Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I know I said I won't pay to see another Star Wars on the big screen after The Force Awakens, but a RBer convinced me to give it one last try. I have to echo what Tyrmith said, I like it better than any other in the series. It does wonders when a movie doesn't try to be cute for 4 year old kids. Too bad they started killing off people just as I started to care, but that's a good thing too being less predictable. I like watching SciFi and Fantasy on the big screen. I don't necessary care about the story as long as it has good visuals. It is a 3/5 for me.

It even got me watching EP. 4-6 again, but stopped one third into EP. 6 because those Ewoks were just too cute.

Just saw Rogue One; thoroughly enjoyed it, particularly the second two-thirds where it dropped the family drama and fully settled into being a gritty science fiction war movie. Some of the beach fighting gave me XCOM 2 flashbacks, what with all the convenient waist-high cover scattered about. I do wish they had given at least a couple characters American accents though, I had trouble understanding some of them, particularly Jin's scruffy Rebel counterpart and Forest Whitaker (I have no idea what he was going for with his performance).

Its basically Battle for LA but with a Starwars coat of paint. If you want a sci-fi war movie that has light characterization and mostly stock characters or professional soldiers, I would check out Battle for LA too.

Honestly I wasn't too impressed with the film. I offended that they didn't have the traditional golden text crawl at the beginning, like they've done for every star wars film in the last 40+ years. Also, this is the first time they didn't use John Williams to compose an orchestral score to go along with the movie. Personally, I liked The Force Awakens because they tried to give the audience meaningful character development with the intention of spanning several films. With this film, the characters seem like faceless cannon fodder. Plus, there was a severe lack of lightsabers, although they really portrayed the sense of power Mr. Vader was able to command. All in all, I don't think the movie was worth the price of admission.

It's an entirely different genre of film -- it's a war film, not a hero's journey. One should expect different tropes to apply.
