Will RB get credit to fill up Civ7's credits now?
It makes sense why they would go downhill from the changing of the Internet but what killed them off is different: The "Pandapocalypse" split the WePlayCiv and Apolyton communities. CivPlayers died from Firaxis ditching duels/teamers and only caring about FFA if they even care about MP at all; making No Quitters the rightful successor. (I need to point out prophylactically that Civ4 is actually very unimpressive here because the designer only liked teamers and duels because they hide the fact that their could only be one winner.)

"Pandapocalypse"
What was that?
Travelling on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

Asher caused Dale (yes that Dale and he was a mod at that time) to freak out and abuse his position by sending pictures of Pandas to him. Now Asher should have been banned earlier, and it's pretty obvious that this was meant as an intentional straw that broke the camel's back, but it wasn't acceptable for Dale to lose his cool like that. Dale got rightfully banned and this incident inspired someone called Seeker to make WPC to get away from people like Asher (he should have stayed and waited for Asher to inevitably get banned).
Edit: Two silly things not worth own post.
1. It was started initially by Asher attacking Dale by attacking his mod of Civ4:Con.
2. In case you still don't get it this caused the site to get nuked by having half the members quit to WPC; an apocalypse. It involved pandas so "Pandapocalypse".

This is one of the weirdest things I've heard. Like, what? Are capital P pandas special in some way? How is sending them an abuse of power?

They were just random pictures of pandas. The fact that it caused Apolyton to fall makes it an event big enough to justify a capital P.
Asher was the one to send pandas. As I said before this was just the straw that broke the camel's back. It looks very silly if you don't know what was going on but it makes perfect sense if you do like the war of the bucket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeLxPfl6kaM.
Dale retaliated by deleting all of Asher's posts (including the ones that had pandas. This is actually probably the real reason why it's called Pandapocalypse because Dale purged them from existence by deleting them.)

To be super clear to you Seven, Asher had a great sense of when someone was about to break. So he attacked Dale indirectly until he was at that stage and then pushed him over the edge with something silly to make him look bad. Asher also probably made comments like "How is this harassment?" to piss off Dale too (this is like the stolen loot in the War of the Bucket).
The reason I remember this ten years (!!!) later is because this proved to me you have to guess what people want otherwise you cannot protect yourself.

In a strange, bizarro world sort of way, I have to agree. I read that, and was just thinking "It was destroyed by pictures of pandas? LOLWUT?)
Every time I start thinking I sort of understand this internet thing, something like this comes along.

Close but not quite.
Asher accused Dale of sending pictures of Dale having sex with a panda to Asher via PM (which wasn't actually possible). Then Dale freaked out on Asher and uttered death threats.
Pandagate was one of the absolute funniest pieces of internet forum drama I have ever seen.
