There's a free-to-play weekend for the Endless games on Steam, and big discounts (66% off of Endless Space 2, 75% off of Endless Legend). There are new DLCs out, I hope they're included in the free-to-play. The "weekend" has already started. Man, I wish I worked at Steam Endless Space 2 is definitely worth checking out, if you haven't already. Endless Legend does some interesting things too, it had unstacked cities before Civ 6.
Also, discounts on various digital boardgames. ( EDIT: Including Scythe)

Endless Legend I thought had interesting points, but the combat system was too tedious to finish a single game. Don't know why tactical combat works in some games but not in others, it definitely didn't work for me in EL
Sirian talked about Engless Space 2 at length in this forum, and I feel the plaudits are well deserved

Thanks for mentioning this. I have been on the fence about Endless Space 2; people seem to like it but I bounced off the first one pretty hard. A free weekend gives me a chance to give it a try and see if I like it better than 1.

Have not had a chance to play, yet. Today was exceedingly busy. I hope to take a look at the game tomorrow.
Any recommendations for settings/options to try for an initial game?

I would recommend starting with the Empire and branching out from there. They are not the most powerful faction but they are the most straight forward. Your citzens produce extra influence which you need for diplomacy and to deal with minor factions. They can rushbuy units and buildings with that influence too. Their ships have plenty of slots and are slightly balanced twoards agression.
For Galaxy set up I would probably go with spiral 4 arm and 4 factions with set starting locations. Again just gives you some early garenteed room for colonization and to play with those mechanics.
All this is just to get the basics down of how the tech tree, quests, system development, etc work. The game really shines in the variablity of it's factions, each of which break the rules in some way. For example the riftborn colonize "backwards" perfering hostile sterile planets like lava or ice and having to tech to colonize fertile words. Meanwhile the Vodoyani live on giant ships and can just move wholesale to a new system.

Overall I like it much more than Endless Space 1. The UI feels overly busy -- there is so much stuff crammed in, it really feels like the game is shouting "look how much stuff there is!" Hopefully this is just being new to the game, and the interface will feel more natural once I get more accustomed to it.
Still trying to get a feel for a lot of the game mechanics; don't have much of an idea what I am doing yet. But having fun, which was not the case with the first game. So the free weekend resulted in a sale, which I would think is the goal for them.

You'll get used to it pretty quickly, and it's mostly the same info showing up on different screens so you hardly ever use all of them.
I'd recommend Sophons for a new player, just chase science and there's not much that can go wrong. UE really needs a lot of military finesse to make work.
