I could have sworn Venetian needs harbor too.

Why are naturalists 1600 instead of 800 ??

Better idea, actually: build Oxford in Rice Bowl after chopping the forest there into the power plant.  You already have a worker there.  You can also chop/mine the tundra hill to the south.

You're totally right. Good spot.

I have not a clue.

Venetian doesn't need harbor. I find this cheat sheet helpful:

Some thoughts on seaside resort spamming:

Red dots are seaside resorts. Green dots are newly planted forests. With Christo + computers, each one of those red dots is 32 tourism!

The West

The East

If I've done the math correctly, that's 32 * 13 = 416 tourism for 20 worker chargers. I do think seaside resorts are pretty powerful in this game.

Apparently (based on sullla's adventure report), seaside resorts are also flatland-only, unfortunately. (This is worth confirming, however.) I wish we'd spotted that ages ago.

The ones over by Red Herring, Candy Mountain, and Caffeinated should be good, though. I have no idea if you can forest a desert; will be interesting to find out! (oh, but that one is out of range of Caffeinated; you can't even buy your way onto that land for border expansion.)

No seaside resorts on hills? frown Very sad. That cuts us down to 6-7 of 'em.

I wonder if there's an island or two in the middle of that sea for resorting. I remember seeing an island to the East of the American/Rome/most people's start in Adv1 that had something like 6-7 tiles which were all seaside resortable post Eiffel (or with forests.)

Before we do anything, I take a gander at the diplo screens.

I sell off a mercury to Vicky and sign her back up to an alliance.

Pedro…. huh… Pedro is willing to give us ALL 6 of his great works in exchange for a city.

On the one hand, 100 tourism .

On the other hand, MY city.

Which ones will he take?

So the obvious one is Red Herring - which he will indeed take - but that’s a chocolate land city. Never. Not gonna trade away a core city. Will he take a shitty Eastern city? He’ll take TUNA, but he’ll only give us 5 great works for that. Or he’ll take Caffeinated, and give us 6 great works, AND a bunch of money so that we can turn around and buy Tomyris’s great work AND and fur.

Caffeinated is making 0 tourism/turn. On the other hand, Caffeinated will make an archeology museum in 3 turns, and then an archeologist in about 10, which will probably have it filled in 5-6 turns. Say 20ish turns until it produces 27 tourism. In return for 100 tourism straight away.

Can we steal them? We have unpromoted spies at 7 turns of production, which have… a 27% of success. If we take 8 turns to gather sources and use the spy civic, that goes up to 64%.

Logically, I think, the correct thing to do is to make the trade. Unless I’m missing something and I’m about to throw away a city for nothing. Emotionally, I don’t wanna. Argh. What to do.

You know what. I’m gonna do it. We can just declare war and take it back anyway if we feel badly about it. Good night sweet prince.  cry

T181
We hit 672 tourism per turn. That’s a 20% increase in one turn. Sullla got us 376 tourism on his turnset. Can I break his record? We shall see.

I notice that Gandhi is now happy with us for keeping the peace. Happy enough for us to declare friendship! Which in turn, pushes his happiness with us up enough for me to swing him an alliance. Sweet.

For the first time all game, nobody hates us. Nice.

T182
Balls. I just worked out how we could have wrangled those great works from Pedro. You can trade out archeologist’s great works for artifacts. You can do this with museums that are not yet full. It looks like you can just keep selling artifacts as your archaeologist runs around. I traded away one of rice bowl's artifacts for *yet* another great work of writing, grabbed another one (so rice bowl still has two artifacts) and the archaeologist is still around.

Tourism hits 698/turn.

T183
I have chocolate river start Ruhr. This isn’t a bad deal - it would be best if Need Food Pls built it - but Need Food Pls needs to finish Hermitage, and then build a power plant for our core. By that time it would be too late. With chops, Chocolate River will have it done in 19 turns, which will hopefully be just enough to bring it’s tourism online.

Besides, with 7 mines/quarries Chocolate river isn’t exactly a slouch.

Tourism hits 714/turn.

T184
60/161 tourists. Nearly 40% of the way there. Tourist numbers are rising quickly - each civ had sent us 11 tourists T182, and now its 12.

I/T 184
Saladin and Tomyris are throwing it down.

T185
We snap up Goddard. Goddard triggers the Eureka for Rocketry, and gives 20% towards Space Race projects, which is…absolutely useless. I leave him hanging around in case someone else works out something to do with him.

We gain another 8 tourists, bringing us up to 68.

T186
We build Hermitage, and hit the information era. Social Media/online communities/collective action come in, and we get a hilarious amount of culture. (711/turn!)

We shoot for suffrage next so we can actually run both uber late game diplomatic civics. BTW, since Kandy has Brazil as its suzerain, we could have run containment and got double envoys. This is why you hold on to your envoys if you don’t need them - so you can cash them out late game for double value and swipe the AIs city state for the two diplomatic policies.

I have no clue what to build in our capital. The only thing we can really build is Cristo, and I don’t want to build that because this game will not still be running in 22 turns. After a little thought, I drop a entertainment complex, because why not, right?

T187
I’m dumb. Since we need the TRs, we won’t be changing out of Merchant Republic ever. Duh. I swap over towards getting the second uber diplomatic policy.

Bolshoi hits, and grabs class struggle and nuclear program. More end game governments that we’ll never use.  crazyeye

The Polar Bear Enlightenment project begins! And OMG a goody hut! This is one of my favorite moments of civ, ever.

T188
I would like to call attention to the fact that in *one* turn, the polar bear enlightenment project built an cultural district and is now 1 turn away from an amphitheater. ALL PHEAR the almighty late game Japanese forest chop.

Pedro is willing to give us 480 gold for a mercury resource. This is why it’s important to befriend the AI!

T189
The borders of Polar Bear Enlightenment Project expand and pop a goody hut and …uh…

I’m SURE that those weren’t boosted before. Also, it finishes its archaeology museum. It is now turn *two*. BEST. CITY. EVERjive

T190
The Polar Bear Enlightenment Project is 1 chop away from finishing it’s archaeologist and it is joined by the Polar Bear Institute of Design. I move some of our great works of writing down there to begin educating the indigenous fauna. Our chopping workers can hop over there next and help out. I bought tiles aggressively for chopping purposes - what else are we going to spend money on?

Sadly, I didn't beat Sullla.  cry  It wasn't even close really - I barely got within 100. Bah.

Finally, the metric tons of workers up north were for foresting/seaside resorting purposes. Sadly, it doesn’t look like we’re going to get to radio - we’ve hit 100/158 tourists. (Notice how thanks to our insane cultural output the number of tourists we need to get to win has actually gone down on my turn set.) This game’s gonna be over soon.

Thanks for inviting me along the ride guys. I had a blast. Ruined Everything signing off.  cool

Fun read!

Hilarious names for the tundra cities. Yay to Firaxis for allowing long city names I guess - looks longer than civ4.

I got it.

I might train some troops. Since it appears we can.... devil devil devil

IT: Archaeologist from Rice Bowl digs up a shipwreck, completing & theming his home museum.
[Image: FED7FE9D35064DC075D40E497B0893EEF3646F74]Brazil nabs Mark Twain. nono . I spose it was inevitable after we got the last 30 writers, but tings anyway.

T 191:
Decide to build an entertainment district in candy mountain, to up the appeal of some coastal tiles. Seaside resorts in 8 turns. Also start some theater festivals to gain more great persons - we got use for writers and artists still. Move to forest in Polar bear enlightenment project, buy a tile there, chop archaeologist next turn. Second builder moves to other polar city.

T 192:
We allow a British embassy. We also get an eureka for robotics.
Truffle dream archaeologist finds a yerevan shipwreck for 2nd artifact.
[Image: E64C1EF4C059969C92C9413497FDA03C5ACADC0B]
England declares on Tomyris. Next turn we are told that "England no longer seeks a science victory".

T 193:
Brazil is apparently building Christo redentor and Oxford now.
Truffle dream finally finds an English artifact, completing & theming its museum. Good work bud.

Archaeologist from Polar bear is chopped, heads north to find artifacts.
I swap some policies - away with wonder build one, put in settler quick and science rate one. Leave all tourism ones in, of course. Also start science project in capital. We want Radios now!

T 194:
The race is on!

Will we manage some seaside resorts before we win?

I think yes. Entertainment district finishes, bumping 2 seaside tiles to breathtaking. So it appears they need to be finished before counting. Obvious, but one can't be sure. If one is me. The sceptic.

Here is the north coast, with appeal lens. If we were hurting for tourism, some quick cities plopped down here would have given a bit.
[Image: 85A18127332E2DABDBA8813187C54DC0BE6BD898]

T 195:
Claim Leo Tolstoy. He goes to truffle dream and writes about war and peace. No idea what this "war" thing he rambles about is, but peace is a familiar concept for our hippy Japanese civ.

T 196:
Culture victory creeping nearer.
[Image: 165FEC050A722131346AAE1D57CD4B542D4D88C2]
It will all be over next turn. We get our last great artist. She moves towards le hermitage, but arrives next turn. Leo Tolstoy writes some more.

However, more important than imminent victory: bestest city in the world, Polar bear enlightenment project, digs up an ancient razilian necklace from the sea, prodly displaying it for Bear and Man to see:
[Image: 3AC1E60E1648AAFC6D02E7C0A54547F010A193FF]

T 197:
Seaside resort! We got it.
[Image: 8ADD30E085D81A4743B569A8D2B26438F69FC095]
and look at all those Englishmen flocking to our nice warm southern beaches! Just like real life...

Trade route finished, here is an interesting picture - with ally status and a good civic, foreign trade is a lot better than domestic yikes . There were a few other civic we could have added for even more oomph.
[Image: BA30A5B89642C84231F51B1A70577F5462723BAC]

Also in that picture is a settler and builder sailing towards the northern continent, to enact operation "North Pole Seaside Resort Consortium". That is how far they got, because...

...looks like we win EOT
[Image: 45BF6DFA92290DD877D5436EBE7A39BC808AC28D]

EOT:
Yup.
[Image: D1459ABC8F14EE08D4DE6022B83B34DD1ADE7345]
Tourism really took off towards the end there.

But seriously &%¤%& what is up with that score? This was emperor, a pretty quick finish - but we did not just spam army and go kill, we built our cities, built districts, wonders. And got tourists.

So why are we ranked alongside "worst president in the US" (traditional view anyway), below Nero and (urgh) Chamberlain, the French king who lost his nation and head, and....yeah. I guess we played a terrible game. I don't care much about score ranking, but I think some people might...what are they gonna think? Is this some clever ruse to get people to play more so they can improve score? If so, they need to reserve these historically notorious names for truly bad games, like where you loose. They needed more "middle" names...Elanor, Charles (controversial but a strong leader, one might say), good ole Hatty and Lech are maybe the middle ones, then the great reside above.

Hm, for someone who doesn't care about rankings I sure wrote a lot about rankings. Well. Maybe I do care. Warren G. my #$$

Anyway, next post with 136 pictures of end-of-game graphs for analysis and discussion.

Thanks Sullla for starting this, thanks team for great play, even though the game thinks otherwise... And thanks lurkers for commenting, and, you know, lurking.

Bonus info not in my last post: Didn't manage to chop much down south, had barb problems. I _lost_ our hi-tech crossbowman unit and a builder got captured. There was also a barb musketman incoming, so I would have had to invest in military to keep our south safe. From pillaging, at least - cities could defend themselves even without walls because of some tech.
