[SPOILERS] naufragar is in for a penny

Peace breaks out across Germany. (I really need a better name for my civ. The Human Believers' Stepdaughters Federation? As an aside, I'm loving the SMAC interest that's sprouted here recently, despite being dizzying to keep track of.)

I realize now I didn't take a screenshot of the peace treaty, but it's exactly what you'd expect. Adrien turned down my offer to see if he had an opening, saw he didn't, and offered 10 turns of peace. The contents of that galley were a skirmisher and a warrior. This was turn 107. Since I accepted enforced peace, I felt I could go ahead and play before him this turn (108). Just to be on the safe side I sent Adrien the following PM.

Hey Adrien,

Last turn (107) I accepted your peace offer after you played. This turn (108) I moved before you. I hope this was ok: we're at peace, and I don't think there's any reason you and I have to maintain a turn split. I'm still getting a handle on MP etiquette, so please let me know if there's a problem.

Good luck!
naufragar

I was trying to justify my double move without saying "I'm not in a settling race with you." The subtext should be clear. The only place we could possibly compete for city spots is a resource-less corner between Cairo, him, and me. Still, no sharing info outside the game. (Rereading the PM, I hope the tone is ok. A bit flip to end with "good luck" after I got a ~4.5% positive outcome. Not my intention.)

Speaking of settling new cities, that settler that had been camping out for forever at Factory Drift finally has a spot to go to. This was, as chess players would say, a blunder. There's usually little reason to not use your settlers to found cities.  duh With Lincelt, just about any new city is profitable. (4 gold from commerce, 1 from city tile.) All the same, our maintenance costs are something else.

Enough talk. Have picture.

The place Rick got bumped is just hilariously bad. Look at that perfect combination of peaks and territory to box him in. It gets better, however. I moved him to the forest 2N of the stone, and there are units on both hills 1N and 3N of Tula, and there's no way for him to use his woodsman skills to slip through foreign territory. I considered tossing gold at Mr. Cairo and just trespassing, but why risk it. You can see water to the north, so I don't know how much more space Rick has to maneuver. He will wait here unti he is pushed out or somebody gets Alphabet.

This screen is my border with Rusten. I've moused over one of the tiles south of the peak in my BFC.

This turn (108) I was down to 53% culture. I'm going to lose that tile very soon. This game feels like one crisis after another. I need to plan better. I can't find where I read this, but I thought culture was proportionately weaker the further from your city. Rusten is producing 6 culture, I think. (Madrassa (4), Barracks (1), Religion (1)) Water Garden is producing 4-5. (I can't remember if the barracks is producing 2 culture. I think it is.) I had thought this would've been enough to fight for my second ring versus his third. We are getting a monument after the forge, but it'll be too late at that point. Frustrating. I'm gonna have to run an artist here, I know it.  cry

Speaking of Rusten, he and superdeath finally have some war weariness and a small but noticeable power dip.

Makes me breath a little easier.

You know what doesn't?

I'm pretty sure that the last time I checked, Mackoti and I were at 59/66. I could be wrong, but I think this means he just put 5 EP into me. Which is bad for two reasons. He has an interest in me, and he has at least one courthouse online and so can outspend me. I can't stop him getting tech visibility on me, but I can delay it. I don't need him to know my timeline to catapults, no thanks.

Here are the demos for turn 108.

I include this because of something funny with the MfG. As it stands, I'm 7th in that category. At 109 hammers, I'm 5th. There's a bunch of us all neck and neck, apparently. Also, laugh with me as we see the 81 food difference between me and top crop yield, or as I like to call it 1200 potential hammers.  bang

Edit: I should also mention that someone landed the Mausoleum of Maussollos, although I don't know who. Xenu's score went up by 20 and Mack's by 17. I had hoped that the engineer we saw was Xenu's from the Pyramids, although I didn't check the timing. Mack has had Calendar for forever, though. Oh man. Great Library and MoM within 3 turns? No. My optimism refuses to believe it.

In a bit of a rush, so many pictures, little commentary.

Finally finished scouting my own land, and my lack of scouting when founding Factory Drift makes me swear at my monitor yet again. Why have three cities when you can have one and strand a 6 food tile?

Moving on. Don't want to be profane.

I feel bad rejecting all of superdeath's diplo overtures, but I honestly have a reason every time!

If I didn't have gems, I would snap this up in a heart beat. Holy smokes, an extra happy (2 happy with forges) in every city for 5 gold per turn? That's an amazing deal. Superdeath, if you ever read this, I was not intentionally giving you the cold shoulder! I was getting gems from Commodore. You can check this in the foreign advisor screen. This turn, actually, I canceled that deal because I hooked up my own gems. I wish I had some way of communicating with Commodore, because I hate to throw his cities into unhappiness without warning. He's been friendly to my civ, with the work boat trespassing and this deal. Also, he's Commodore. He archer rushes Zulu players while quoting Kipling. I'm a huge fan.

Xenu found me and he has alphabet.

I accepted this deal in a heartbeat. I honestly thought I'd have to pay. Turns out, he needs to get a scout through my lands.

My own scouting has stalled. Both Rick and my chariot are boxed in and will wait until alphabet. The work boat keeps on trucking.

Boy, free trade is the lifeblood of international economy, huh?

Thanks, Xenu, for the 21 gold! I wonder if he cancels once he's out of my borders and asks me to pay for trade. (Yes, yes. Since foreign routes are worth 1 gold more, this is really only like a differene of 7. shhh  )

I finally got a great person of my own. In fact, the stars aligned, and people born in 125 B.C. were especially gifted in the sciences.

Because I wouldn't know micro if it hit me in the face, this scientist wasn't actually born at the capitol. Cap needed to do other things, so the scientist has a turn of transit time before he can found his academy.

Is the limit on number of cities maintenance 4 gold or 6? Either way, bring on courthouses. Forgot to check how much I was saving in Org. Next turn.

Lastly, I got melancholic looking at the zoomed out view of the world. More and more, I regret not challenging Mack somehow. He now has the land of two civs and will just keep exploding. I don't know what I could've done. He had the pointiest sticks; I did not. Still, looking at all the land he has to expand into makes me sick to my stomach. (That's a bit strong. How about extremely uncomfortable?)

Oh, I forgot. I found either a cause or a symptom of the Rusten-Superdeath-BGN strife.

Snug as a bug.

I wasn't expecting to get PTSD flashbacks in this thread.

It's dependent on difficulty level; I think it's 6 gpt on Monarch but that's based on some quick googling rather than personal knowledge.

Sorry! Wasn't that the game where you made the nomadic invasion to end all nomadic invasions, though? That game was glorious craziness every which way.

Thanks! I should stop being lazy and do my own googles, but 4 or 6, we still need to cut maintenance down drastically. I'm actually pretty happy about the empire currently. Land area's above average. Crop yield is above average, and we're hopefully about to grow lots of pop thanks to the sudden gain of three happiness (our 2nd mining lux + forges). Plus courthouses only a couple turns away, I like our mid game setup. The question now is do we wait for knights to hit someone or do we plan to attack the moment we can mass enough catapults.

Evidence I shouldn't play Philosophical:

Ended up founding an Academy, but I hesitated for a while, and I'm still not sure it was the right call. Open Borders would get me a lot of beakers, and it would make my scouting easier, which would also end up getting me beakers. I don't know. The decision's been made, so I wouldn't mind feedback. The plan in the long-ish run is to get bureau at the cap and grow it big. And the next great person, who won't come along for a long while, needs to be a golden age civic swap kinda guy. So I think I didn't have time to bulb and academize before getting a golden age. (The capitol's not actually building a market. It's growing an additional pop and then making a worker. As you can tell from the emptiness of my core, all my worker labor is at the frontiers, which wasn't a problem when my happy cap stagnated, but now I desperately need forests chopped and works shopped. And damn do workshops take forever to build. I say I'll be growing my capitol, but it's going to be a long time...)

Is bulbing instantaneous, or does it wait for end of turn in pitboss?

Thanks. I had assumed, but there are enough pitboss mechanics strange to me that I didn't want to take the chance.

Nothing new to report. I resisted the temptation to double move Gavagai, so my work boat is probably dead.

I declared to pass through and ended up next to a galley. The way I assume this turn goes is Gavagai opens up the turn, rejects ceasefire offer so he can look around, realize my boat is blocking his, doesn't want to waste the turn resending a ceasefire, so just kills it. C'est la vie.

Spotted a catapult in a Rusten city. Good to know. 2metraninja declared war on Mr. Cairo. Interesting. Trying to maneuver Rick to get a peek, but that's unlikely.

Poking my head up to report. The work boat died a while ago in the manner predicted. Poor guy. I should've just parked him and waited for Alphabet.

Want to know how to live a long fulfilling life in civ4? Don't live in a coastal town with two sources of seafood and no hammers.

That is four, count 'em, four stacked whip unhappy. It's also 330 hammers of infrastructure, so.... One unhappy face disappears, so I'm keeping the city growing. The forge build isn't totally nuts. It's the best source of happy I have right now. It's 60h for one happy face, so equivalent to 2 colosseums. People's Teeming actually can't even benefit from the forge's production modifier with its base production of 3, but the engineering specialist will be a useful source of hammers. You can see I'm teching alphabet. I was going to start a couple of two turn catapult builds, but I decided to build wealth instead. Bit of a drug, this wealth building thing.

The wealth building is really buoying my GNP. I'm drifting dangerously close into "snackable" territory with my power rating. (No clue how I went up a rank in land area. Didn't plant new cities. Somebody losing land?) After Alphabet, we begin the long slow trek to Guilds for knights (and buffed workshops). I also want to have Monotheism and Civil Service in time for a civic swap, and if I can time it right, I want Literature, so I can build the Heroic Epic while in a golden age. Lots of balls to juggle. I'm probably going to have to just pick one. In the back of my mind is the looming notion that Mackoti's empire will get hungry again soon. He's been digesting all the land he got forever ago after he conquered Aretas, but his GNP is titanic, and he's sure to hit knights ages before I can. At this point, I'm not as concerned that he attacks me, although perhaps I should be. I'm more concerned he attacks Mr. Cairo, whose power just started to really climb but is still a bit behind. If that happens, I'd like to be able to do something besides sit on my hands. I realize I had 4 neighbors by land: Mr. Cairo, Mackoti, Aretas, Rusten, going clockwise. I've met 3 neighbors of Mack, so there could still be somebody else out there to his NW.
There is no way to peace. Peace is the way.

Thank you for the excellent reporting.

Do you foresee any available vectors for attack incoming, instead of being attacked yourself?
