I could always roll a whole roster of unrestricted matches, and then have people rank them Diplomacy style. That would give you a lot to consider, good agency, and fill some time lol

So if entries close by December, and we don't play until January, I'd imagine we can do a snake pick in a month without too much frustration.

I guess if we're fine with doing the picks before we can see our starts then a snake pick could work.

With pb18 gawdzak and others played a load of turns when players were away from a pc, the timer ran low or someone went temporarily awol. If anyone wants to quit they need to find a permanent replacement, and the sub team need good instructions to play war turns... It was pretty cool as the subs knew loads about what was going on in the world and shared it in the lurker thread.

What I'd like better would be if we could just get 3 leaders and civs* to choose from, and choose what you want based off that. (with Pro/Inca being soft-banned, I guess)

edit: just saw these; either one is fine with me too.

AdrienIer Wrote:For the picking method I propose the PB32 method. You get rolled a leader and civ, can reroll the leader, the civ, or both. You get three chances.

I'm happy with any of these, but like Adrien's best. I'd kinda like a starting screenshot before choosing though.

i personally as a newer player would like to have as few of islands/sea warfare potential going into the map as possible..

Okay, I`ll see how my schedule looks in the new year. Perhaps I can do some subbing. (Can`t really promise anything yet).

I'll participate in this game in some form, though whether it's as an interested ded-lurker, on-deck replacement (like my later role in PB18) or even a main player is still TBD.

Honestly - the temporary sub role can use as much or as little time as you're able to provide.  If you can't do it all, then they just have to fall back on what they'd do anyway without you, which will be worse.  It's perfectly kosher to refuse to become a permanent sub; that's a different level and type of commitment.  Temporary subbing is all about minimizing pauses to keep the pace up.  Ideally enough people volunteer to handle all the requests, but if that doesn't happen, something is still better than nothing.

Most requests for help when we did big games before were for vacations or one day AWOL due to work, that sort of thing, where the time investment was literally 'notice request, read thread for password, log in, move scout NE-N as requested, log out'.

Depending on policy, they may also ask you to use best judgment on civs with the timer running low - but again that's in lieu of letting the turn roll with no orders, so you can only improve things.  They ought to decide their policy on pauses/reloads/etc before the game starts, probably depending on how many sub volunteers there are.

The temporary sub role is mostly important at the beginning of the game. Once some players are taken out of the game they'll be able to take temporary sub status too.
