Turn 57

Barb warrior declined to attack. No point attacking it on a hill, wait for it to come down to flat land. Chariot from capital moved onto city 5 sign, so can cover the worker stack if yet another barb turns up. Delayed whip of the chariot from city 4 to get another cottage turn in, the chariot isn't needed ASAP so the turn delay is absolutely fine there. The warrior in queue will queue upgrade to a spear. Chariot being built in city 2 because I don't quite trust OH, nor the barbs to actually lose battles they should do.

Saving gold until eoT58. Researching Masonry in 4 turns, due eot62 (same turn city 5 granary completes) so then city 5 goes onto the GW. We will have enough gold saved to then get either Writing or Sailing in 5 turns, dependent on aims. Writing only makes sense if we can fit the library into city 4, but I'm not sure we can without the chops, so Sailing afterwards is most likely.

I'm still livid about the RNG this game. I've lost 3 warriors, one of which was a 50/50 and I'm ok with, but every other battle has been a 90% battle. I've lost 2 and in the other 2 both warriors have come to within one round of dying. Even the chariot just like at 3 rounds and now I'm likely to lose the capital horse pasture.

You can't win games when you keep on losing 90% battles, and you can't not take those battles wh n they are against barbs.

Yeah, nothing to add really. It sucks, and you're right to be upset about it. You don't have a big number of units to compensate for bad RNG early on which makes it all the more annoying.

I got fucked over in my first barbarian battle in PB41, at slightly better odds, but still. And it caused a big ripple effect in terms of exploration and city placement.

Turn 59

Vengeance

The capital warrior killed the 1.5 health barb warrior after it promoted to C2. This allowed the chariot from city 4 to sit in the city and ensure city 4 doesn't get razed to another 90% odds loss. The chariot moved but uncovered nothing, so the workers are roading towards the furs now.

Fuck this barb. I want to send this chariot south, but I don't know if we can, because we then have no cover from the east.

Turn 60

Barb warrior doesn't want to attack. I expect it to move to the cottage and then the chariot has 99% odds on attack. As I've not hooked copper just yet, we have a few more turns to get warriors out, to replenish what we've lost. I've ended turn, but I'm still considering changing the capital to a 1 turn warrior then completing a chariot on growth to size 5 before building a settler. We only have a warrior and 1 chariot to cover city 5 and north, until the chariot completes eot62 from city 2. The capital can complete a chariot eot62 or a warrior eot60. I think the chariot is actually more useful.

I'll try to write more later, but for reference for micro. Have to give up the pig T62 and can't get it back until T70? Something like that. So it can reach 21/28 food eot61, happy cap of 4 until T68 when furs are hooked then happy cap of 6 T69 when the slave unhappy wears off.

We are down 5 to 6 pop on OH, over 5 cities.

Looking at the worker micro, and to remind myself after focusing on RL shit, furs are hooked T67. That means each city can grow into unhappiness eot66, furs are camped T67 and the unhappy pop goes away.

The capital grows eot60 to size 4, so realistically, it will grow eot63 into that unhappiness and then spend 3 turns with the unhappy citizen. So the choice to me is to suck up the lost 6 food, and slow grow to size 5 (without the pig, making 2fpt), or to build a worker/settler. I'm not sure we are going to be able to afford the 8th city unless it is off shore, and even then I think it is at best breakeven investment. Unless it picks up a happy resource, I don't really see where we can settle for a good commerce city either. But every other city somewhat sucks at building another settler compared to the capital so let's just go with it.

The chariot completes eot62, so there is one turn of growth needed to reach size 5. That can probably just get dumped into a warrior and let it queue upgrade to a spear. Then working two cottages, sheep and horse the capital makes 11fhpt into a settler. So 5 turns to reach a double whip, settler T64-68. But then we have happy cap space that is available. Probably better to just stop the settler, grow to size 6 by taking the pig back, compromise City 5 slightly but it can focus on working hammer tiles whilst building the GW. In that case, can grow to size 6 eot68, so T69 works sheep, horse, 3 cottages and a mine (unless I can get a 4th cottage down). Then carry on building the worker at either 11 or 13fhpt, ideally the former with one turn at 13fhpt so settler due eot74. That would allow the settler to reach city 7 by T77. So if we chopped a galley around T70, we would be able to explore the island and figure out if we wanted to settle there.

I think this is showing we need more workers. Probably build one in city 3 after it grows to size 4, or whip it at size 3 after the chariot. That would be due eot64 via a whip or eot66 without. The whip is probably better, it would regrow eot66 and never be in unhappiness.

City 3 doesn't really have anything to build either. Even if it was to whip something it has to regrow to size 3, and it puts out 16 hammers in those 4 turns. Overflowing 11 hammers anyway, choice is almost half a granary, half a barracks or most of a chariot. I'm tempted to just go with the granary, and then at size 3 just time the whip for the food box, regrow to size 4 and we might be ready to actually build something else.

City 4 is set in stone: we want that library, so it's just prep work to get there. I think stacking whip anger, one chop and working the plains forest hill and get the granary, then prep for the library whip. I think it's more efficient due to worker placement, and otherwise the city has to put 1hpt into something we won't finish. Writing is being pushed back if we go for Sailing (we can get either Sailing or Writing before we have to save gold, if we go Sailing the extra turns of the granary pay off, if we go Writing it doesn't). And I think we have to go Sailing.

City 5 is straight forward. Finish granary eot62, start GW, grow, finish GW, see where we are.

Gav is in a turn split. We'll figure out with whom later, but for now, turn a day pace is best we can aim for.

Spoiler prior to turn report: Someone, and I think it was Elkad, just built a T60 Great Wall.

I don't think I've ever seen it that early. We have no reason to carry on researching Masonry though, so I'm stopping that and saving gold yet again.
