So that means of the 12 people playing 5 are claiming that they didnt want to play as mafia.
A few people not wanting the role I would get, especially those who have played it a lot lately (hence my earlier question to Lewwyn), but 5/12 seems a high proportion to me

If you hide behind scum you have probably done a 1:1 trade which is ok, if you hide behind town they kill both the person you hide behind and you to get 2 kills in the single night.
Of course you would only announce your target at the last second before night ends so that scum can't change target. If you chose right (not behind nk-target) you either clear a villager or out a scum which is both very powerfull.
But all in all I can see why you would stay away from this role.
Additionally I have never really been good at staying around just before end of day/night to last hit. Hence even trying this I would probably end up having to call earlier than desirable

Oh, and I wanted to poke Gaz with my earlier vote to see how he would defend the doctor discard, I think his explanation is fine, and he certainly would have known the heat that the discard would get him should he discard it for Mafia.
Given that I think it makes sense to switch onto a mafia discard claim
I seem to remember reading something about Novice being scum a lot lately, mafia lover i could possibly see being annoying, so for now I would say that not having played scum for a while I would have chosen mafia goon over a plain vanilla townie, and I am surprised Lewwyn didnt too

This is a whole lot of WIFOM and projecting personal opinion. I just didn't want to play scum this game. I don't think that is to hard to understand. I'm sure Zak has likely gone out of his way not to choose scum this game.
Basically for me I had two village roles and one scum role to pick from. Either village role would be preferable to playing scum. Right now I have a lot of free time for maybe the next 5 days, but after that I'm going to be grading finals, working a summer camp and then I'm travelling for two weeks. I didn't really want to disappear on a scum team like that.
I also chose scum in the last greater mafia game so I wasn't hugely keen on gunning for that again. If this game is successful and we run some more of these choice games...

Don't be daft, I was expecting Gaz to come back with a reasonable defense to the first vote, and had already noticed a lot of scum being rejected, hence was trying to get my head straight on who was likely to be sick of it and who wasn't before putting a vote down.
Defending your reasoning as you did in the unquoted bit is fine, but revenge voting on a reasonable early day suspicion just seems a bit desperate.

Tell you what lets look at things a different way. Ignoring the people behind the choices, do you feel that a declared discard of mafia by 5 people from 12 was to be expected?
