Our opponents:
OT4E: I dunno. He took over for Gavagai in 38 as we started to steamroll him. I don't really have much experience with him beyond that. Mr. Cairo: I dunno him either. Superjm: I have a vague impression of noob from long ago. Maybe he is better than I remember. Gavagai: I remember him being solid before my hiatus. We killed him in PB38, but honestly we got a bit lucky (dogpile was part of the hope, but it wasn't actually in our control). Donovan Zoi: Dunno? From what I've seen, he hasn't been a huge threat. Elkad: Not particularly threatening? Dunno much. Old Harry, et al: Basically a pack of wolves over here. Krill: What did MS say: "A cackling mad pig scientist? Sounds frightening." Superdeath: Probably going to superdie. Lewwyn and MS: Dunno. I haven't played a full game in 5 years and MS is a noob. I'm sure we'll do fine. You want to add anything MS? Fill in any blanks for me?

Sorry, I don’t know much more about our opponents than you. I have read some reports by some of them, but I have only actually played with or against Mr. Cairo, OT4E, Elkad, and Superdeath.
I guess I would classify our opponents like this: Dangerous, this group probably contains winner: the Hairy Horde, Krill, Gavagai. Dangerous, but not as good: Superdeath, OT4E. Average/not sure: Mr. Cairo, Donavon Zoi, Elkad. Probably not that good: Superjm. (to other players months from now: sorry for probably characterizing you badly) OT4E seems very inclined to try opportunistic, limited aggression. For example, burning a lightly defended frontier city or capturing workers on the border. Superdeath is an early game maniac and if we start next to him, we need to be careful. He seems to mellow a little bit as the game stretches on, though. Once we start to find our neighbors, I think it might be a good idea to look back on some older reports to try to get a read on them.
Participated in: Pitboss 40 (lurked by Mr. Cairo), Pitboss 45 (lurked by Charriu and chumchu), Pitboss 63 (replaced Mr. Cairo), Pitboss 66, Pitboss 69, Pitboss 74
Participating in: Pitboss 78 (lurked by GT), Pitboss 79 (lurking giraflorens) Criticism welcome!
Are we aggro or not?
Considering FIN, and making a straight run for colossus. Maybe pair with ORG and Vikings for trading posts, zerkers, and just go naval Considering a silly CHM and colosseum play with keshiks Considering PHI and one of CRE/FIN for early libraries and early academy I think FIN could be better now that it gets +35% to libraries and this is a watery map.

Okay, these are my quick, rushing-out-the-door-in-the-morning thoughts typed in ten minutes, but the snake pick is already moving, so here goes:
I think new Ind could be a lot of fun to try, and so far, it looks like people aren’t as inclined to take it as I thought they would be. Therefore, it might not have all the problems I thought it might have due to popularity. Besides, this is a test game, right? FOR SCIENCE! More generally, I think that having at least one early game expansion accelerating trait is a good idea. Imp, Exp, etc. Our start needs Fishing and Hunting for food, so that’s what we need to keep in mind for picking civs. I haven’t done any sims, but I think that ignoring the crab for a while wouldn’t be too bad, so we probably only need one of Hunting or Mining to have a decently fast start. There’s a lot of good civs that have one or Hunting or Mining, so I favor leader first.

We might be able to tech Hunting before the first worker completes.

And I forgot to quote it, but OT4E is one of the more aggressive players on the site. Note that aggressiveness does not always work out favorably, but that is certainly his foremost trait as a player. |
