is the generic term for a mixed-breed dog. Although it can also be used to refer to any dog or canine. It seems to overlap with crossbred to me, except that I would put Lab as my first favorite guess instead of middling like it was before.
'Mutt' has other connotations, basically those you'd expect from the meaning. It can be sort of an insult from 'old money' to 'blue collar', but also used as a badge of honor by people who don't care who their ancestors were. A lot of americans call themselves mutts, once you're to the point where you discuss your ancestry as '1/16 Irish, 5/16 German, 3/16 English...'
I also like Hood, on the chance that DaveV is referring to the Little Red Riding Hood story, which of course contains a wolf. But I'd go with Lab first.
