"You know we've got actual terrorists with bombs and who knows what out there trying to threaten the country. We don't need to be wasting our time with a bunch of weirdo goth punks. Isn't it time your team moved onto something more important?"

"Something more important...like a game of minesweeper, you mean?" Randy retorted sarcastically.

"Indeed, what a game. This can't be a coincidence. Hold on a sec..." After a minute of computery-typing stuff, the supervisor sat back in his chair dejectedly.

"What is it, sir?"

"Just as I thought. There was a code-splice into my minesweeper.exe. I was able to trace the IP address through several proxies, straight to Blackstar Estates. They wanted to send a message. I take my earlier words back: these are some serious dudes."

"What? Russian mafia? Jihadists?"

"There just no way of knowing until we get another undercover team in there to report back."

"But, sir, what makes you think that another team would fare any better than the last one?"

"I didn't know Dwarves had a word for a sex orgy masquerade ball..." the supervisor pondered.

"Yeah, and it's going to be next weekend. Any participant must simply dress in a Lord of the Rings masquerade outfit and speak the secret password at the entrance of the Blackstar Estates Ballroom to gain admission."

"This is our chance!" the supervisor exclaimed. "What's the password?"

"They have no shame. They would perpetrate another Waco on us if they thought they could get away with it. They'll send more agents, just you watch."

"Lord of the Masquerade"

This is a "Greater Idea Mafia" Werewolf game with an optional Lord of the Rings-themed masquerade component.

First, the "Greater Idea Mafia" setup:

Role Selection:

Players will be offered 3 roles that will be drawn in non-exclusive, true-random fashion (roles can duplicate). Players must rank the roles in order of preference from 1 to 3.
If players obtain their #1 pick, then their #3 pick will be displayed as their public discard, and the remaining card will be secretly discarded.
If players obtain their #2 pick, then they will get to choose which of their other cards to display as their public discard, and the remaining card will be secretly discarded.
If players obtain their #3 pick, then they have the option of choosing either of their other two cards as their public discard, or Vanilla Townie. The remaining card(s) will be secretly discarded.

For example: Player A gets a random draw of: Cult Doctor, Cult Inquisitor, FBI Doctor. Player A might reply back with:
1. Cult Inquisitor (FBI Doctor will be shown as discard)
2. Cult Doctor (show FBI Doctor discard).
3. FBI Doctor (show Vanilla Townie discard).

Bulletproof: You cannot be shot. 2-shot: Your bulletproofing only prevents two shooting attempts. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

Cult Hider - You are a Cult Hider. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Hider: During the Night, you may PM me the name of another player. You will "hide" behind that player, making you immune to any actions that target you. However, if you hide behind a non-Cult-aligned player, you will die. Cult Coward - You are a Cult Coward. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Coward: During the Night, you MUST PM me the name of another player. If you do not PM me the name of a player to hide behind, you will randomly be assigned one. Cult 1-Shot Eccentric Recluse - You are a Cult Eccentric Recluse. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. If you are the lynch choice, your bomb will do 1 shot of damage to all who voted for you (it will kill players without bulletproofing who voted for you, and privately deduct the bulletproofing armor of all others who voted for you by one). Passive Ability: If you are ever lynched, the number of FBI agents who contributed to your final lynch vote will be publicly revealed. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

Cult 1-Shot Bulletproof S&M Lover - You are Cult 1-Shot Bulletproof S&M Lover. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Bulletproof: You cannot be nightkilled. 1-Shot: The bulletproofing only protects against one attack. Lover: If there are other Lovers in the game, you will form a Lover bond with them. You will have a private QT forum with which to communicate with your lover(s) pre-game and during the Night. All Lovers will die at the same time. S&M: You will compulsively visit all other S&M players in the game each Night, and be seen as doing so by any trackers, watchers, stalkers, etc. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

Cult Stalker - You are a Cult Stalker. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Stalker: During the Night, you may PM me the name of another player. You will stalk that player for the rest of the game. Stalking the player informs you of any players your target visited each night, any players who visited your target, whether your target is a killer or not, and whether your target is aligned with FBI or not. If your stalking target ever dies, you commit suicide. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

Cult 1-Shot Paranoid Gun Owner - You are a Cult 1-Shot Paranoid Gun Owner. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Paranoid Gun Owner: Every player that targets you will die. 1-Shot: This role will only activate the first Night you are targeted. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

Cult Paranoid Bodyguard - You are a Cult Paranoid Bodyguard. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Paranoid Bodyguard: During the Night, you may PM me the name of a player to protect. Every player that targets that protected player that night will be shot. Note that you cannot use this on yourself. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

Cult Chloroformer (roleblocker) - You are a Cult Chloroformer. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Chloroformer: During the Night, you may PM me the name of another player. This player will be unable to use his/her ability that night (if he/she has one). Cult Dungeonmaster (jailkeeper) - You are a Cult Dungeonmaster. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Dungeonmaster: During the Night, you may PM me the name of another player. This player will be unable to use his/her ability for that night (if he/she has one). This player will also be immune to nightkills for that Night. Cult 1-Shot Gladiator - You are a Cult 1-Shot Gladiator. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Gladiator: During the first half of a lynch day (the first 24 hours of a typical 48-hour lynch period), you may publicly challenge another player. All lynch votes will be reset, and only votes for you and your target will count for that day's lynch. 1-Shot: You can only use this ability once in a game. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

Cult Hypnotist - You are a Cult Hypnotist. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Hypnotist: During the Night, you may PM me the name of another player. You will hypnotize that player and any other player (aside from yourself) who visits that player in the night. "Hypnotized" means that the next day, until lynch, the affected player(s) will have a posting restriction placed upon them by the Mod. The exact nature of the posting restriction will be predetermined by the Mod before the start of the game and will be influenced by the flavor of the player's masquerade name. The posting restriction will not affect voting or quoting other players. Players are guaranteed to have at least some limited ability to express their own thoughts (no complete silence enforced), albeit in what form and with what difficulty they will be able to express themselves will be determined by the Mod. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

Vengeful Cultie - You are a Vengeful Cultie. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Vengeful: If you are lynched, you may choose to stab one player immediately by posting in-thread Kill: PLAYERNAME. If you do not want to kill anyone, please post Kill: No one. Alternatively, if you can't be online for the lynch, you may PM me with previous instructions to be executed in case you are lynched. Note that this kill will bypass bodyguards, bulletproofing, etc. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

FBI 1-Shot Action Hero (Gladiator) - You are a FBI 1-Shot Action Hero. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Gladiator: During the first half of a lynch day (the first 24 hours of a typical 48-hour lynch period), you may publicly challenge another player. All lynch votes will be reset, and only votes for you or your target will count for that day's lynch. 1-Shot: You can only use this ability once in a game. Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Cult are eliminated and at least one Cult-aligned player is still alive, or nothing can prevent the same.

FBI Hypnotist - You are a FBI Hypnotist. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Hypnotist: During the Night, you may PM me the name of another player. You will hypotize that player and any other player who visits that player in the night. "Hypnotized" means that the next day until lynch the affected player(s) will have a posting restriction placed upon them by the Mod. The exact nature of the posting restriction will be predetermined before the start of the game by the Mod and will be influenced by the flavor of the player's masquerade name. The posting restriction will not affect voting or quoting other players. Players are guaranteed to have at least some limited ability to express their own thoughts (no complete silence), albeit in what form and with what difficulty they will be able to do so will be pre-determined by the Mod. If you are the one to be lynched that day, then the lynch will fail (although your identity will still be revealed), and all players who voted for you plus yourself will be unable to take part in any night actions that night. 1-Shot: You can only activate the Honeypot ability once per game. Factional Kill: The FBI may kill one player per Night. Factional Communication: If there are other FBI-aligned players, there will be a FBI QT that can be used pre-game and during the Night. If that player has already committed a felony in the game (murder, wrongful imprisonment (jailkeeping), or assault (roleblocking, attempted murder)), and assuming that the player has not been brainwashed, then that player will become an FBI Informant. If any of these conditions is not met, then the targeted player will be informed of your alignment, role, and attempt to interrogate them. Factional Kill: The FBI may kill one player per Night. Factional Communication: If there are other FBI-aligned players, there will be a FBI QT that can be used pre-game and during the Night. 2-Shot Bulletproof Serial Killer - You are a 2-Shot Bulletproof Serial Killer. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Factional Kill: You may kill one player each Night. Bulletproof: You cannot be nightkilled. 2-Shot: This will only apply the first two times you are nightkilled. You will not be told when these are used. Win Condition: You win when all other players are eliminated or nothing can prevent the same.

KGB Assassin - You are a KGB Assassin. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Factional Kill: You may kill one player each Night. Bulletproof: You cannot be nightkilled. 1-Shot: This will only apply the first time you are nightkilled. You will not be told when this was used. FBI Mole: You will have access to the FBI QT thread and will be able to post in that forum. You do NOT share in the FBI factional nightkill (so that any other player in the FBI QT forum can always overrule you with a decision about a night action), but you can, of course, choose to imitate the FBI factional nightkill with your own factional nightkill if the FBI team chooses to delegate the nightkill to you. Win Condition: You win when all other players are eliminated or nothing can prevent the same.


Tom Cruise - You are Tom Cruise, a Wrong-Place-at-the-Wrong-Time Tourist Survivor. Abilities: During the Day, you may vote for whomever you want lynched. Wrong Place at the Wrong Time: If you your alignment is investigated, you will appear to be aligned with the FBI ("GUILTY"). Tourist: During each Night, you must PM me of a player to visit on that night. No action will result from your visit, other than other players being able to detect your visit. If you do not choose a player to visit, one will be randomly assigned to you. Win condition: Remain alive after at least half of the other players have died, and you will be able to escape this batshit crazy cult and get home to your wife and kid.

Also, fyi, I am available to moderate a game using this setup any time between now and about August 20th when the fall semester starts up again. After that, I still might be able to do it, but it's likely that I'd have to mandate some unorthodox deadline hours to work around my teaching (such as 0700 CDT).
