I think it's a pair of things.
A) The setup was to choose players first, and then agree on settings. A faster way is to choose settings first and let people who are ok with the settings sign up. So a lot more things have had to be negotiated than usual.
B) Ceiliazul's trying to find the sweet spot of random-minimal edits + well balanced. Aka the Holy Grail. For a very critical audience of experts. And he couldn't start until he was confident part A) was settled down.

Yeah that makes sense, thanks.

Any chance that the map is far enough along that we can see starts? It's been so long since I've played a game, I forgot how much I like getting my micro fix.

Yes.

...Your start sir. Only the starting city radius is firm, and pay no mind to the little green icon in the top left, the real thing will start with RBmod.

Are we actually all starting with two archers, or is that just an artifact of map creation?

I stared at that start for 5 minutes and I varied wildly between thinking it's really bad and thinking it's kinda great, and I eventually landed somewhere in between. There's not a single 5F or 6F tile pre-Lighthouse so that part kinda sucks, but if we go with America we start with Fishing, and those Sugars are basically Floodplains tiles without the unhealthiness. All things considered, this is supposed to be a lightly edited map, right? In that case, the start quality ticks up a couple notches, since the lush starts of most games we've run here tend to be artificial and not really reflect starts you actually get in a SP game. Longterm it's a solid hybrid capital with lots of riverside grassland but also lots of hills.

The main thing I like about the start is the presence of Calendar resources suggest we're in one of the more lush regions of the map, so we're likely to have quality expansion options. Tile bleeding suggests north of us is jungle which makes sense, so we're just south of the jungle strip, which also means we're likely to have a relatively safe northern border for awhile. Unless barbarians are on.

One thought: if we get ourselves to Bronze Working quickly, these forests could be converted into lightning-fast IMP settlers.

So are you definitely going to go with Charlemagne of America, or are you having second thoughts?

I'm pretty solid on Charlie. He isn't just a surge in the polls, he's here to stay.

Edit for officialness: Ceil, I choose Charlemagne of America
