Did you try completely uninstalling the game (including deleting local content) and reinstalling? Or deleting and restoring the civ4 ini file?

Sorry all, but I got home much too late tonight to be able to play the turn coherently. Holiday here and all that. I know REM has to wait for me, but I'll try to get to it as soon as I can tomorrow after work.

Yup deleted local content for all 3 civ 4 files. Didn't do the ini though

I'm especially puzzled that it happens for you in SP mode. If you have a fairly recent graphics card, they often will let you toggle settings on a per-game basis. May be worth investigating that as well.

If you're able to get it resolved, I've completed my turn, so you're all set.

I know. I crashed out of 27 and since then this issue. Whatever I do in civ 4, but only civ4! Not even a complete uninstall reinstall fixed it.

Only other thing I have noticed is every time I load the game it forgets the previous PB address whereas before it used to save...

I can just about play but it makes it so long that it isn't much fun. I literally have no idea what to do.

That definitely sounds like something screwy with the ini file. The PB address is actually saved in the ini file, so it sounds like something is preventing the game from accessing it maybe? Maybe a security setting on your PC is messing with the game's access to that directory? Could potentially try running the game as administrator.

As for the file itself... Once you locate the ini file, there's a backup you of it you could always restore (.bak), or if you delete them both, the game should generate a fresh one at runtime. I think I'd recommend moving them somewhere else on your machine, then launching the game and see if it does generate a new one. That way you could restore both the ini and the backup if that fails.

But I didn't change or install anything. Literally crashed out of a game then poof. This. So where would the ini file be? Which folder of the game stuff? In the folder where the saves are stored?

Mine is in: C:\Users\username\Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword

Wherever yours is, it should be one level above where screenshots/saves are stored.

Yes sorted! I got rid of the ini file but that did nothing, it was the config settings file that deleting made it alright. But I can play again without crippling lag! Woo :P

Just to clarify, the "config settings" file is the ini file - it probably just had the file extension hidden. The ".ini.bak" file is the ini backup I was referring to. If you were to delete the normal ini file and then rename the ".ini.bak" file to remove the ".bak" it would appear to be the same.

Anyway, glad it's figured out. Something during the crash must have corrupted the file. Still very strange.

Completely bizarre. Even more so that uninstalling didn't fix
