Post game analysis from the Codenames grandmaster, A. Nagram:
Quote:After the weak 1. Lifeboat, 3 ? by blue, red seized control with the brilliant 1. ... Party, 4 !! Very well played, Azoth and red team.
Two things: I thought this would be a much slower-paced game, and expected to have four or five rounds instead of three, so I expected to have time to sort out the gray words.
I've been on two cruises, and the first thing that happens after you board is a lifeboat DRILL. Although no one will say so, I'm sure the lifeboats are LOCKed. Otherwise, I can guarantee that passengers would be going in for private parties, souvenir hunting, or random button mashing. Also, in old times, wooden lifeboats were propelled by oars in oarLOCKs, and there's usually an airLOCK to enter the lifeboat in space opera. With all that self-justification out of the way, the merit of a clue must be determined by its success in the game, and by that standard this was a terrible clue. No one on either team ever mentioned LOCK as a possibility. Sorry, team, but I don't see how I could have cleaned up this mess in three rounds.
Loved the grandmaster analysis! Well done, Red team.
I agree that it was a tough board for Blue. I wasn't excited about my chances, either - until I saw Party. One big clue can make all the difference. I thought about delaying it, hoping Blue team would point to CRASH, but decided against. Party was too good a clue, Red team would definitely guess CRASH before other options, they may need time to see CONTRACT (opting for CHEESE or something instead), and T-hawk was doing work steering Blue team away from it. Besides, there were plenty of other maritime words to get through. After that, the clue order was set. Aegean came last, after the potentially conflicting words (WATER, FISH, BOARD) had been cleared away. Yeah, can't see either how you could have won that board, let alone in three rounds. Seems that basically any connection you could make had a better grey word fit. Only thing you probably should have done differently is the "unlimited" second clue. The way I read it, your team said: "Here are how three guesses. If they're correct, clue unlimited so that we can get them quickly out of the way." Well, they were not correct... That said, wouldn't have changed a damn thing imo, with such a tough board. Well played Red team. That was a merciful swift kill !
Lifeboat was a good shot at linking Drill + Lock + Sink in the abstract... but yeah you can't give that with Water, Board, and Bay also up there. But also yeah, sometimes you can't do anything against the other team playing perfectly, I've been on the winning side of that before.
I believe WarriorKnight wanted to spymaster round 2 for blue; I'll volunteer for round 3. There's enough luck in the word randomization that there are some boards that require a mistake from the opponents for you to have a chance. The hard part is convincing yourself to be slow and steady and count on a mistake that may not actually happen. Quote:I believe WarriorKnight wanted to spymaster round 2 for blue; I'll volunteer for round 3.Fine by me! As an FYI, I'll be attending PAX Unplugged this weekend, tomorrow through Sunday. I'll try to check in by phone, but if I'm too distracted to remember, feel free to point without waiting for me.

Bad luck Dave, that looks like a tough board to get through without a mistake from red.
Confirming that I can take the next round as spymaster. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
