Without DotF or walls or both, Grotsnot is in massive trouble soon.

He won't get DotF as it's banned in this game. Walls are iffy, at best. I think the only thing going for him right now is that Alhazard doesn't appear to be thinking "invade Japan". The only thing that would slow down Alhambram is if TBS parks some military on his borders a few turns before the DoF ends.
Sending units to their death since 2017.
Don't do what I did: PBEM 3 - Arabia , PBEM 6 - Australia This worked well enough: PBEM 10 - Aztecs Gamus Interruptus: PBEM 14 - Indonesia Gathering Storm Meanderings: PBEM 15 - Gorgo You Say Pítati, I Say Potato: PBEM 17 - Nubia The Last of the Summer Wine: PBEM 18 - Eleanor/England Rhymin' Simon: PBEM 20 - Indonesia (Team w/ China) (October 22nd, 2018, 11:56)suboptimal Wrote: He won't get DotF as it's banned in this game. Hmm, building a Holy Site is just not in the cards imo then. Russia shows how to defend against Rome, Encampment, preparation. He just signed Japans death warrant.
May be the mapmaker speaking but I am following this one more intensly.
So, actually Japan is rather defensible. A first line of defense with even warriors and archers is possible to do, maybe with switching out a warrior all the time. And I think BW is the wrong way. He needs to do chariots or horseman ASAP. And stop that Holy Site.
I think holy sites period was the greatest mistake for Japan. With Russia in the game there's no way to be the first religion, and nobody else should be rushing the 2nd. The return on investment even of religion (even with half priced HS) is just too small to be worth spending all that early in any game, much less with Rome and Greece in the game. On any random Pangaea with Rome in the game there's probably a 50% chance that Rome is going to start close enough to rush you. Therefore safety needs to be a concern even from T0. To that end, starting off down the BW line to unlock Encampments and locate iron should be a priority. Are encampments without walls even worth it? And walls are really expensive this early although a +100% boosted Japanese-Encampment chop would do the trick. Alternatively as you say if horses are available then a rush to HBR is fine although that does require unlocking Maneuver early as well.
tl;dr when playing a slower blooming civ adjacent to an early rusher, make the border spiky first then focus on leveraging long-term growth. I think it's quite possible, just not executed yet. TBS did an excellent job here deflecting Rome's greedy eyes elsewhere so I guess that counts.
Can Legion chop? Or am I misunderstanding Alhambram’s latest post. It appears he has a legion on a forest intending to use it to chop out the ram. I think the legion charge can only be used to build a fort (and I think also repair pillaged improvements).

The Legion's fort ability is coded as a builder function so they can chop and they can repair. They essentially have 1 builder charge but can't build improvements, other than the fort. |
