Yeesh, didn't realize how small Simius still was. No wonder you sent so few transports; any more would've had no place to go! Reserve spending (and a medium gunner design) would have helped the planet stay in Human hands, but it was no great loss. We'll just have to retake it a third time, and this time keep it!
The Council question was serious: If I have an opportunity to take a domination win (council victory with at least 1/2 but less than 2/3 of the votes, or after triggering the final expansion message from GNN) should I take it, or do we want to play on? (Note I haven't finished my first turn of the set yet, so I don't know if it'll be possible anyway.)
Oh, and: GOT IT! This looks like it's going to be fun.

The place was at max pop when the bears arrived, and I had no chance to actually adjust the spending IIRC (logic suggests I must have had one turn, but I would have tried to terraform if I could have done). I should have tried building medium gunships at the front, but without scanners I couldn't guarantee that they would have been there ahead of the bears (as it worked out, I could have got one turns production there from at least one planet). I can easily believe that the correct move was to at least try, though. And the birds blindsided me - I didn't want to risk trying to have transports arrive at the same time that I founded the colony, as I don't know what the order of events is...
I'd be keen to play on, as I'd like a crack at the Meks. It's all very well being told that this is a winning position, but I have struggled to convert positions like this into absolute victory in my recent games. But that's something I'd be happy to tackle myself as an Addendum (perhaps with some advice?) rather than an SG. That's if it can be done - the rocks only declared on us in the last couple of turns, so if its us against the Meklar in the vote, I doubt we'll get their help. If it's us against the rocks, we can perhaps get peace with the borg by killing more bears.

Good points, shallow_thought. There were indeed things I missed in writing my inital comments. And I don't think you even had a single turn! Your execution was actually as good as your intent - you just got unlucky with the timing.
When multiple invaders reach a planet, they attack in the order displayed (top to bottom) on the galactic map "Colonies" screen. So the player's troops always land first. Then, unless some of the others evaporate because of an alliance with you (Or peace treaty? Not sure...) you have to weather every other invasion that turn until they're all gone or you've lost the world.
I must admit I don't remember transport/colonizing order: It could be transports just arriving would die before the colship has a chance to found a colony, or that they'd fill the place up right away. I'll test it sometime if someone else doesn't pipe up with the answer, but right now it's late, and I have some more turns (and an Imperium when I'm done with 'em) to play....
No, I do think that doubling down on the commitment and getting a few medium gunships over Simius in the intial attack could well have been the right move. It would have been guaranteed to fail if the bears had been two turns faster, but 60 bears incoming was entirely predictable and I should have scrambled everything I could to stop them. I need to look up the mechanics of shooting down transports...
But yes, the timing was very tight, on both occasions, and I didn't get the rub of the green.
Have fun with the turns.

Played the first half of the set too late at night and made some egregious mistakes, as well as getting some bad luck. ... So we're only a lot better off than we were five turns ago instead of a very lot better off. Didn't win the election though, and I'm very unlikely to get better engines on my turns now.
Which means I'm setting 'em up for the next player instead!
Agh - sorry; it's going to take me until tomorrow night to finish my set. It just got too late, especially as I have to be up early in the morning. (So ... in a little over 4 hours.....) Sorry for holding the turns for so long!

No problem - it's all a bit difficult being down to three people. Get some sleep!

Thanks for your patience, guys! Full report will have to wait for tomorrow, but:
- I picked up some new planets.
- Then I managed to lose Simius again. Still didn't get it back, actually. (I don't want it back; I'd rather have Mrrshans around for espionage purposes....)
- Also I picked up some more new planets.
- I got us Doom Drives after all!
- The save is a little bit of a mess, with some transports en route (and a few more sent this turn that you could veto if you want, though there are more in space coming to their world of origin that would splatter in a couple turns if nothing is done) and some fleets moving around as well. There are some enemy fleets incoming too, though I believe I left ships in position to deal with the current ones.
- We are now officially at war with everyone, as the Mrrshans declared the turn after they re-established contact. We're not in contact with everybody though. Anymore.
- We now lead the galaxy in Total Power according to the Status screen.
- I just got the Doom Drive techs this turn, so no new ships have been built. I did design a few, but you can choose differently if you want.
- We have some reserves. The only place that has received any so far this turn is Exis.
- We have lots and lots and lots of unemployed population. They should find something to do. I suggest invasions behind a new fleet built from Exis and Endoria, but it's up to you.
Range 7, Inertial Stabilizer and Fusion Drives. Our feathered friends have indeed been generous. Oh - some of it could have been the Meklar; we seem to have conquered one of their worlds too... which I'm guessing is where our Merculites probably came from.
I'd be tempted to let the Mrsshan's build up Simius in peace so as so try and grab some of their weaponry from factories (hmm - Anti-Matter bombs- drool) but I doubt they will hold it against the bears and borg (unless we put our valuable ships in orbit to "defend" it? - we probably have other priorities). So yes, spying while we can is good - I note however that if we can hold Altair we're in range of Fieras anyway though, so should stay in contact.
Choice of targets... it's a shame we don't have good enough planetology to invade some of those rock worlds, but the Meklars do have controlled Toxic...
