downloading kyrub's patch (GOG/Mac)

Hey All,

I haven't been able to find any information but: does any one have info on installing kyrub's patch on the Mac/GoG version of the game? Can you point me to:

1. The patch
2. The install path for GoG?
3. If there's any difference between Mac/windows installs?

2. No idea, have you tried searching for the file "ORION.EXE" on your system?
3. Once you've found the directory, just unzip the patch into it. You need to make sure that the files NAMES.LBX, ORION.EXE and STARMAP.EXE are all replaced by the new versions!

Regarding point 3: On Windows, file names are not truly case-sensitive, so STARMAP.exe will overwrite STARMAP.EXE. On Mac, and other unix-like systems, those two files can coexist. (I was wondering for a long time why the patch didn't seem to work for me - that was the reason!)

Just confirming for posterity: for 2. search your Master of Orion directory for ORION.EXE.

You then just need to unzip the folder somewhere and move the files from the mod folder into the directory that is holding the ORION.EXE file, which should be the virtual C drive.

Sound like you got this sorted, but to be explicit, on Windows GoG installs under "c:\GOG Games", rather than under a user-specific place or the more normal "c:\Program Files" (probably for good reason).

Another question, forum:

Where is the save game directory located? I have tried to find it via spotlight search to no avail. It would help if I knew what it was called because it is apparently weird?

Apologies if this is located elsewhere: I promise I did a site:www.realmsbeyond.net/forums google search for "master of orion save game directory" etc to no avail.

Should be the same directory as ORION.EXE (and all the other game files). The save files themselves don't appear until you actually save in their slot from a game though. (SAVE7.GAM is the auto-save, automatically generated by the game, and starting around 2306(?) kyrub's patch starts generating separate auto-saves each turn as SAVE#.GAM where # is the game year minus 2302. (If I remember the details correctly.)

There are no SAVE#.GAM files in that directory. I currently have 6 save games.

What's the file path you follow to get to your save game folder?

I mean, mine is "C:/MPS/OrionM" but I doubt if that would help you; it's a custom-named folder on a Windows XP machine that contains all my game files for kyrub's 1.40M Orion. Have you tried just doing a search for SAVE7.GAM or the like? (Hopefully someone else can offer better advice; it's been a long, long time since I did PC emulation on a Mac, and I never tried it with Orion.)

I play on a Mac and the save files are all placed in the default folder as RefSteel says. Just search for STARMAP.EXE or ORION.EXE. That directory is where save files are placed (GOG or not).
