Epic One - How a RB N00b lost - Space's report

I hope this is a 'placeholder' for a longer report but I can't promiss anything as Christmas draws near suddenly responsibilities are piling up and my to-do list has an invisble last line somewhere in the distance.

Anyway.

I lost! cry

How come? Errr, bottom line: too few military units, too rapid expansion, not enough experience with the new diplo mechanics.

I traded with India to keep up in tech, but they were destroyed at some point. Since I refused to stop trading with them I had alienated the other AI.

The Honourable French lived upto 1854AD when they finally succumbed to the hostilities by the combined efforts of Montezuma and the Mongolian Hordes.

Defeats are some of the most interesting results, in my view. Reporting the details of your game can help others, but it can also help you to improve, because it leads you to examine your moves and choices in a way that will contrast and compare with what others chose to do. It ripens the field to pick up on the little things that help build performance over time.

Plus, let's be honest. A steamroll win is boring to read! "I kicked butt, kicked some more, and more. More and more and more." *yawn* lol Much more fun is, "They came at me in waves and waves! eek We managed to hold them off over here, for six turns, but the other force over there swept our forces from the field of battle and burned down three of our cities! We tried to regroup at..." Etc etc.

Finally, something always good to keep in mind when facing adversity: the hard things are the sweetest! If it were too easy, it wouldn't be worth chasing! (It's hard to believe that Kylearan lost most of his early Civ3 Epics games! He is one of the more dominating players around, these days!)

Good luck with your holiday pressures. If you find the time to report more, great. If not, that's OK too. As long as you had fun playing!

Hey I lost my first Civ 3 epic, so I know how painful it can be. Congratulations on posting though. I know my most memorable game of Civ 3 was a defeat (time defeat at that! - Epic 5 I think)

Indeed, one of the mistakes I made was playing too fast. In my defense I can say that it was one of my first games, and it's like being a kid in a candy store. "I wonder what that's gonna taste like... I want one of those... I want 10 of those... etc"

I know that's why I'm hoping to find some time somewhere to make a report less cheesy than this one.

True, I've been playing CivIII on Warlord much too long. It was the CFC tournament that got my play to a higher level and especially the SGs I played with the gang I met there (MadBax, TedJackson, Karasu, etc). To my own surprise I'm in the top of the CivIII HoF QuarterMasters now. nod
I'm afraid that I'll need that same longish route for cIV now again. But that is no problem at all. It's great to be playing with so many other players and having so much fun in the process. I'd even gather one'd lose interest quicker if it's all too easy.

I can't say I enjoyed losing my cities too much, but having decided to tough it out to the biitter end, I am impressed with the AI to push through and really finish it, I had feared I would have to end the game playing endless turns as a OCC and suffer a 'time' loss.

Good job on fighting it out -- that's always rough.

I had the same trouble with diplo. All the nasties in our backyard, and the nice guys halfway around the world! smile Evil, that. :D

Yeah, you'd almost think it was deliberate... (hmm, searching for the mischief icon.. not there, eh? This one 'll do: :hat: )

I know that all I could do was laugh when the first two AIs to show up were Genghis and Monty. I knew I was going to have trouble right then. tongue

God I wish I could have completed this on time. But the game just takes too long to play when you're back at war with somebody or other every fifty turns. Too long for me, anyway.

That's a shame indeed, I would have love to read how you've done. What date is your game at?

1700-something. I'm doing well holding my own against the nasties (just relieved Monty of two of his cities), but Washington has a humongous tech lead, and I have no idea if I can catch him.

Not a full blown report yet, I'm afraid but a little tidbit that I don't want to keep from you. I had a good producing city, Oleans, stolen from me by Monty, we we're sharing a religion and wasn't counting on his attack.

See, it had the Pyramids and stuff too.. cry

Anyway the funny thing is, that I had Beshbalik as a reward after the Mongols had chosen unwisely and I kept trying to reclaim Orlean by culture, by stuffing Beshbalik with culture boms. I didn't know at the time that dispite the many French revolts, Orleans would *never-ever* flip back to me... and only made Monty more furious by contending for more of 'his' tiles.

I guess that's one lesson that'll stick. thumbsup lol
