I like BEAT a lot, as in "You can't beat that with a stick".
If BAT weren't already crossed off, that would be my second guess.
You can also stick a THUMB in someone's eye, or stick out your thumb for hitchhiking.
A CONDUCTOR uses a stick to wave in the air, but it's called a baton I think.
You can put a stick into the spokes of a biCYCLE to stop it abruptly.
You can use a dowsing rod to look for WATER.

I think I agree with ANGEL as a third guess in the event we get these two right.

After checking Mardoc's spoiler: I didn't think of CARROT sticks, but that's now my #2 choice.

CARROT and the stick jumps out at me immediately.
A CONDUCTOR holds a kind of stick
I guess BEAT stick is a phrase? Not too confident in this one.

Now for the Fiend clue. I think it's either ANGEL or IRON, leaning towards Iron here as having the stronger association.

My preference would be CARROT -> CONDUCTOR -> IRON.

I still like BEAT for the second guess. Another American slang phrase: "Whoo-eee! He looks like he was beaten with the ugly stick!"
The conductor's baton may look like a stick, but it's not the right usage of the word.

I don't think I'm going to stick with spoiler tags, we've all had a chance to check our first reactions uncontaminated.

BEAT was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the clue, which makes it seem like a good guess.

On the other hand...if you were trying to clue CARROT and CONDUCTOR, I have no ideas on an alternative clue.  It's true that it's officially a baton, but if I were trying to explain it to someone who didn't know the word I'd definitely call it 'the little stick that they wave'.  BEAT and CARROT...well, ok, that's not a particularly natural pairing either. Maybe that approach doesn't help much.

On a different note: if we believe CONDUCTOR, then I'm strongly against IRON.  Those would be a cinch to clue together, and Commodore didn't, which means they're probably not both blue.

On balance I think I would go with CONDUCTOR next; if it works then ANGEL, if it doesn't then debate ANGEL/IRON.  But I'm feeling very wishy-washy about it and wouldn't be opposed to trying BEAT instead. I feel like BEAT is slightly more likely to be correct but CONDUCTOR tells us more about our Fiend clue.

I also prefer Conductor to Beat. Row is my third choice I guess, but I was reading the clue much more as a noun than a verb...

I guess that's two and a half for Conductor, one and a half for Beat. Here goes... Point to Conductor

Phew!  So that probably leaves us with just the Fiend second word.

DaveV and I like ANGEL next, Fenn prefers IRON, sunrise hasn't expressed an opinion that I see...I think I'm going to wait for Sunrise to weigh in rather than point right now.
