The First Civ6 Lurker Thread

I've thought about this and after sullla took out archduke like that the DoWing was his only move (and Yuri's too after he gets units in position).

T-hawk, unlike Civ4&5, in Civ6 the defender doesn't have an insane advantage. They got rid of the 2x move bonus and you can get around walls by adding a single battering ram. You have to build a real military to defend yourself so all you have to do is DoW and shove your units in. Not very hard.

teh should have built a battering ram in case this happened as soon as the encampment was built but he's 10x better than Yuri and Archduke and would be fine if he didn't have to carry the weight against sullla so ho-hum.

There was one successful dogpile no-diplo civ4 game but that gamer was really asking for it. That's not impressive at all with so many games.

With diplo dogpile is easy because you can trade screenshots so people cannot back out of contributing. Things tend to get personal so it's easy to get people on your side when you shouldn't be able to (For example, in the final ISDG ever, CFC tricking CivFr into signing peace with them and making the German team vassalize to them for no reason).

I didn't realize your city garrisons upgraded to the current strength of your best melee unit. With that in mind, and taking a look at the troops around Aquila, its sobering to realize just how close Archduke was to being able to mount a credible defense against this attack. I doubt he could have held Rome/Constantinople against the initial surprise assault, but moving past that would have been difficult if Cumae and Lugdunum had had 30 str. garrisons each and a couple legions in the area.

As things stand, I think Archduke can actually linger on and be a major pain in the ass for awhile, since he has no motivation to cede cities to Sullla. With this in mind, I hope Yuris attacks Stockholm instead of Arpinum, if nothing else to keep Archduke's morale above rock bottom.

I feel safe saying Yuris is not attacking teh at this point, so good on him for that.

Kudos to teh for acting appropriately, and so far waging an effective war with the forces he has. Pillaging/annoying/whittling on the walls is about the best he can hope for at this point, but it's substantially better than nothing. My only revision might have been queuing up another warrior/battering ram immediately, to make taking the city more of a possibility. But, given how strong Hansas are, I don't think I can really fault him for wanting to get them all out.

With his production edge, he could pose a credible threat to Sullla and we could get a really entertaining classical/medieval war out of this.

Anyway, I still give 90% odds to Sullla to win, but big props to teh for acting in such a manner that keeps the game somewhat in play and interesting. The big questions now are:

1. What does Yuris do?
2. How long can Archduke hold out?
3. How soon can teh Assemble enough forces to pose a credible threat to Sullla?

In pb18 krill, pindicator and fintourist & I dogpiled the leader - dtay - successfully. In pb31 from what I thought was second place I failed to provoke a dogpile on mackoti and tbs leapfrogged us both while we were distracted to win the game.

Yuris' choice here is interesting - attack teh hoping for second place, attack archduke hoping to make gains while the others squabble (most likely to help Sullla) or attack Stockholm and join the dogpile. It's obvious what the lurker crowd (and I) wants, but given how teh settled, cutting him off from the others he may have more of an axe to grind with him.

What do you play for when you think you can't win? I usually figure out who I blame most for my failure and take it out on them...

Typically if I think I can't win I play to have the shortest turns possible while still being a good sport, so that I limit the amount of free time I'm committing to a lost cause. So in this case, I wouldn't attack anyone. Perhaps Yuris won't either.

If I'm yuris, I don't want to help Sullla (by taking down teh/Archduke quickly) but I don't want to prop up teh who has the best rewards if Sullla is destroyed, so I either a) build up my economy or b) take down Stockholm which hurts Sullla, while expanding my lands in a way that does not require too much of an investment.

teh's ~100g gift to TheArchduke was probably the best way he could block Sullla from winning quickly, well done!

EDIT: yuris invaded teh - I can't say I'm too happy with the situation, but I think it makes sense as well - this is the best way for yuris to get ahead, also noting that the city is really lightly defended. I'm sure he will get a lot of flak from lurkers, who all want there to be an epic clash between teh/yuris and Sullla, but we should remember that yuris doesn't have the perspective we have.

Big question is, how does teh respond?

I'm pretty sure Sullla is going to win as a result.

absolutely great....thanks for handing the game to Sulla....

PS if you guys are telling me this is how MP games usually play out, then I say, thanks but no thanks...I usually root for the underdog, but if underdogs play just into the hands of a gloating winner...i wouldn't want any part in it

To add to my previous post:

Teh will now pull back his archers and certainly fend off Yuris (maybe retake Frankfurt after an initial loss of the city). Whatever it is, Yuris won't gain much from this and teh will be all but tied up and Sulla can easily stomp over both teh and Yuris after mopping up Archduke.

This is really sickening

It's not what I want to see, but I can't blame yuris for trying for 2nd place when 1st isn't in the cards.

Well, we don't know that much about how Yuris is thinking, but from the early game it seems he has been focusing on a war against teh rather than Sullla, especially after teh blocked off Yuris from any real expansion into the central core with Frankfurt.

So it might be a case of being stuck in the old plan (changing plans is hard to do). Or Yuris is planning on making sure he has room to expand (by taking or razing Frankfurt), and then teching and building upwards while letting Archduke and teh bleed Sullla dry.

From a strategic perspective, Yuris might not even be aware he can slow Sullla down by taking Stockholm - remember that the ways we can dig out information from the game are much less well known and widespread than they are from Civ 4. And Yuris could probably take a bite out of Thearchduke, but teh is a lot closer, and could block any real connections between the cities.

If Yuris has done any real mistake here, it's probably in his failure to expand earlier.
