REM simply doesn't have enough attacks to kill all the defending units. Yes, I know tanks have Blitz promotion, but each attack costs a movement point, and his tanks will need to use 1 of their 2 movement to reach the city, leaving only one point left over for attacking. (Lurkers, feel free to post and tell me if I have the mechanic wrong here. Pretty sure this is how it works though.)

With the correct amount of rails/roads, they will only use some fraction of a move point to get adjacent to the city. If they have anything over 1 move, they can attack twice.
Or to rephrase, any combination of roads/rails where a single move unit would get to attack, a tank gets two attacks.

That's true, but as I learned the hard way in single player, Can attack twice does not mean should. against well promoted infantry attacking into a city with cultural defenses, even a victory almost certainly leaves the tank with too little HP to take on another fully healed infantry.

Now, if he's somehow already gotten enough bombers to remove cultural defences and weaken all units so that the tanks only have mopup duty, then it's likely GG no matter what happens next.

REM spent about a half hour on the turn. Curiosity got the best of me, so I jumped in to take a quick look.

Guessing he's gonna do some sims and then decide tomorrow whether to attack.

The villager loss was up by Zipper. He captured, deleted, retreated. Minor brain short-circuit on my part there to make that possible. Or rather, what little brain power exists was all expended on other bigger things. smile

REM logged in yesterday but didn't finish the turn, but also didn't pause it for himself. Lucky for him pindicator jumped in with 15 mins left to pause otherwise we'd be looking at a reload.

I felt bad for taking an unusually long time this past turn (on a turn where I was being actively attacked and needed to figure out a defense) when I used up ~30 hours on the turn timer. It's been 54 hours since then, still no turn played from REM. I'm really starting to question if it's worth continuing this game if the guy winning can't be bothered to play his turn within 2 days.

To put it in perspective.

Sounds like a faster version of PB 30

He said in the tech thread he's been working all weekend, so while it's annoying, no one can fault him for putting real life over a game. Hopefully it picks up again shortly. This game has been go on for months and it's a bit of a stretch to imagine every player is going to have free time every single day, especially REM on a one-man team.

I don't mean to sound like I'm going off, just pointing out that it's easy for us to read up on the threads every couple days, it's an entirely different matter to dedicate substantial time to playing civ every day for months on end.

I didn't know slower was possible. My condolences to all involved.

To be frank, if you don't have the time to log in once per day, you shouldn't be signing up for a game (let alone 3 at once). I totally understand busy stretches, but the last time one hit me unexpectedly I handed over my game and took a lengthy break from civ.

I'm hoping it does clear up soon. When the turns happen, I really enjoy this game. REM is really good and playing very well, and I like the challenge. Premature ending over pace OR a replacement would both suck.

I understand the frustration. I would never, ever sign up for a game on this site because it's just not at all realistic for anyone other than a college student to be able to dedicate time every day to a video game, especially REM who I think is a working parent from his posts. He almost quit the game once before. His biggest mistake may be in not having a teammate, like Sulla who can fill in for you on a limited basis.

Months long commitments to video games are kind of crazy. It's amazing as a lurker, I'm sure it's often painful as a player.

Whatever happens, a huge lurker population has enjoyed the show and hopefully the players have too.
