A couple of unfortunate die rolls
Lion ate my scout at 21% odds. And religion was founded in the city near the capital, not in the one farther away, despite that one being older and large

Superdeath's war dec against me is stupid. He maybe will raze my baby city (and lose his Chariot), or kill a couple of Archers (and lose at least a Scout and a Chariot. Either way the trade would technically be slightly favourable for him, but declaring wars for slightly favourable trades doesn't seem that attractive. Perhaps that's why I'm so bad at wars?
But as it stands, I'm not sure what he's trying to accomplish. Unless there's a huge stack of Chariots in the fog Maybe he decided to attack because I delayed Hunting for too long and couldn't build Spears. But I can now
Hopefully I will be able to show some screenshots over the weekend

Superdeath played, no new Chariots showed up
This is the disputed city (not sure why it's disputed, it's firmly in my territory). It had an Axe on defence, and this turn I used this Axe to kill his Scout, leaving the city undefended, but giving him a choice to either raze the city or kill the Axe. I also have another Axe incoming, as well as the Warrior from the capital. 2 Workers are busy chopping the Spearman in the city
Since Superdeath went for the Axe kill, I will now almost certainly hold the city - I will have 2 units on defence next turn, and a Spear after that. I will lose 2 Axes for his Scout and Chariot, but that's fewer hammers than a Settler (and I won't lose the city output until it's resettled). So all in all, as I said, Superdeath won't achieve much by this war except souring our diplo. I feel his play was based on the premise "I'm Egypt, I ought to Chariot rush my neighbour" rather than actual planning/strategy
Maybe it was a mistake to delay Hunting for so long when I knew I had Egypt and Mongols next to me. But I felt getting a religion was essential for my gameplan, and WilliamLP founding Buddhism made me lose a few turns of research wasted on Meditation

Loaded the turn to find peace offer from Superdeath
I accepted - I don't expect to make gains from this war, so there's no reason to continue. But this kinda confirms my statements that the wardec was stupid. He declared war, lost a Scout, killed my Axe, and offered peace (with his Chariot being next to an undefended city, I don't think he knows I have the means to defend it). Not the most productive war in the history of Civ4

Not really. I haven't expanded particularly well and am falling behind. However I do have Egypt, Mongolia, and Zulu as my neighbours, so that's my excuse for playing carefully, perhaps excessively so. I did exchange some corn-for-corn and fish-for-fish deals with Superdeath lately, so hopefully at least the Egyptian border will remain calm for some time
Ultimately though, while I can find excuses all I want, the fact remains that for a multitude of reason I haven't been able to put as much effort as possible into this game. I haven't done any simming, I haven't made longterm plans, and falling behind was a natural consequence
Reading T-hawk's Alfa Centauri thread made me realise just how much effort has to be put into a Civ-like game (or probably any game worth playing) to play it perfectly. I probably will never reach this level in Civ4, but I'm coming to conclusion that I can't keep joining games when I can't even be bothered to make a sim and spend an hour or two to make sure the plays I'm making are optimal
I will of course play out this game to the best of my ability, but I think it's a fair decision to avoid joining future games if I don't have the time and/or willpower to play them seriously, with proper planning and simming and not missing out on details
I will provide updates if anything notable happens, but for the moment there's really nothing I can think of. If there's anything in particular you would like to know, please ask

As long as you're having fun, does it matter if you are playing optimally? Of course if turns become a drag as you fall behind that understandable.

They're fun, as long as I don't open trade screen and see how many cities my neighbours have

Screenshots? How would you rank everyone in the game currently?
