Wow, I missed the point where GJ and dtay actually went for each other (I assume it was GJ kicked things off - as predicted by JR4's recon).

I guess if GJ handles this well it will be GG, but with some of the battle taking place through your lands there may be some options available for fun mischief . Less so with DS refusing to roll over and make peace though.
It may have looked easy, but that is because it was done correctly - Brian Moore

This has endgame potential right here. I agree with giving dtay Open Borders; the alternative is just throwing the game to GermanJoey. And we don't want to force dtay to declare war on us just to keep GJ's forces from sheltering in the safety of our borders! (I believe dtay was waiting to see if we'd accept OB before ending turn: He didn't want to declare war on us, but would have done so had we rejected his offer.)

There's no way Dark Savant can approach this research rate even in a Golden Age! We're second in GNP, blowing the average away completely. That Rival Worst GNP that's further below the average than it is above half of ours? That's Dark Savant - in a Golden Age! Our MFG is technically worst in the world ... but that Rival Worst just two hammers better than ours? Dark Savant in a Golden Age again. Rival Worst Crop Yield, further from us than we are from the average, and less than half of GermanJoey's? Yup, that's Dark Savant again. Rival Worst soldiers, at less than two thirds of ours (or the average)? Dark Savant, who (as mentioned) lacks the crop yield and mfg to make up the difference quickly, and that's including all the units he has sitting around in Lakeside, far from his core, to guard against or threaten a "rival" with whom he could have had peace for the asking at any time. (Not to mention three Ships of the Line about as far away from Gavagai as it's possible to get, with hostile Khatunate waters on the simplest route in between.) And much as Gavagai is going to want to wait for a better tech advantage, there's still a chance he's going to act ASAP while Dark Savant's forces are out of position and the game leaders who would otherwise divide his Ethiopian spoils are busy with each other.

Do we have any amphibious units on Galleons in case Gav attacks and Dark Savant ~abandons one of his coastal cities, by the way? Just in case....

Huh - and looking at civstats, it oddly doesn't seem to think you finished turn. Did you pause first, then end turn? (And does that cause the game to wait and end your turn only after the game is unpaused?) I guess that would make sense, since you can "queue" other actions while the game is paused, and it'll execute them in order when the pause is released....

Yup: He declared (with the first half of the timer) on turn 102. As JR4 reported, GJ took and razed two cities, including one on our northeast border, attacking through our lands.

Oh, I neglected to mention above, when talking about our tech rate: This is without building Wealth or Research, and we're getting more commerce on our villages and towns next turn, which means especially in our capital, where we're also about to add an Academy.

(The screenies above suggest we're also building a Courthouse in Danashri, which would also help our GNP slightly, but I suspect we swapped it to a unit or a Drydock before EoT. If not, I'd suggest doing so now - preferably a unit unless we'll be back in OR before it finishes....) In truth, I'd kind of want Drydocks only in cities that can be expected to finish Ironclads within a couple turns of teching Steam Power. I'd want to churn enough units during this Theo period to switch back into OR after getting a few Ironclads out, then build Drydocks in other places, plus levees in every city that can get them. (Also the other stuff like Courthouses and Observatories that I'd suggest delaying right now, and some theaters in certain cities...)

All that said, GermanJoey might be making the point moot here if he accomplishes enough in this war to get a concession from everybody.

What sort of fun would you recommend? Me, I'm in favor of just spectating with the aid of our huge EP lead on dtay (and the sentry chariot we have on the border when appropriate) with some well-chosen screenshots and a good supply of popcorn, but maybe that's just the lurker in me!

Okay, I got home very late (got tomorrow off!) and discovered that I somehow managed to not end turn. Logged in and finally did that. Luckily it didn`t slow down the turn pace because of dtay`s pause request. More thoughts coming up tomorrow.

It is very fascinating how the veteran players use the Open Borders with neutral players to attack someone else. Big fleets can hide just behind a neutral city, waiting for an opportunity to arise. I think we`re pretty much forced to sit this war out, if at all possible. The war with Dark Savant keeps a lot of troops away from our big land neighbors which both have a larger military than us in the first place. Dtay obviously needs to turn the tide of the war soon if he intends to win this game. Another Zulu city was razed this turn (not the filler N of Chubei) if I read Civstats correctly. I don`t thing dtay is anywhere near to conceding but maybe a commando raid on his capital could make him change his mind.

Yes, our tech rate is looking pretty good right now and will definitely improve when we get Printing Press. We could contemplate building a lot of Research in order to speed up a key tech (Assembly Line?). For the time being we`re just burning through our huge stack of gold. If we`re pulling ahead of Dark Savant even when he`s in a Golden Age, that`s surely a very good sign for the overall health of our civ. It`s annoying that DS keeps a huge stack in Lakeside, pinning down a lot of our units but it could lead to a quick disaster if Gavagai takes the border cities. Next turn we could load up a few Knights to look for opportunities (no units are loaded on Galleons near Mist now iirc). We`ve got a couple of Amphibious Knights stationed there.

The point about building a lot of units when we`re in an XP civic is a good one. Let`s see how many units we can finish in the last 10 or so turns (or perhaps a bit less). Danashri is still building a Courthouse but could swap to a unit instead. Our power rating is the best life insurance we can ask for!

Couple quick questions:

1) If we are indeed planning on going straight for Ironclads, is it possible to get a screenshot of GermanJoey's core (i.e. including his capital) with tile yields turned on? We know he has at a 'clad, which means he has coal connected. We can prepare to hook up the resource in one turn even without knowing where to find it, I think (if it's not in a hill that's already mined) but it might help to see where GJ has his sources, since that might suggest where we'll find ours.

2) Anything new for GermanJoey on the F4 tech screen?

TURN 203

As Printing Press finished and we built an Academy in Borte, our tech rate improved a lot. We`re now making more than 1600 beakers per turn! Our gold saving rate is well over 700 gpt. Replaceable Parts will indeed be 1 turned, giving our production a boost. After RP is done we`re only 2 techs away from Railroad. I still like going for it asap in a straight beeline. Railroads would improve our defensive flexibility a lot, allowing us to position our collateral units centrally. Machine Guns won`t be easy to destroy, I`m pretty sure that the Great Powers will turn elsewhere for new conquests if we make it to Railroads alive.

Dark Savant sent his 3 SoTL right N of the new-founded Nighon. He`s also got a Sotl/Frigate pair in Lakeside. We now have 4 Amphibious Knights (or unpromoted 10XP Knights) loaded on ships giving us options. Steadwick doesn`t really have a lot of units anymore..

Joey`s Knights moved SW towards Borte. His Rifles are N of Chubei and in Skhodai.

I`m undecided on what to do with the last GG. He`s still sitting in Borte, but we should probably settle it in Bulugan or make that Military Academy in Muqa, Tough call. Oh, and we got a Great Prophet in Nambui this turn! It went to Toregene and will probably continue to Borte on t204. Also, Krill started a Golden Age.

Graphs and demos: A few Windmills are being reverted to Mines. That should help our mfg. I can`t wait to get Steam Power, giving us the option of building Levees.

1) Sure! I couldn`t find any Coal but didn`t have a close look. It would be pretty bad for us if we don`t have access to it at all. We need to industrialize quickly when we get the appropriate techs.

2) The F4 screen is very interesting. We`re doing pretty good tech-wise. Krill seems to be doing.. pretty much the same gambit as we did by saving a ton of gold and likely going for the Oxford University. But he doesn`t have Education yet! So setting up all the Universities needed for Oxford will take a lot of time. Dtay doesn`t have Steam Power or Military Science. He`s probably heading for Airships asap as he`s being outspent in EP by several players. Joey has 2k gold saved up but he doesn`t possess Railroads as of t203. The tech gap doesn`t look that horrible to me. At least factoring in our 9-ish turns left of our gold savings at full research.

Also, here`s where the last razed city of dtay was located.
