I haven't been able to find as much information online as I'd like, but we may need to use a custom map that specifically pairs players 1 & 4.

Found a pretty cool map, if we want to try this one out instead? Easy player 1/2 teamed, player 3/4 teamed.. 8G7FCE

I'm slightly confused. I've joined both, picking only a placeholder leader on the older of the two. Which are we going with (or is one 2v2 and one FFA), and for the teamer, it seems like there isn't a way to team it how we want?

FWIW, I could reach out to the devs and see if there's a way they could look into supporting this in some way - whether it's in custom teaming settings or custom turn order.

I asked about it on Steam:

Based on the sole response, it sounds like whoever creates the game has the ability to assign teams as part of the initial set-up.

No, the response says the map has to be set up that way; the players can't do anything about it (unless you re-created the map tongue ).

Okay, after way too much time spent digging through random 4P 2v2 maps, I found two where the default was set to Players 1 & 3 vs 2 & 4, which isn't ideal but at least better than Team 1 having an obvious advantage.

Thoughts?

I think they both look kind of cool.

Wouldn't teams 1&4 Vs 2&3 balance better? Or are there none of those maps?

I'd be up for a game once I actually buy the game. Is it likely to go on sale any time soon or is it too new?

Yes; unfortunately, the way the game is structured currently the only way you can play something other than 1 & 2 vs. 3 & 4 is if the mapmaker set an alternative scheme as the default setting. There's hundreds of 4 player maps out there; as you might imagine, most are not balanced for 2 v 2 matches and/or are terrible, and I reckon that majority of the rest don't employ the optimal player order. Granted, I didn't look through anywhere near most of the maps, because it's a very tedious process to search through them, download one which looks vaguely reasonable from the blurry minimap image, and then load it up in SP to see what the default 2v2 team/player combo is.
