Turn 11

I move the Slinger south to reveal...

and the warrior north...

Both directions looks promising! I put a few pins down on probable city sites. I am thinking the  second city goes on the rice for previously stated reasons and another city on the northeast pin. I am hoping there is more resources east of that locations. Warrior will first go north a few turns and then head east and south, looping back towards the second city site.

My immediate strategy

My immediate strategy is to kick out the settler and start a builder. Carnival will go: Settler->Builder->Warrior->Builder->Harbor(?)

Settle the second city, buy a trader (when Foreign Trade is completed), and buy a monument (when I have enough gold). The second city will start a 3 galleys, 2 finished and 1 to 1-turn remaining and then will switch to something else until Writing is complete. Once Writing is complete, I will chop (using 2nd Builder) into the Galley and overflow into the Campus. Then once Early Empire is done I will spam Settlers until my island is full.

For districts, at Carnival I will probably go ->Harbor->Campus->Theater(?)->Commercial Hub. At City #2: Campus->Harbor->Carnival. Then every other city (except 1 or 2 high production cities) will go some combination of Theater, Carnival, CH/Harbor. I will want 1 or 2 high production cities for an Encampment and/or Industrial Zone.

For civics, the plan is to get to PP as soon as possible and will research what I have the inspiration for or close too. Definitely go Foreign Trade before Craftsmanship for the 100% ship card. Probable will have to slow research unless I see an island on another continent.

Tech-wise, I figure I will prioritize the top of the tree for ships but mostly chase Eurekas. I plan on going: Mining->Sailing->Pottery->Writing->Celestial Navigation->Lower part of the tree or maybe straight to Shipbuilding. I will run a little bit of a farmer gambit but don't think I have to worry about another player anytime soon (Shipbuilding is a ways off). If barbs show up, I can get the eureka for Archery and fit it in somewhere to be safe.

Turn 12

The slinger finds teh end of the road...

Enough room for 1 city, probably on the western most jungle. Well, at least my Slinger can make it back in time to guard the Settler. He will move to the coast to see if any other land is close and the head back to Carnival. In the north,

Find another banana and some or citrus. Looks like the marked spot may be the best for a city.

Out of interest (I haven't played Civ VI, so perhaps I'm missing something obvious), why are you planning to settle on the rice rather than the forest one to the right of it? The idea of a canal city is looking quite tempting to my Civ IV eyes. smile

Good question and it is not obvious. At first I was set on the canal city site but changed my mind for a few reasons:

1. I want a Campus on the forest hill south of the double mountains and the Rice tile will bring that tile into 2nd ring. I will have to buy it since it will be  a low priority tile for the tile picker (it will go for the crab and/or wheat first).
2. It brings a second tile just north of Lisbon into 2nd ring (will also have to buy that one). I should be able to grab the wheat naturally but will have to buy the second tile. I actually want all the bordering tiles north of Lisbon before I put anymore envoys n it, otherwise it will steal tiles from me.
3. Settling on the rice will bring in another hill tile north of the double mountains.
4. If I settle on the Rice and put a theater on the tile just west of it, I can gain +1 adjacency with it being between the city center and the campus.
5. Finally, although a canal city would be nice, it will also be exposed to attacks by sea from both directions. I will put a harbor on the north coast in this city and probably a harbor on the southern coast in the northwest city location, so I will have places for ships to spawn for defenses of both coasts.

No matter where I settle, I won't use the Rice. If I settled at the canal spot, I would harvest the rice for a CH. If I settle the Rice, I have the wood to harvest into a district. I just think the better option is settling on the rice.

Turn 13

Singaboy finishes CoL. Looks like I will be behind him by a turn for a while thanks to his 4 or 5 food tile. Hopefully he when Builder before Settler, then I can get the jump on him. I move the Slinger to the jungle hill to see if I can see anything off the point and find...

This is awesome!  dancing Now I can finish Foreign Trade right around the time I found my second city (I think the turn after) and can run the 100% ship card for most of the 2 Galleys.

In the north...

Only revealed 1 tile. I wonder how big this is up here. I don't think anybody is in this direction because I would have met them, unless this is a massive island and they are on the other side.

Turn 14 & 15

Turn 14

Finally finish...

And put in...

Typical starting policies. I should be 3rd to a pantheon with oledavy get the first one (he found a religious CS as indicated by him leading the religion victory rankings) and Sinaboy 2nd because he finished CoL before me. Everybody else will probably finish it this turn or the next.

I move the warrior north...

Looks to be the northern coast. I will continue to confirm. Looking like I have my own island. Nice! No worries about an early attack from an island mate. Start moving Slinger back towards Carnival.

Turn 15

Look who shows up...

Good thing I am moving my Slinger back. I might buy a Slinger next turn to see if I can get the boost for Archery before Lisbon kills the scout.  I should have enough money to buy the Trader at the 2nd city and I won't have to build another unit in a while. Now at least I have the option to get the barb related boosts.

Warrior in the north finds...

Definitely the northern coast. Warrior will come back south and see what is in the east. Five desert hills, may be worth a Petra down the road.

I'd go for the second city on the spot 1E of the rice. The tiles on the first ring will have way better yields, which is a significant advantage. I think district positioning is not as important as a good snowball city. Finally, the canal there will be huge for mobility later in the game.

I like the idea of the galleys, but I think you are planning for them too early. I think getting some more military, builders, settlers, even a monument would be a better investment at this point in the game.

With the large landmass in the northeast, you may be right. I am going to wait a few turns until I get a better look at the northeast to make the final decision. I have until turn 25 to decide.  It is starting to look like I will only be able to get 1 freshwater city in the northeast, so I want to see if there may be options for more freshwater locations that settling on the rice might help  (see T17 screenshot in next post).

I disagree that it is too early for galleys. The first build at the second city has to be a galley. I agree a second galley could waiting until after something else, like a monument. I need to get out scouting to find a neighbor for the Writing eureka and 2 more CS for PP inspiration plus if I can find a few more CSs first, I can get their 1 envoy bonus. In addition, I will have the 100% production bonus when I can start building them. I won't have any other production bonus card to use. As for needing other things, I am thinking of buying a warrior when I get the turn back (T18) for added military. I think the scout went back to the camp and I should see a warrior sometime soon.  I don't want to get caught with my military in the east (scouting or guarding the settler). With 2 Warriors and 1 Slinger, I should be good for a little while. I plan on building 2 builders at Carnival after the Settler. After that, I will build a few more Settlers once I have Early Empire finished and have my Pantheon so I can run Colonialism. Maybe 2nd galley can wait until I can chop on its last turn into a Campus.

Turn 16 and 17

Turn 16

Finish...

Nothing else happened. Moving units back and revealed no new tiles. I start Sailing. Will shift out of it and start Pottery once I get close to 50%.

Turn 17

I move warrior in the north and reveal 1 tile.

Slinger is almost back to Carnival. Settler is out in 2.

Here is the score for reference...

Singaboy popped out a Settler because his score dropped by 1. Oledavy and TheArchduke are the others that are tied with me. I probably will start ending my posts with the scores, even if I don't comment on them. I found in PBEM2, it really helped to have them as references.

Next turn, I plan on buying a warrior. This means I won't be able to buy a Trader right away at the 2nd city, will have to delay 5 or 6 turns. I think now that a brab camp is somewhere in the northwest, it is better to have an extra unit around.
