Scoollla seem to think that REM is still, not just a player, but ahead of them, but I haven't noticed much focus on him here in the lurker thread. Is that just because we haven't had a good look at what he's up to in a while?

Yeah, with less content there's less for us to pick on from the peanut gallery I do think the start has gone very well for him. He played a farmer's gambit and it's paid off for him, with 10+ cities and limited concern about neighborly aggression (except for the ominous Donovan road that Dreylin mentioned). It'll be interesting to see what his cities look like once he's had the chance to give us a big update. DESTROYERS are the most massive power jump in the game by a longshot and airships are very dangerous. FWIW, I still think Marines will be a bigger deal than Tanks on this map. Giant Sirian Fleet controls the seas -> move it to fork 4 or 5 cities at once -> blow up whichever one is most weakly defended -> repeat. He's not less defended than any other player (excluding Dreylin/OT4E).
Tanks could take Barrage in Warlords, but not in BTS as of 3.19. I agree that a combination of Marines and air bombardment will make defending coastal cities practically impossible on a map like this, and it doesn't even take Carriers if you have some forward Forts to shuffle Airships around. Tanks and artillery are scary too, but they still have to move through enemy culture and can be hit with ground-based collateral. If you don't have access to Destroyers and you're fighting someone who does, there are very few, if any, options on the table.

That's especially true if one of the Spiritual leaders gets the Pentagon (scooter+Sullla have the best shot). With Vassage+Theocracy+Pentagon they'd have Marines with City Raider III and transports with Navigation II. Pretty terrifying.
All this is interesting, but that's still a ways away. Cavalry now >>> super units later. I'll predict here that the first team to build 100 cavs is the winner.
