The First Civ6 Lurker Thread

Agreed. 4 Legions + 1 Horseman can only crush someone if they are militarily backward. 2 legions and archers in city walls will be able to stall out Sullla. This is also compounded by the lack of medic promotions in Civ 6, only promotions can instant heal the units. I was a little surprised Sullla only brought 4 legions instead of 6 but I suppose he only has that much money.

But I don't think TheArchduke is going in for a prolonged game of stalling Sullla... he's already given up. In this regard Sullla has made the correct "metagaming" play.

If you play such an MP game with Sulla, you better be prepared. Archduke had given when Sulla settled a little more aggressive. Buying a mountain tile out of panic compounded by his constant whining how he has got no chance is not gonna cut it.

I am looking forward to a more competitive MP game to lurk. We all can learn quite a bit here how to play and how not to play such a game.

So Archduke bought a warrior with his cash reserve, when he would have legions within 2-3 turns, and could have upgraded his present warriors instead? I'd say Archduke is in panic mode right now, and that lessens his chances even further against Sullla.

Especially if Sullla split his forces to take Cumae, then two legions between Mediolanum and Stockholm would cause Sullla no end of trouble, but now the cash reserve went to a warrior that will simply die without accomplishing anything.

ETA: teh seems to consider attacking Yuris if Yuris tries to grab something from Archduke, instead of trying to slow down Sullla. I guess if he does so, he's clearly playing for #2 instead of #1 in this game.
Furthermore, I consider that forum views should be fluid in width

Yea that was a WTF moment for me too. AFAIK 110g upgrades warrior --> legion right? Whereas warriors are purchased for 160g.

With 2 produced legions + 1 upgraded, and a few archers on hand, maybe Rome would be lost in a day, but the Roman empire wouldn't. frown

WRT teh, he probably doesn't know just how screwed TheArchduke is at the moment - he's hoping that Sullla will be busy devouring TheArchduke while he is able to grab something from yuris. That's understandable. If Sullla tried a land invasion and TheArchduke was able to keep a few archers in his border cities while quickly producing legions in his capitol, it's quite possible that Sullla would take a while.

Settling on coast, buying a mountain tile, rush buying a warrior....what else will we see? frontal attack of archers versus legions?
If he would have played a little smarter, he could have built a few cheap warriors and upgraded them too, this would be a strong deterrent.

Interestingly, Yuris might try and capture maybe 1-2 of Archduke's cities. If teh would go after Sulla at the same time, we would have a contest. If Yuris and teh fight each other, that is it....

I hope it's okay for me to tell TheArchduke that legions don't require iron? Seems like he's screwed regardless.

If his "2-3 turn delay" is because he can't connect iron, that would be an epic fail... I don't want to be too harsh in a place where TheArchduke can't respond, but that was quite careless.

I can't wait to gloat about your mistakes when you play your first mp game.

@Old Harry, I wouldn't want to play against Sulla in a MP game as he would cruelly expose my deficiencies when it comes to strategy and micromanagement.
However, I would have thought that a little more care and research could have prevented such panic moves or crucial stuff like knowing the strength/features of your UU.

Seriously, I feel like a lot of the criticism is way over the top. Replace Sullla with a "normal" player who e.g. doesn't roll a dozen maps to find out what to expect from this mapscript in advance, and who chooses Any Other Civ after TheArchduke took Rome so there's no super-mirror for comparison, and Northern Rome would be doing okay here.

Also, don't excoriate a player for missing something just because it seems obvious to you - least of all when you haven't thought his situation through yourself. TheArchduke may not need iron to upgrade Warriors to Legions, but he does need an iron mine to complete the tech!
