And this turn it told me the wrong unit again.

Sounds like a bug. I think if there's any chance of this, we should replay the turns. Saves there being a significant problem down the line and many important turns to re-do.

I will hold off on playing for now.

Yeah but how do we know were the problem was ? Maybe the problem was 4 turns ago, or 10.

I can replay T117 and we'll see if that fixes the issue. Out of curiosity, what are the kinds of significant problems that can arise from this? I've never experienced any bugs of this sort before.

Anyone?

Maybe DaveV could be more precise as to what strange things would happen ?

Here's my theory, based on a fair amount of testing:

The initialization of the variables used by Civ are done differently when you load with the Ctrl-L shortcut, rather than exiting to the main menu and using the "load game" button from the main menu. Two of the things that don't seem to get initialized properly are the techs and civics for each player. What this means is that if you play your PBEM 1 turn, then load in your PBEM 5 turn with Ctrl-L, the techs and civics from game 1 can bleed into the game 5 save. This can cause things like auto upgrades to invalid units, unintended civic swaps to invalid civics, etc. If you play on, the builds and civics tend to revert to the allowed ones, which can cause anarchy or lost hammers.

I don't think saving in the middle of the turn is really the problem; the problem is how you load the save later.

TL;DR - never use Ctrl-L to load a PBEM game; always exit to the main menu and use the SINGLE PLAYER and LOAD GAME mouse buttons.

Replayed and sent. I made sure to get the order of combat exactly right, but some worker actions, unit movements, and tile assignments may be slightly different (stopped updating the micro spreadsheet a long time ago).
And I grit my teeth and repeated the stupid swap into Free Market. There could be a Greek hell where you have to keep replaying a turn, making the same dumb errors over and over again...)
Hope this helps.

Is that the same as using the quick menu to reload the same turn?

I reloaded the turn, without saving as I decided to change how I used a Great General, could that have caused it?

But I haven't played any other games, and, because of the current situation in the game (I'll say no more) I certainly didn't build any Temples, Buddhist or otherwise
PBEM12 - Shaka of Inca [6/6*] PBEM18 (Apps) - Augustus of China [4/4*] PBEM31 - Hannibal of Greece [jnt2-4/5*] PBEM72 - Willem of Oranje - Dutch [3/4*] PBEM74A -Catherine of Babylon [4/4][*ended early]

While we're on the subject, I've been opening the saves by double-clicking the attachments, which would start up Civ4, load the save, and then prompt me for my password. Is that kosher, or should I stick to having the game open and loading the save from the menu?

Yes. I always exit to main menu when I'm loading a game, which is why I forgot about the in-game menu option to load a save, and I recommend that habit (exiting to main menu) as a good practice that will keep you out of trouble. I think you can load a save from the same game without causing problems, but why take chances?

I've been doing that in every PBEM ever and have had no issue with it. I think that's fine.
