If performance is sluggish, open DOSBOX.conf and set cycles=max. Turning up the CPU with Ctrl-F12 will result in problems if it's too high. Frame skip? Just turn off animations in the game options, that'll fix the problem.
You gotta use the keyboard to explore with your magic spirits. Just clicking somewhere isn't optimal. Hit F2 to see the Cartographer screen and guess where the land should be. The outer four squares of the map won't have anything interesting, concentrate on the squares in the middle. I don't know how you've played the game so long never using the map.
Good job finally changing the music. It doesn't matter if it's soundblaster or midi, it gets old listening to the same theme over and over. Anyway, increased loading time shouldn't be an issue because you can do it offscreen!
For worst wizard, Charismatic in CoM is better because diplomacy is more alive and thus you have more chances to use the ability. It doesn't help when you sneak attack the computer's cities though! A single pop city on a giant mass of mountains? Let the CP have it, it's worthless. Once you've got war against a high-difficulty CoM wizard, they won't quit until you have more troops than them, and on higher difficulties they can produce a lot of troops. With flying and swimming it was like the oceans weren't even there. Pretty good actually, watching the CP send over flying and swimming units and floating islands full of troops.
