[no players] CiVI Lurking Part II: Sophomore Slump

Do you guys think Singaboy will DoW oledavy because he has nothing better to do (after Woden and Oledavy DoW Alhambram)?
Reply

Probably not right away.

I think he will wait for a good opportunity on TheArchduke's former cities. Though a capital strike would be amusing.

I think Singaboy's choices will depend a lot on what OleDavy does.  If he keeps a strong garrison facing Singaboy and seems to be stalemated with Alhambram mostly, I think Singaboy might sit out.  If Davy gives him an opportunity he'll take it.

On a related note, I think Davy/Woden's choice to Denounce/declare is pretty shortsighted.  Sure, it's worth a good chunk of culture, but it also makes the war that much less likely to work.  Alhambram will have lots of time to prepare, with a lot more confidence that he *needs* to be preparing (and, honestly, his current plan to use Cossacks immediately to kill muskets before they become infantry is a good idea).  That said, this is worse for Woden than Davy - Davy is fine with a stalemate now that he's ahead on science and culture rate (and eventually ought to be able to pick up Germany), but Woden needs a decisive victory.

And if Alhambram is right, it won't even work!  If he can preempt their declarations so that they don't get credit toward Nationalism, then they gave him the info for free.

I still think OleDavy is going to manage to pull out a win here, but I won't be shocked if Alhambram gets the win instead.  Cossacks appear to be quite powerful and he's being pressured into actually using his army this time hammer.  Plus out of everyone I think Alhambram is best at being flexible, adjusting his plans based on opportunities, which should serve him well at war.  Particularly with super strong/super fast Cossacks and a lot of bonuses to rushing units, so he can jump on any opportunity that he spots.

The only way Woden wins is if he manages to dismantle Alhambram completely so that he gets most of the spoils, and it just doesn't look possible from what I've seen.

I think I will do some self-analysis about my game in my thread if there is enough interest.

I am not going to spend too much time on any posts in this thread though, because some statements not unlike PBEM #1 really rub me the wrong way. Finding motivation to do write anything more is hard, if any post you do is used against you.

"Deregotative statment about Campuses." - Other priorities, I would love to build them if I get the more important ones out of the way.
"Wrecking economy." - On purpose?
"No way to win after the scout went into the wrong direction" - Yeah, sorry for not knowing the map and where the CS are.

This game started with both neighbours settling smackdab into my direction and I have been in crisis mode ever after. Without those GGs I would have been buried 70 turns earlier.

I do think that I am willing to:

1.) Play turns timely and with thought.
2.) Play to win
3.) Stick through even if it gets rough.
4.) Try to become a better player and provide a challenge.

I am just disappointed a bit in this community, that is all.

Hey The_Archduke welcome to the Luker thread and thank you for the well played game.

I believe most of the community agrees that you played a good game and were not only able to demonstrate the possibilites and finesse of the combat system of CIV6 but preseneted an interesting, well reported and well executed game as well.

It is clear that you had good reasons for all your decisions, it is just that people with more knowledge (for example lurkers reading all threads) will have a better information basis to evaluate your decisions. This does not necessarily mean that they would have been able to take better decisions, neither with the same or a better infromation level.

Do not let yourself be disheartened by any comments here, I am sure that most people enjoyed your part in this game and learned a lot from it. It is definetly true for myself and I am looking forward to an in detail analysis from your side.

I'd be interested.  And of course it would likely help you with item 4 on your list as well smile.

Well, bear in mind that those aren't universal opinions, those are points raised for discussion.  And honestly you've been steadily proving people wrong about criticizing you.

One in particular: the point about the scout going the wrong way has got to be more about Civ6 design than about your play.  Guessing the wrong direction for your initial scout shouldn't hurt that badly, but it does.

Ummmm. I am kind of disappointed at your comment.

It is clear to me that by playing a public game you open yourself to criticism. And most of the 'negative ones' (probably all - can't be sure - don't remember all posts) were very polite, kind and not insulting in any way.
On the other hand your statement puts pressure on lurkers to withhold any found errors - both real and imaginary. I would like to think that we are an important part of this forum as well.
Finally - and that was mine only criticism - your attitude was also lacking, so perhaps you shouldn't be the one to cast stones. E.g. when you attacked Singaboy for having a much better start then you did -> which was a) uncalled for and b) untrue (3rd turn horseman ?!)

Uncalled for?

Complaining over a turn pace which actually was quick. a.)

At that time I would have need to be clearvoyant or a lurker to know that Singaboy had the fun of a 3rd turn horseman. b.)
Do note that Singaboy actually benefitted from a corner position and 1 1/2 safe city states.

If you took the time to sit back and actually think how one feels on the receiving end in a game, you might not shoot so quickly.
Bacchus has been rather precise in criticism, I have yet to see where I turned his advice or criticism down.

What you do however is project the feeling that one has that extensive reporting leads to public humilation, whilstas low reporting leads to public ridicule.

I am only asking to tone it down a notch, thank you. cool

Did we ever definitively figure out if peace is a sufficient condition to clear the occupation penalty?

While everyone in here makes critiquing comments towards the game, I don't think I ever got the impression that people thought you played poorly. That's the point of a lurker thread, to comment on the game. Kind of like commentators for a sports broadcast, they aren't always going to have positive things to say. But that doesn't mean you played poorly. In fact all the other players have had only glowing reviews.

The middle position does suck, but that's the downfall with maps until we can world builder going.

Also, there's some next-level diplo being played right now. Fantastic read by Alhambram. I'm glad I'm not playing because I don't think I could keep up!
