Star Wars: The Force Awakens

So, I watched TFA and I want to give my opinion.

About referencing scenes from the movie, I think the most memorable is the "that's not how the force works" one. I laughed at that one.

I liked the new characters, especially the villain. With the little time they had to show Kylo Ren's personality, I think they did a very good job. The whole "I want to be like Darth Vader, but I destroy a computer instead of killing the guy that let the prisoner escape" works, and a lot of the other nuances work too. I think the heroes could be good characters too, but they get so little time to develop on screen that I had to fill up much of their personalities and traits in my mind. That scene where Rey goes out into the woods because she doesn't want to be a hero is really terrible - they needed a bit more time to make that drama work, the way it was made ended up feeling stupid, because it happens all of a sudden and she decides to take a walk on the woods, of all things.

The starkiller (?) plot was very bad. The blowing up planets too. It served no purpose to the character's plot and it was very badly presented (it gave the feeling of "I had to read 1000 pages of expanded universe stuff to understand what's going on here) - the movie would be better without, while giving more time to the characters, IMO.

I hate the CGI characters. That lady with Luke's saber and the big bad guy are so bad. No empathy whatsoever, couldn't care any less about them.

Overall, I liked it a lot, and I'm not a star wars fan (more of a hater, really).

By the way, a friend of mine had the best idea ever. The last scene, the time when Luke turns to face Rey... It should have been Jar Jar Binks there. And he says: "Me Jedi now!". That would be the best fan-trolling since Harry Potter waking up of his dream to find himself under the stairs of his uncle's house again.

Interesting; I saw that more as a reflection of an attitude that droids are people rather than property. You do see her temptation later (maybe you hadn't got to that yet) though.

Finished. I'll focus on the positives:

- The villain! Not Voldemort, but the other one. Angry Solo. He'll be changing sides in Episode 9 of course smile
- Han Solo was great, and they even killed him off so no-one can ruin him.
- Best lightsaber fight in Star Wars as far as actual fighting goes. The original ones were too clumsy, and prequels too choreographed.
- That 2 second shot of the Ithorian hiding in the desert. I don't know what it was about it, but it made my day.
- Luke is back and hopefully he will be a main character from now on.
- That fighter pilot, Poe I think. He had a small role, but was more likable than Finn. Movie would have been better if him and Finn swapped places at the crash.

Yeah that's a good point. I first thought that she realized that the droid was worth much more when she saw how much the trader was willing to pay for it, and that's why she declined his offer, to get a better deal elsewhere. Anyway my theory was wrong and she just likes droids I guess, kinda weird for a scavenger.

When's the last time you heard anyone quote a line from TFA? Reference a scene? At least the execrable prequels had dorky terrible-lines worth chuckling over. "I love the water..." "I HATE SAND."

The "Traitor!" melee trooper was pretty popular in teh memes for a while. And "Emo Kylo Ren". And, on the snarkier side, the absurdity of Death Star 3.0's death laser being visible across time & space and the big bad guy taking the form of a 200 foot Gollum.

So I read back some comments you guys had about the movie. Did I imagine this, or didn't they hint at Rey having Jedi training? That would explain her force power and fighting prowess.

It all depends on what you want to read into the flashback.

I hadn'd realized it was set before ANH. That doesn't make reusing the same dumb superweapon any better. A new plot device would be nice. But i've learned not to expect much from jar jar Abrams.
