I might be wrong, but I believe you're not allowed to clue word combinations.
You clue "COLD" and "TURKEY", but not "COLD TURKEY".
You clue "SQUARE" and "ROOT", but not "SQUARE ROOT".

Doesn't answer your question, but would make it moot in that particular case. wink

I just checked the rules...there's nothing about not cluing that kind of connection.

You can. It doesn't contradict any of the stated rules, and I've seen it done before multiple times online without anyone blinking an eye.

I think 'Radical 2' is legal (you have to supply a number stating the number of words that are being clued regardless of likely perceived word connections), although 'Radical two' isn't (providing a number in an unordinary fashion implying the number is important). The rules thread is probably more appropriate for this sort of stuff though. In the meantime I think we have one more game to play.

Indeed. Dave, David, Bob? Who wants to be spymaster?

One of the other Daves can do it, I'm happy to keep guessing.

I'd be interested, but would give it to Dave if he wants it.

Yeah, a rough board for Blue this time around.

As for pjabrony's hypothetical, if you wanted to clue SQUARE and ROOT without cluing REVOLUTION, your best bet would probably be Calculator 2.  neenerneener
I'd see Radical 2 as a clever way to clue ROOT/REVOLUTION.

Go for it. Sounds like you want it more than I do.

GG there. I was pretty sure red could get it done in 3 turns, so I knew I had to throw the hail mary. I just couldn't figure out how to get a good 3 groupings particularly with belt and tower. I knew we would run into greys with hanging words and figured we'd have to brute force it and just hope to get lucky, but I didn't count on apple. If I went for it in 4 I would have played different clues too with two 2 word clues like Trump. Everytime I tried to figure out how to do it in 3 it got borked. Hanging was just a bit too wide rangy. I might be a bit rusty. Anybody see a good way to clue the blue board in 3?

Also who wants next for blue?

It strikes me that most of the words we considered for Piano (IVORY/BELL/HOTEL/SWING/MARCH) were Blue. So maybe if you'd led with Piano 5 and then two 2-word clues, we would have finished in 3 turns? We would have still misfired once with FOOT (and possibly again with ROME), but two misses are acceptable. Still would have been a Hail Mary play, though.
