Dragon Quest

Dragon Quest is another series I sometimes play with silly challenge restrictions.  I did a multiclass solo run of 9 years ago, but I don't remember enough about it to post a report. Right now, I'm playing 5.  Any variant of this game should begin in the 2nd generation because the first few hours are so scripted.  (i.e. you don't have much choice in your party composition, the story is more linear, etc.)  So all three of my save slots are in Fortuna right after Madason (the Hero) escaped from slavery.

This is going to be a human-only playthrough.  In DQ5, you're expected to recruit monsters to fill your party.  Human characters other than Madason rotate in and out of the party, kind of like Final Fantasy 4.  Harry, the partner you start with, leaves after the Coburg story arc.

You won't find another human party member until Madason's love interests show up in the marriage story arc.  A few early dungeons are going to be effectively the same as a solo playthrough.  The 3rd generation should have a full party of humans, but I never got that far with my first save.  (I first tried a Hero + Monsters run, but that made the game too easy, so I started over.)

Dragon Quest 5 Human Only:  Revisting the First Dungeon

I spent the gold I had saved up in the 1st generation on equipment for Madason and Harry.  Madason got an Edged Boomerang, a useful weapon for a limited party like mine.  Boomerangs in Dragon Quest strike every enemy, but each hit after the first has reduced damage.  It was still better than the single and group target weapons available at the time.

I didn't bother getting Harry a new weapon because he was more of a Black Mage anyway.  Armor was essential for Harry because of his low level, so I got him a Leather Kilt, a Scale Shield, and Hardwood Headwear.  Madason got no new armor except for the same hat as Harry's.

Madason's hometown of Whealbrook was mostly destroyed when he came back, including his house.  The townsfolk suggested that Madason's father Pankraz hid something important in the local cave Whealbrook Adit.  The Slime in the well gave the most relevant information  This was the first dungeon of the game in the childhood arc.  This time, Madason could take the raft on the right side of the river and enter a new area.

The treasures in the cave were worthwhile.  Madason ate a Seed of Strength and a Seed of Agility.  You didn't think I would give those to a temporary character like Harry, did you?   rolleye  Harry did get something worthwhile out of this trip:  a Iron Cuirass that Madason couldn't equip.  I also got some gold and a Night Light to make the day/night cycle more convenient.

Madason and Harry weren't fast enough to kill the Metal Slimes before they fled.  Wyrtles were the scariest opponents because they were resistant to physical attacks.  Madason's Whoosh and Harry's Frizz were needed to take them out.  Well, when I wasn't running away from them.  Walking Corpses were common, and had a decent amount of health.  Owlbears were easier to kill, but still drained the party's HP.  By the time I reached the bottom of the cave, Madason had almost run out of magic.  He grabbed the Zenithian Sword (Is DQ5 on the same planet as DQ4?), only to discover he couldn't equip it.

Harry leveled up to 6 and learned Kasap, a useful multitarget defense debuff.

My characters limped out of the cave with less than half their health, and fled from most battles to avoid paying the Dragon Quest "death tax".  Dragon Quest is like Pokemon and Earthbound in that you lose money when you get a Game Over instead of having to reload a save file.

For those not used to the post-DQ8 translations, I've listed the "Dragon Warrior" versions of the spells on the right.

Frizz=Blaze
Whoosh=Infernos
Kasap=Decrease

Dragon Quest 5 Human Only:  Fake Queen Plot

I bought some new armor for Madason in Roundbeck, his childhood friend Bianca's hometown.  Or former hometown, because she moved away while Madason was forced to build the evil Order of Zugzwang's temple.  The local rumors suggested that Harry's brother Wilbur was a terrible king, and that the Queen Dowager was oppressing Coburg with high taxes.  She was also behind the destruction of Whealbrook.

Harry proved his identity to Frank O'Phobe by talking about the bridge guard's fear of frogs.  The real challenge of a Dragon Quest game is surviving the puns!  To get into Coburg Castle, the party had to go through a small dungeon filled with monsters such as Slime Knights, Grudgerigar birds, Eyepods, Wyrtles, and Legerdeman wizards.  It wasn't too much of a slog, especially once Harry learned the all-target attack spell Bang by leveling.

The Queen Dowager was locked in the dungeon, hinting there was an imposter.  The Fake Monarch is one of the oldest RPG cliches, and it refuses to die.   King Wilbur told Madason and Harry to look for a mirror that would reveal the truth.  A book in the castle vault said it was in Abovitall Tower near the abbey.  The party teleported to the tower, and found out they needed Maria from the abbey to get inside.

For a bit of trivia, a character named Darwin mentions what is probably the Secret of Evolution that Psaro used to become a monster in DQ4.  Perhaps DQ5 is a distant sequel.

There was no boss in this dungeon either, but navigating it was annoying.  I got to the top twice and fell to the bottom.  I had to look on GameFAQs to learn that you're supposed to avoid the middle square at the top.  There's no in-game hint about this other than Maria talking about believing in things you can't see.  There weren't many treasures other than gold and a Seed of Magic to increase Madason's MP.

The monsters were similar to those in Coburg Castle, but there were a few new ones.  The Cross Eyes could cast Midheal on themselves, and Restless Armors could summon Healslimes if my memory is correct.

Madason used Ra's Mirror to reveal the Faux Dowager boss.  She was much more difficult than other encounters up to this point.  She could summon Bags O'Laughs and Lesionnaires as backup, though this was welcome because I could take them out easily with the Edged Boomerang.  The real danger was her fire breath that could hit both Madason and Harry in the 40s-50s damage range.  Harry ran out of Medicinal Herbs due to taking so much damage.  At least Madason had Midheal to keep himself alive!  Kasap was necessary to debuff her high physical defenses.  After that, even Harry could hit her hard with his default knife.

After I won, Harry left the party to help Wilbur restore Coburg's prosperity.  He at least had the courtesy to return his items to me.  Madason would be solo for a while. . .

I'll save the next major post for later, but I have to say that this solo section is rough!  DQ5 doesn't split experience like DQ9, so it's a slow grind to get to the point where Madason can survive the random battles near Mostroferrato.  6 enemies can attack you at a time if you get an unlucky encounter.

Going to the casino may be necessary.  The Liquid Metal Sword Metal King Sword is the best weapon I can get at this point.

Dragon Quest 5 Human Only:  No Pokemon, Only Man

When Harry left the party after beating the Faux Dowager in Coburg Castle, Madason wouldn't have new allies for a while.

The game encourages you to use monster allies at this point, and even prevents you from taking the boat to Lodestar Harbor until you buy the covered wagon in Fortuna.  However, the event flag that allows monsters to join your party doesn't activate until you talk to a different character in Fortuna, and that isn't required to advance.  The wagon lets you store extra party members, and gives them experience points if you're in a place where you can bring it with you.  Some dungeons don't allow the wagon, while others do.  It doesn't seem consistent to me.

In Lodestar Harbor, I bought some new equipment for Madason.  The most important was the Magic Shield to grant extra defense and fire resistance for the upcoming volcano dungeon.  The Full Plate Armor was nice too.  Even with that, Madason had a slim chance of victory.  One group of Metal Slime Knights got multiple critical hits in a row.  Sometimes Monster Tamers summoned an endless horde of Cureslimes.  Or groups of 6 birds would gang up on Madason.

To survive, I ran from most of the fights and got the Zoom spell in Zoomingale.  Yes, the "warp back to town" spell is part of the plot.  Toilen Trouble needed some ingredients to create the spell, which could only be found at night to the west of town.  I got the plant, and then I could travel more conveniently.

In Mostroferrato, Rodrigo Briscoletti offered Nera's hand in marriage to a man who could retrieve rings from a volcano and a water cave.  Madason was silent, so I had no idea why he cared about being her suitor.  I don't think silent protagonists work for a game with a personal story like this.  Madason doesn't even pantomime like Mario in Super Mario RPG!

At first, I leveled near Abovitall Tower, and once I got the mid-level wind spell Swoosh, I fought the enemies in the tunnel near Mostroferrato.  Even then, Madason sometimes died instantly to attacks that "paralyzed" him.  And this is a game where solo characters don't level up faster. banghead  I may have to play another game alongside this to prevent burnout.

Dragon Quest 5 Human Only:  Grinding and Gambling

To even have a chance at defeating the 3 Magmen at the end of Mt. Magmageddon, Madason had to power level to 22 to learn Fullheal.  This was no easy task considering my hero was slow compared to the enemies.  Rockbombs could explode, Wormbats could paralyze him instantly with an unlucky roll, and Phantaseyes elephants did him in with nothing but melee.  It took thousands of experience per level.  Each fight only gave a few hundred unless Madason was lucky enough to kill a Metal Slime.   cry

Good thing I didn't try to keep a formal Death Count for this game, cause if I did, it would probably have surpassed my entire solo Edgar playthrough of Final Fantasy 6 by now.   rolleye

After I got to 22, I tried fighting the Magmen with a Cautery Sword equipped.  There was a moment of false hope when Madason managed to kill 2 of them, but then his MP ran out and the third one kept using its strongest attack repeatedly.  It was time to resort to save scumming at the casino.

The casino in Fortuna offered the Metal King Sword as a prize. . .for 50,000 tokens.  I started gambling on the slots with about 300.  After a few hours over a period of two days, I got enough for the sword and probably another item to spare.

With the Metal King Sword, Madason's Attack jumped from 132 to 217.  I ran from all the battles in the Mostroferrato area and Mt. Magmageddon to preserve my MP.

The Magmen could perform 1 of 3 actions per turn.  If I was lucky, they'd "assess the situation" and do nothing.  The second option was to melee attack for around 20 damage.  The worst possibility was breathing fire and taking 50 HP from Madason.  Madason for once was faster than his enemies, and was guaranteed to Fullheal before the Magmen could attack.

With each slash, Madason dealt around 80-100 damage.  Each Magman had 450 HP.  Madason survived with 75 HP, and claimed. the Circle of Fire.  Now he could marry a woman he barely knew and had expressed no interest in whatsoever.  (This quest arc makes no sense with a silent protagonist!  At least the one nameless gold-digger suitor has a motive to marry Nera, if not a morally good one.  And Crispin the spoony bard actually does love her.)

Rodrigo Briscoletti lent Madason one of his boat so he could finally find a second party member!  If only Bianca were available for Mt. Magmageddon, this would be a more fun variant.  The worst part of the game is finally over!   dancing

Dragon Quest 5 Solo Human:  Was the Dungeon Order Swapped During Development?

Madason sailed north and found Bianca in the town of Stockenbarrel.  She opened the canal lock for him and joined the party to help him marry Nera.  I don't know if Mt. Magmageddon and the Cataract Caves were switched at some point, but the latter was much easier than the former.  There was no boss behind the waterfall, and the random encounters were almost the same as those in the outskirts of Mostroferrato.

With the Metal King Sword, Madason could kill each enemy with one hit.  Bianca occasionally cast Sizzle to deal some fire damage to groups of monsters, but was otherwise almost irrelevant.

The main question now is "Who will Madason marry"?  There are 3 choices:  Bianca, Nera, and the DS exclusive Debora.

Bianca makes the most sense from a story perspective, because she knew Madason during the childhood arc and explored the Uptaten Towers dungeon with him.  She seems to be the most "balanced" of the three brides in combat, and can learn the fire spells Kafrizzle (i.e. Blazemost) and Kasizzle (i.e. Firebolt).  I'm not sure what her written accent is supposed to be.  I'm guessing Steve Irwin Australian because she says "Crikey!" at one point.

Nera is the Black Mage, and the current plot arc revolves around her father's engagement test.  You don't get to see much of her character unless you marry her.  She can learn Kaboom (i.e. Explodet), as well as Bianca's fire spells.  Nera can cast Midheal too, but that's only useful outside of combat by this point.

Debora's personality is similar to Katherine's from Taming of the Shrew.  Supposedly she has the funniest lines in party chat.  She's the physical fighter, and gets several unique weapons.  This also means she has the smallest selection of spells, but then again all 3 brides get Oomph (i.e. Bikill) and Kasap (i.e. Decrease), which are all I really need.  Attack magic tends to be disappointing in Dragon Quest, and I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up weak in DQ 5 as well.

Madason's wife only affects the hair color of the children, not their stats or abilities.  This isn't Fire Emblem Awakening!   lol

Chances are I'll go with Debora for her combat effectiveness and humorous dialogue.  It doesn't make much sense from a story perspective, but then again RPG plots are silly anyway.

Dragon Quest 5 Human Only:  Team Debora

Madason married Debora, and she gave some entertaining party chat throughout the adventure.  One nice moment was when she told the priest at the wedding to speed things up.  Once you talk to her for a while, it seems that the "Taming of the Shrew" personality is an act, and that she really does love the hero.  The Wedding Veil offered more protection than her default Silver Tiara, so I had her switch headgear.

Debora started at level 10, and I had little patience for grinding after the Mount Magmageddon fiasco.  She managed to catch up fairly quickly due to the level curve.  Debora could kill enemies with the unique Akillics weapon, which hit twice like the various "Falcon" blades in other DQ games.  In Helmunaptra, the queen told Madason to head to Gotha, where a "King Pancraz" used to live.  I died a couple of times to urn mimics and palette-swapped elephants.  Ivory poachers would probably be considered the true heroes in Dragon Quest 5's world.   rolleye

Since Pancraz didn't seem to be a common name in this world, Madason knew it had to be his dad.  When the party entered Mount Batten, Rodrigo Briscoletti's servant gave them a treasure chest.  This contained the Flowing Dress, an armor upgrade for Debora said to "deflect magic, ice, and fire".  If only Madason were in drag in Mount Magmageddon, that would have saved me a lot of trouble!  I accidentally cast Evac once because it was next to Fullheal, and the menus in this game seemed more sluggish than other RPGs.  A creepy innkeeper gave Madason a +5 Strength boost instead of killing him like Debora thought would happen.

Debora was now immune to the Wight Princes' lightning spells.  Minidemons could temporarily make the AI control Debora with "tactics", which was annoying.  The worst enemies were the Quack Ups that were fast and could put my characters to sleep.  After navigating this maze cave, Madason and Debora entered Gotha.

Debora had fainted several times, and it turned out she was pregnant.  This meant leaving the party, and Madason went through Riteof Passage solo.  There should be a commandment for RPGs saying "Thou Shalt Not Have Random Encounters in Puzzle Dungeons".  Those battles were awful for solos, and I had to flee often.  Hula Ghouls could drain MP, Gasbags could inflict a more powerful poison ailment, and Hex Hellmets could Curse Madason, forcing him to go back to a priest to find a cure.

The boss fight was Robbin Hood and his much weaker partner Hippoblockamus.  The latter spent most of his time blocking or dealing minor damage with melee.  Robbin Hood could hit for around 75 damage before I cast Buff twice to mitigate it.  The fight was going well until Robbin Hood got a critical hit that sent Madason back to Gotha.  Madason got a revenge critical in Round 2 that made up for it.  Robbin Hood occasionally cast Midheal, but that couldn't keep up with Metal King Sword damage.  That weapon was necessary to survive without any monster helpers!

Gotha's chancellor was of course evil.  I'm trying to think of games with good advisers/viziers/chancellors, and all I can think of right now are Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy 6.  Chrono Trigger too if you're referring to the real 1000 AD Guardia chancellor locked in the treasure chest.  Debora had been kidnapped, and Madason was ready to rescue her after dealing with annoying event flags.  (DQ 5 still has better event flags than Earthbound, where I had to revive Paula specifically so she could be kidnapped in the Fourside mall.)

Dragon Quest 5 Human Only:  Does This Even Qualify as a Variant Now?

Gotha's chancellor had betrayed the kingdom and allied with monsters, so Madason had to chase after him to rescue Debora.  A pair of magic shoes warped him to the region near the next dungeon, Knightmare Towers.

It was another puzzle dungeon of sorts, and I had to cross between the two towers multiple times by falling down holes and pulling switches.  To get past the fires, I ran through and cast Fullheal at the end instead of pushing the rocks.   rolleye

Several Mimics almost killed Madason with Thwack, but he was lucky enough to dodge instant kill spells.  There were three bosses at the top of the dungeon.

The Orc Pawn was a stronger version of the physical orc enemies throughout the game.  Two Buff casts followed by Metal King Sword slashes and the occasional Fullheal killed it without too much trouble.

The Chimaera Pawn was more interesting.  It could attack up to two times per turn.  Two Buffs ensured the physical blows wouldn't hurt too much.  However, it spent much of its time breathing fire like the Magmen, or casting Crackle and Sizzle.  I cast Absorb Magic just to experiment with it, and it was surprisingly helpful.  Absorb Magic didn't reduce Crackle and Sizzle's damage, but it gave me MP every time the boss cast those.  It was a sustainable source of MP for Fullheal!

Kon the Knight was the final boss for the 2nd generation, and he could hit hard.  Kon could breathe ice, use physical attacks, and cast Frizzle and Kaswoosh.  All but the physical attack were threatening to Madason.  Fortunately, Madason was faster at level 24, and could Fullheal reliably.  Debora talked during a brief cutscene and removed Kon's barrier for me.

After the fight, Bishop Ladja appeared and petrified Madason and Debora.  Statue Madason was sold at auction to a rich guy as a good luck charm.  A long series of cutscenes appeared showing how 8 years had passed since generation 2.  Sancho showed up along with Madason's children Parry and Madchen to turn him back to normal.  Now I have a full party of 4 to finish the game!  I guess this variant is only a minor difference from a monster playthrough for the final hours.  (DQ 5 is surprisingly short relative to the other games.)

Dragon Quest 5 Human Only:  Who Programmed the Random Encounter Rate?

The third generation so far has been mostly story, and a few dungeons without bosses.  So this update might be shorter than normal.

Bjorn the Behemoose stomped towards Mostroferrato after being released from a magical seal, and my party challenged him at the top of the nearby tower.  Madason and company were in no shape to do so.  Parry and Madchen were at such low levels, they couldn't do anything!

It was time to grind again.  I did that on the continent in the center of the world "ring".  Parry and Madchen at least had the decency to level up quickly.  Gradually, Parry became similar to the DQ 4 and DQ 8 heroes, with a balance of healing spells, attack magic, and good melee.  Madchen remained weak until level 16, when she learned Oomph.  Combined with her high speed, this allowed her to buff Parry and Madason's slashes.  Sancho remained slow and weak.  The only reason to carry him along was to take hits for the other party members and occasionally cast Kabuff.

Madason and friends had to sail through a watery cave to get to Lofty Peak, where his mother used to live.  This meant dealing with an unusually high random encounter rate.  The monsters there often used powerful ice attacks on the whole party, and MP attrition made the cave annoying.

Lofty Peak gave me a special key and a magic carpet to fly around the world map.  The next destination was the tower leading to Zenithia.  Turns out Zenithia fell into a lake, and the tower was in ruins.  I did manage to find the Diamond Akillics, one of Debora's unique weapons.  Too bad I couldn't find her again until later!  For all the debates that fans have about which wife to pick, she's absent for most of the game.

To get to Zenithia, I had to go through Diggery Pokery, which was yet another puzzle dungeon.  This time, the gimmick involved mine carts and switches.  The encounters here weren't too bad.  I could do nothing in Zenithia until I got a golden orb.  That meant going to Faerie Lea and asking the fairies to make a new one.  After a short trip through a forest southeast of Mostroferrato, Parry led the party through.  (I guess only kids can see fairies?)

The armor shop sold the Flowing Dress, i.e. the same armor Debora wore in the 2nd generation after her father gave me a treasure chest containing it.  If you want an easier time, you might as well pick Nera or Debora to get extra items you'll otherwise miss out on.
