Use them as bait or as tactical defenders? If your situation is hopeless then do what you feel is best. Remember, an opponent can only use a unit to attack once per turn. Maybe force a choice between capturing a free worker (bait) or being disciplined and reserving units for attacking. You could surround a city with them so that your opponent would have to waste at least one attack by cutting down your worker.

I'm guessing chopping is out of the question?

Been awhile since I posted here. This is basically the end - I think I'll survive this turn, but no way do I survive 2.




I have 25 defenders (I have a WE finishing) and he has 26 hitters. My guess is that i'll win 5 or 6 battles next turn (mounted units do get bonuses from cross river attacks), but he has more knights around, so I doubt very much that I survive 2 rounds. And even if I do, Barteq will be by soon.

What's happened over the last 10 turns?

dtay ate my north, all the way to Huh?
Molach took Unboiled Egg back, but then got attacked and doesn't seem to be doing all that great over there.
Adrien took his cities back and took my border cities with him.
barteq finally got in the game and took the one city - he'll take a 2nd next turn.

I suspect I screwed up my defense in Urination Time - I attacked out with cats - the problem is, I didn't kill many units and he didn't have to sacrifice many cats. None of my units can stand up to knights, but I think I could have cost him more by holding up behind walls.

I want to thank everyone who came by to comment - it was a fun game. After I'm gone, I'll do an analysis of my mistakes (and there were many of them!)

I didn't grab a pic, but barteq took sting pain. dtay spent the turn bombarding defense, which is smart, since he's attacking across a river and onto a hill. It will be interesting to see what happens if barteq moves up - it's quite possible that barteq actually takes my cap, which would be interesting.

This is all on me - I made a ton of mistakes this game. Strategic, tactical - mistakes with city placement, with tech order, probably with micro. I think I got a little screwed by barteq's expansion - I should have reacted more murderously to that I got more screwed by both molach and barteq getting free barb cities. dtay expanded at me, too, but it's not like he had a choice - I'm fairly positive he was supposed to get that land and I would never have been able to hold it, anyway.

To give an idea of how my play was poor, I had 0 GP generated (other than great generals, of course). That's just horrible for game that is out of the classical era - just terrible.

Urination Time was simply in the wrong place - I convinced myself that it was better in the long run for it to be where I put it, but it should have been 1 W. Frankly, I think I probably should have gone south with that settler and set up a run into the wooded area to the SW.

Unboiled Egg could easily have been better off 1W, taking advantage of the pigs. I was worried I would lose the rice to Molach's culture, though. I'll be interested to read what Molach had to say about that settling - clearly, where I went was provocative.

My defense of Unboiled Egg was... lacking. I whipped in barracks, which is ok, but looking back, I'd rather have had an extra axe and archer than an archer with CGII. I think that it holds with 2 more defenders.

I whipped in a lib in Huh? instead of what I probably should have done, which was whip in another settler.

My defense against barteq was terrible. I don't think I ever got walls into the city he attacked and losign that city really screwed me up.

I probably should not have put the 2nd city I put against molach - that was a strategic mistake, I think.

I made a couple of war mistakes, as well. I probably should have picked up HBR much, much earlier, and tried to roll someone like dtay, or I should have built and took out someone with slow movers and cats. In any case, I should not have done what I did, which is attack Adrien and then attack molach - that just doesnn't work. And the 3 pronged attack on molach? that's terrible.

I had a lot of fun in the game, though. And I don't want to take anything away from my opponents - I think dray's played a nice game and Molach did, too - he just got screwed, badly. I think he'll be happy to never start next to me again, though

oh - and thanks for the words about the thread. I made an effort for this game. In PB 18, I fell off, quite badly. And I figure reporting is the best way to pay back the hard work that the mapmakers put into the game. And I think this is a great map - I know I've bitched about stuff, but I theoretically really like floodplain ice I had really interesting land that I didn't do justice too. dtay, for instance, had similar land to me and is kicking butt...

I tried to make this a better thread than my PB 18 one. The games are at least partly for the lurkers. I just hope that the next game I play I can actually not get run over by knights. I take as a plus that I'm no longer getting my cap razed from out of the fog Not so good that I am defending against knights without LB, though...
