I love how evil Archduke played these negotiations, he has effectively gotten an entire core's worth of cities in trade for cities that he's just going to recapture when the peacedeal runs out anyways! (just look at the last post in his thread, he's seen this as well) I don't think Singaboy is going to be able to rebuild enough to be able to stop Archduke from just bringing the same ships back over again, I think he would have actually been better of without this "peace" entirely!
[NO PLAYERS] WW err CIV6 Game 4
|
This public diplomacy thread is the weirdest thing. Even compared to some of the same for Civ4 games.
Yeah it just seems to get whackier and whackier, it wasn't as purely distilled when I left it. I still don't get why everyone is so salty though, sportsmanship really appears lacking.
The piece I'm finding surreal is that defense is not working, at all. I keep expecting wars to fail, given how much warning people have that they're coming, but knowing it's coming doesn't seem to help.
I can't decide if this is because Civ6 isn't defense oriented, or if naval combat isn't, or what. Maybe it's just that MP is new enough that people aren't building the right amount/right style of military?

The diplo thread is funny.
They finally ditched the insane 2x movement bonus for this game which makes attacks so much easier (and keep in mind everyone plays like the 2x bonus is still there). This doesn't matter for this island map but did for other games. In this game Japper didn't build units and Archduke ****ed Singaboy with his 2x GAs.
I don't understand why Oledavy attacked Jerusalem. He wrote a colorful post, but he can't possible argue in a serious manner that backstabbing Woden will result on the same diplo situation as not doing it. A player doing what is best for him, disregarding what any allies expect, is very different from a player seeking revenge just to make you lose. Singaboy is a good example, he's now allied to Oledavy, due to the new political situation, while they were at war a few turns back. But he just burnt every bridge with Woden. That's not a problem in itself, I don't think we should take this games to a personal level (we shouldn't do it, not that we can make it, it's pretty understandable to get mad), but I just can't see how a meager city like Jerusalem makes up for the cost, considering Woden will most likely devote all his empire to hurt him from now on (which can include gifts to Archduke and other sorts of Kingmaking). Heck, Woden will give Archduke a permanently maphack from now on, when before that, the maphack was reversed.
A good example of well made backstab was Finharry mauling me in PB13 (was it?), after we were allies for most of the game (of course, that was not a diplo game, so there wasn't any actual deal broken). But since they took an island and burned my ports, I couldn't possibly get any revenge from them, so there was nothing to lose.
Ah, great days!
(Actually I still feel a little guilty about that - should have cancelled the fish-fish deal at least...)

He appears to have come up with a scenario where Woden's play is illogical (much inflated and one sided, based on my reading of both threads) and therefor he claims since he can't rely on Woden even if he doesn't backstab him, he might as well. And he may just be stuck with a hostile mindset after the whole alliance thing anyways. Not the decision I would have made; even if it doesn't come back to haunt him in this game (which it probably will), getting a reputation for breaking agreements will hurt you in future games, though I admit that gets into some murky metagaming grounds. Edit: Though in this case, I think you're looking at it wrong. Oledavy was already planning on taking Jerusalem, and I think his worries that if Woden takes it he might use it as a base for launching an attack on Japan if Japan starts winning against England probably isn't baseless. What breaking the agreement is gaining him is the 350 gold, and he's admitted to being gold starved right now. It's very much a short term gain that might cost him later, though. I don't think Woden's play is necessary illogical, but he's been deliberately needling and obfuscating and trying to play everyone off against each other, culminating in back-stabbing Dave with the Archduke friendship. I don't think any less of Dave for getting tired of it and giving him a bloody nose, and I don't see Dave joining another diplo game soon so it's not going to be a problem for him if anyone else does... I'm also not convinced Woden will throw his stuff at Dave when their deal runs out - I think he'll do whatever improves his position, which he probably would have anyway.
