Windows 10 vs Windows 7

I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

As a side note, win10 is already in stores and it appears to be 143$ for the home version and 185$ for Pro.

I can second Win 10 booting up more quickly than 7. Not sure I would try to upgrade with an illegal copy of 7 though, seems like a good way to get it detected and lose both.

You should just treat the windows upgrades like major version upgrades of IOS and OSX etc. That's what they are going for when I left Microsoft.

Reasons to not upgrade to 10:

* It's annoying to have to deal with change.
* Sometimes old programs work less well on new systems.

Non-reasons to not upgrade to 10:

* They're gathering data on me! (You can turn that off. Also, Windows 7 has that too.)
* Free? They must be up to something! (Yeah, they're competing with other OSes that are also free and they're tired of supporting a million different versions.)

Reasons to upgrade:

* As far as I can tell, they keep improving Windows. Even its performance.
* You can expect Windows 7 to become less supported over time.
You can't turn all of the gathering off though, and Windows 7 didn't do nearly as much of it.

What they're "up to" is forcing the stupid App Store on everybody, along with trying to force unity among versions (even though that isn't going to happen).

Honestly, the main reason I haven't upgraded yet (other than the worry about putting my computer out of commission for a while) is that they aren't letting you delay updates anymore--I like to have at least some idea about what's changing on my system.

@CH - I agree on the info gathering and the auto-updates, but I've never felt the slightest need to use or push towards the app store. To me the most important distinction between a full desktop OS and a mobile OS is the ability to install programs from sources of my choosing and outside a walled garden (yes file system access and more customized settings are also important) and I don't feel as though Windows 10 is meaningfully cutting into that feature.

You start it off from Windows Update and it does its thing. I think it also keeps the old OS so you can convert back to it. There's also a way to clean install W10 if that's what you want to do. Should be easy to find the instructions with a Google search.

The win7 i have right now is a pirated one for which i disabled both the automatic update and the activation. can i move to win10 without any issues or do i need to wipe win7 first?

I would go with the Pro version, better overall performance and with things like Virtual Boxes...

Why you should?? Because you are currently running a buggy, expoit inviting box that might even be someone's Bot slave... do you even have a service pack installed???

What kind of machine do you have?? Might be good to go and max out your RAM and possibly get a hybrid HDD and your machine will be smokin'... and ready for the next decade....

i upgraded shortly after my last post. It's mostly ok.
-The new IE annoys me because it's default and keep opening whenever i click a link in LoL or whatever instead of operning it in Chrome
-The startmenu doesn't respond half the time but i understand it's a known problem with a fix. Haven't gotten around to enforce it yet...(and i got a way around it so it's no rush)
-I've installed the spybot and keep it active (at least i think it's active as it doesn't have a background icon in my taskbar)
-Entertained Cortana for a while but it's not really useful so i disabled it.
-I also seem to have an issue with keeping the wallpaper in place as it sometimes is replaced with a flatout black one for no reason

You can set Chrome as your default browser in the settings. It's something like All Settings -> System -> Default Programs -> Browser (might not be direct translations).

That's what happens when windows detects you're using a pirated/non-authenticated version.
