[SPOILERS - NO PLAYERS] The Final Clusterfuck: The PB38 Map and Lurker Thread

Oh well, this was quite disappointing.

Point 1:

I can completely understand the human perspective and that turns are getting heavier and less interesting for some players. However, I’m not sure this is a really good excuse as if I remember correctly, most people joined this game exactly with the anticipation of having a big and epic game. What did you expect?

With regards to turn pace I think it’s completely fine that turns take 48h or even more in the later stages of the game. Makes managing RL possible. However, the fact that some players just disappeared for longer periods without warning is simply bad behavior towards others.
Of course, I’m a bit of a hypocrite here as I have myself had times during this game when I have contributed less and have OH as a super-reliable turn-player by my side.

Point 2:

Regards to calling games this early I have stated my opinion multiple times here at RB throughout the years: Games are generally called way too early here. In my opinion civ is a game where if you keep making moves and do not just press enter, you will keep giving yourself opportunities to improve your position. Especially as we are not playing a 1v1 here: It’s really hard to anticipate what is going to happen in these games.

With regards to PB38, I think it’s quite likely that we missed a culture win attempt by xenu and potentially by other players. We surely missed on bunch of interesting military conflicts. Mack would have likely been dogpiled at least by us and TBS had he gone for a win condition. And who knows what else could have happened. We are not going to get legendary darrell-finishes, comebacks or whatever, if we stop the games 100 turns before the win condition, and that’s a pity.

Regarding our team, we had to deal with a dogpile in the early game and have now spent the last 110 turns trying to crawl back into the game and relevancy. Our Astro cities are not really online yet and it’s too early to say if our war with GJ will help us forward or not. Overall it feels like we (hats off to OH & Hitru) spent a huge amount of time during the past ~10 months and now we don’t get to see how far we could have got. And that’s pretty shitty.

Final words

To leave on a more positive note: This was a great map, many many thanks for the effort to everyone involved. Thank you lurkers, it will surely be interesting to go through this thread. And thank you for the other players, it was fun while it lasted.

Should we be making agreements that games aren't called before an arbitrary limit, such as some many players in the industrial or modern eras?

How would you enforce that? Real Life happens, turn pace suffers.

The only meaningful thing that I think can be done is ultimately to reduce the sheer complexity and time required to play turns, which in the end goes back to map size.

Also, maybe a bit of player screening for the next pitboss(es)?  I can see two different types: you've got people who really insist on a turn/day and start to lose interest if they don't get it, and you've got people who can't guarantee being a metronome but will reliably play the next turn reasonably soon.  Would call the second group 'casual' except that it includes people who can win these things.

Both groups can play a pitboss to completion, unless they start mixing...

Cause of death here ultimately was, I think, TBS (not trying to name and shame here) didn't have the time to dedicate to an uphill battle. In this kind of situation, a temporary sub could probably manage the job if the scale and scope wasn't so vast. I can cover 30 cities and discern what's happening well enough on the map with some direction from a turn player. But 50+ (I don't know the exact city counts but this has to be a conservative floor) strewn across 4-6 continents spanning maybe 100 tiles in any direction where enemies need to be accounted for potentially hitting out of the fog? Nope. Cut that in half and it is feasible. So, map size.

But you aren't wrong about the "I'll get it when I can" vs. the "I want it everyday" folks. I fall firmly into the latter group, except when I'm the one who has something come up. So I try to relax a little with some empathy until it becomes regular, habitual, and/or with poor or no communication. I think we had a trifecta here towards the end and it wasn't just one player.

Again, not trying to be critical of the players, just trying to diagnose the patient a bit so that next time we can get to the end and have a real conclusion.

I am a little sad to miss using amphibious praetorians. Those were going to be ugly even with muskets defending.

IT WOULD HAVE DEPENDED ON A NUMBER OF FACTORS AND STRATEGIC CONSIDERATIONS.

If Pinwyn looked hostile, their ports would have burned. More ports mean more frigates.

I was defaulting towards taking my ocean's continents, but I knew that I didn't want to just hand it over to you. If TBS had been able to make gains against you I'd try to burn your ports/take your northern continents. I'd hate to throw the game.
